WHAT'S NEW AT NYBC o u r c o m m u n i t y b l o o d s u p p l y New York Blood Center (NYBC) will partner with American Red Cross Blood Services New York-Penn Region and New Jersey Workplace Blood Donor Coalition to launch the Super Community Blood Drive, a campaign designed to motivate New York and New Jersey residents to donate blood. The Super Community Blood Drive represents a unique collaboration between two states to increase the blood supply and is expected to include thousands of drives in the run-up to Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium. The campaign launches on the cusp of the summer months when donations tend to decrease because schools and businesses are less likely to hold blood drives. By combining the excitement of the Super Bowl with community blood drives, the campaign has the potential to dramatically increase donations in the Greater New York and New Jersey area. m e d i c a l p r o g r a m s a n d s e r v i c e s NYBC Medical Programs and Services opened a new collection site for clinical apheresis to help meet the medical service needs of our largest New Jersey partner hospital. New software systems are also being developed for Hemophilia Services, Cellular Therapies, and Clinical Services, allowing us to replace manual processes and greatly improve service efficiency and innovation. n a t i o n a l c o r d b l o o d p r o g r a m Since its founding, the National Cord Blood Program (NCBP) of the Howard P. Milstein National Cord Blood Center has released 4,900 cord blood units for transplantation to approximately 4,500 patients, while our deep-frozen cord blood inventory is approaching 60,000 units. Our inventory remains the world s largest, and we are proud to be the home of the first FDA-licensed stem cell product. NCBP is celebrating its 20 th year of service to transplant centers and patients and is currently participating in a nationwide clinical trial detailing the potential adverse effects of stem cell transplants. l i n d s l e y f. k i m b a l l r e s e a r c h i n s t i t u t e Researchers at NYBC s Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI) received two large NIH grants to support lifesaving research efforts. LFKRI s Sara Lustigman and her collaborators were awarded a five-year, $5.6 million grant to develop a novel antigen-sparing adjuvant to be used to develop more effective vaccines. Antigen-sparing adjuvants require much less antigen per vaccine dose to produce an effective response, thus increasing the number of doses that can be manufactured with the same amount of antigen (especially critical for the development of effective vaccines against new influenza strains, HIV, HCV, SARS, West Nile, and the increased threat of bioterrorism). LFKRI s Asim Debnath was awarded a five-year, $3.5 million grant to design novel inhibitors against human immune deficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and bring the most potent inhibitors to pre-clinical testing as potential new HIV drug candidates. Debnath s lab pioneered the identification of small molecule inhibitors which bind to a specific site that is highly conserved among HIV-1 strains and critical for viral entry, making it vulnerable to inhibition by new drugs. The award will support our continued research in designing next-generation inhibitors as potential new HIV drugs. YBC

OUR COMMUNITY BLOOD SUPPLY AS ONE OF THE MOST PREEMINENT AND COMPREHENSIVE BLOOD CENTERS IN THE WORLD, NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER MEETS THE DAILY BLOOD PRODUCT AND SERVICE NEEDS OF PARTNER HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT GREATER NEW YORK AND BEYOND. NYBC is deeply committed to ensuring the safety and efficacy of our community blood supply, providing the highest quality transfusion products and services to the 20 million residents of the communities we serve. We continue to establish key relationships and partnerships to support our blood collection efforts. From donors to employees to corporate and community partners, our dedicated supporters recognize the power of communities in action, and their dedication saves lives. We achieve our lifesaving mission through the generosity of nearly 2,000 volunteer blood donors who donate each day at multiple donor centers in our service area. NYBC holds some 10,000 mobile blood drives each year, distributing over a million blood products to nearly 200 hospitals in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Hudson Valley, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Our innovative blood operations and manufacturing practices establish NYBC as a quality leader in blood banking and transfusion medicine. 4 nybc report to our communities

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn donate blood. WHATEVER THE WEATHER Though Mother Nature brought her share of turbulent weather events to the New York area, in the midst of the storm, NYBC worked diligently to meet the critical blood product and service needs of patients in our communities. From snowstorms to blizzards, to Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, we met the weather challenges head on with help from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. After Hurricane Sandy, emergency blood drives were scheduled throughout the city, and Mayor Bloomberg emphasized the importance of blood donation in two televised press briefings, encouraging fellow New Yorkers to roll up their sleeves. We anticipated some of the potential effects of Hurricane Sandy and delivered blood in advance to our 200 partner hospitals," said Rob Purvis, NYBC Vice President of Customer Service. "Our first priority remains getting them what they need for the care of patients.

MEDICAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES FOR 50 YEARS, MEDICAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES HAS BEEN A GLOBAL COMMUNITY HEALTH RESOURCE WITH A BROAD ARRAY OF MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS DEDICATED TO SERVING ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE POPULATIONS IN THE WORLD. We achieve outstanding patient and donor care through new product development, innovative clinical research, and top-notch customer service. Annually, our two hospital-based transfusion services provide some 40,000 blood products to patients, including liver, kidney, and heart transplant recipients. Our Clinical Services Program acts as a resource to hospitals, providing expertise in transfusion medicine and delivering over 8,500 specialized procedures each year. NYBC s Innovation Laboratory develops new blood products, blood processing methods, and pathogen inactivation technologies. We provide supportive therapy for patients with chronic transfusion requirements, like malignancies, thalasemmia, and sickle cell anemia. The NYBC Transfusion Medicine Education Program offers grand rounds, transfusion medicine fellowships, seminars, and audioconferences to NYBC staff, hospital partners, and a wide range of health care professionals worldwide. 6 nybc report to our communities

Good Morning America anchors George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, and Lara Spencer with Be The Match CEO Jeffrey Chell. NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM NYBC serves as the New York area registry for the National Marrow Donor Program. Since 1989, we have helped register some 250,000 potential bone marrow donors. Almost 10,000 bone marrow donors are added to the National Marrow Donor Program Be The Match Registry each year via more than 300 bone marrow drives. NYBC and the National Marrow Donor Program Be The Match Registry hosted a bone marrow drive at ABC News headquarters in New York City to encourage more people to join the registry and help the thousands of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, who successfully battled breast cancer, was diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) and received a lifesaving bone marrow transplant from her sister. Robin attended the drive along with co-anchors George Stephanoplous and Lara Spencer.

STEM CELLS FOR TRANSPLANTATION THE NATIONAL CORD BLOOD PROGRAM OF THE HOWARD P. MILSTEIN NATIONAL CORD BLOOD CENTER IS THE WORLD'S FIRST AND LARGEST PUBLIC CORD BLOOD BANK AND HAS BANKED MORE THAN 60,000 CORD BLOOD UNITS SINCE ITS FOUNDING. National Cord Blood Program (NCBP) continues to develop its outstanding reputation as a regional, national. and international cord blood and stem cell collection, processing, and storage operations leader. NCBP became the first public cord blood bank in the world to receive NetCord-FACT accreditation and the first licensure of a stem cell product-hemacord. We pioneered the use of umbilical cord blood as a source of hematopoietic stem cells for bone marrow restoration. NCBP houses 10% of the world s cord blood units, which have been distributed throughout the U.S. and internationally, with more than 4,900 units shipped to 220-plus transplant centers in 38 countries spanning six continents. Cord blood units have been used to treat some 84 disease diagnoses in patients of all ethnicities. We also contributed significantly to the creation of other public cord blood banks, with close to 100 worldwide. 8 nybc report to our communities

SECOND MILSTEIN SYMPOSIUM Leading experts from around the world gathered at NYBC s Murray Sargent Auditorium to share current perspectives in cord blood biology and clinical applications. The Symposium included presentations by distinguished speakers and thought leaders in the field as well as a guided tour of NCBP s state-of-the-art facility in Long Island City, New York. The event also honored NCBP Vice President and Program Director Pablo Rubinstein, MD. In 1992, Dr. Rubinstein founded the first program for public cord blood banking at NYBC, and he was honored at the symposium with a Lifetime Achievement Award for 40 years of dedicated service. Symposium participants also attended a welcome reception held the evening before the Symposium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AS THE WORLD'S PREMIER RESEARCH INSTITUTION IN TRANSFUSION MEDICINE, LINDSLEY F. KIMBALL RESEARCH INSTITUTE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN BLOOD RESEARCH, ATTRACTING THE HIGHEST CALIBER RESEARCH SCIENTISTS. At Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI) 20 world-class principal investigators and 50 scientists participate in crucial health-related research focused on the following conditions effecting millions of patients worldwide: HIV, hepatitis, babesiosis, onchocerciasis, malaria, and lymphatic filariasis. LFKRI laboratories are also focused on improving the care of patients with red blood cell related disorders, such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, and other blood cell autoimmune disorders. LFKRI researchers were the first to develop the solvent/detergent method for the inactivation of viruses in plasma and a practical screening test and affordable vaccine for hepatitis B. Other notable research achievements include: genetic characterization of more than one-third of the currently known blood group antigens and development of molecular diagnostic tests; cloning of the gene for Bloom s Syndrome; and development of the first HIV viral entry inhibitor to prevent HIV transmission. 10 nybc report to our communities

PROJECT ACHIEVE Established in 1993 as part of NYBC s Laboratory of Infectious Disease Prevention, Project ACHIEVE focuses on preventing HIV infection through testing potential HIV vaccines and developing preventive interventions. The laboratory has documented the extent of HIV infection in New York City, giving epidemiologists, infectious disease specialists, health departments, and community-based agencies valuable information for planning prevention strategies. Under the leadership of Beryl Koblin, PhD, Project ACHIEVE conducts behavioral intervention trials and develops innovative ways to help participants reduce their risk of HIV infection. Studies span all phases of vaccine research to support the international effort to find a preventive HIV vaccine. In addition to research, Project ACHIEVE continues to educate the community, increasing awareness of the need for a vaccine and other preventive measures as well as building support for research and advocacy for new trials.
