1 Programme Syllabus for the Horticultural Management: Gardening and Horticultural Production - Bachelor s Programme, 180 credits 1. Decision The Board of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences decided on June 2008 to establish three horticultural management programmes at first-cycle level starting autumn The programme syllabi for the horticultural management programmes were approved on 14 October 2008 by the Faculty Board at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences, to be valid from the academic year 2009/10. Revisions were made on 15 April 2009, 23 March 2010 and 1 June On 17 June 2011 the Board of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences decided to merge the Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme and the Horticultural Management Programme Marketing and Post Harvest, Bachelor s Programme into one programme with the name according to the decision of the Vice-Chancellor on 1 July 2011: Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme, from the academic year 2012/13. The Council of Education at Basic and Advanced level (GUR) announced on June 2011 that separate programme syllabi for the two horticultural management programmes (Gardening and Horticultural Production, and Garden Design) are motivated. In association with the changes mentioned above, revisions were made in the programme syllabi according to decisions in the Board of education on first and second cycle at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences on 25 May 2011 and the Faculty Board at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences on 23 May 2012*. This version of the programme syllabus applies from the academic year 2012/13. The Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme leads to a Degree of Bachelor at first-cycle level comprising 180 credits. The programme has the following programme code: LK Prior knowledge and other entry requirements 2.1. Previous studies Admission to the Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme requires, besides general eligibility, special eligibility as specified in field-specific eligibility 15: - Mathematics B - Natural Studies B* - Social Studies A *Separate syllabi for the horticultural management programmes will be decided on 23 May *(Biology A + Chemistry B + Physics A corresponds to Natural Studies B) In addition, weighted courses as specified in Field-specific eligibility 15 apply. Grade requirements: in each individual course above, the applicant must have earned at least a pass grade.
2 The requirements for special eligibility as described above can also be fulfilled with corresponding qualifications from current or earlier Swedish education. The requirement can also be fulfilled if the corresponding knowledge has been acquired in some other way. Admission to the different courses included in the programme is subject to individual eligibility requirements for each one Selection additional merits - the Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme A maximum of one-third of the places on the programme will be filled by special selection. To be included in the selection process, applicants must have relevant work experience lasting at least 18 months. This relevant work experience must have been carried out within the horticulture sector and must be in one of the cultivation/production, commerce/distribution, advisory/service. The work must comprise continuous 2-month periods at the same workplace from the time the applicant turns 16 years of age. The remaining places will be allocated according to academic grades. 3. Intended learning outcomes 3.1. General learning outcomes In accordance with the Swedish Higher Education Act (Chapter 1, Section 8), first-cycle programmes shall develop the students - ability to make independent and critical assessments, - ability to independently perceive, formulate and solve problems, and - preparedness to deal with change in working life. In the educational field concerned, in addition to knowledge and skills, students shall develop an ability to - seek and evaluate knowledge at a scholarly level, - follow the development of knowledge, and - exchange knowledge with other people, including people without specialist knowledge of the field Specific learning outcomes for the Degree of Bachelor In accordance with the supplement to the Ordinance for Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), the student must achieve the following learning outcomes for a Bachelor of Science: Knowledge and understanding For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall have: - demonstrated knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field, understanding of applicable methodologies in the field, specialized study in some aspect of the field as well as awareness of current research issues. Competence and skills For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall have: - demonstrated the ability to search for, gather, evaluate and critically interpret relevant information for a formulated problem and also discuss phenomena, issues and situations critically
3 - demonstrated the ability to identify, formulate and solve problems autonomously and to complete tasks within predetermined time frames - demonstrated the ability to present and discuss information, problems and solutions in speech and writing and in dialogue with different audiences, and - demonstrated the skills required to work autonomously in the main field of study. Judgement and approach For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall have: - demonstrated the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues - -demonstrated insight into the role of knowledge in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and - -demonstrated the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and ongoing learning. 3.3 Detailed learning outcomes for a Degree of Bachelor within the Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme Within the framework of the learning outcomes in the qualification description, SLU has further specified the following learning outcomes for the Degree of Bachelor: Knowledge and understanding To obtain a Degree of Bachelor within the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme, students must: - demonstrate knowledge of relevance for the horticulture sector, based on scientific principles, within biology, technology, business economics and horticultural science or landscape planning - have insights into the horticulture market in Sweden and internationally and have basic knowledge of how businesses and their stakeholders operate - have basic knowledge of how plants function as biological organisms and of their interactions with other organisms and the environment - have knowledge of how to work for sustainable development - have knowledge of controlling a horticultural crop to a specified time, quantity and quality based on the demands of the market and predict the environmental consequences within both small and large companies and enterprises - have knowledge and understanding of the marketing of horticultural products in the value chain from production to consumption and of quality and product development Competence and skills To obtain a Degree of Bachelor within the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme, students must: - demonstrate an ability to identify problems and issues relevant for the horticulture area - demonstrate an ability to locate and evaluate information within the horticulture area in a critical manner - demonstrate the skill and ability to communicate knowledge of the horticulture area, both orally and in writing, to various target groups
4 Judgement and approach To obtain a Degree of Bachelor, students must be aware of ethical issues concerning the impact of the horticulture sector on biological systems and their relations to the individual, the environment and society at different levels. 4. Possibilities for further study A student who has completed the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme and obtained the Degree of Bachelor of Science meet the specific entry requirements for admission to further studies in for example the following types of programmes at SLU: - Second cycle programmes The available programmes are specified in an appendix which is approved by the Board of education on first and second cycle at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences. 5. Content and structure 5.1. Courses The courses included in the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme are established by the Board of education on first and second cycle at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences and are presented in an appendix to the programme syllabus which also contains a description of the programme structure. Intended learning outcomes and course content are presented in the syllabus for each course Structure All students on the horticultural management programmes take courses worth around 70 university credits that cover the entire value chain from cultivation to consumption. A characteristic of this section is the close links between the production of horticultural plants and the handling and use of these and other horticultural products. In addition to these courses taken by all students, the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme includes in-depth courses on professional cultivation, horticultural products, post-harvest handling and marketing. Students have the opportunity to specialise in particular subject areas through choosing from the optional courses provided within or outside the programme structure during the third year. The programme concludes with an independent project worth 15 credits in which students can apply their knowledge, skills and methods of working to an actual issue within the area of the education.
5 6. Examination Each course includes one or several tests. The terms U, 3, 4 or 5 are used for grading the courses, unless there is an exemption decision. Grading criteria are described in a supplement to each course syllabus. Grades are determined by an examiner appointed by SLU. General rules and guidelines for assessment and grading are presented in internal directives for grading systems and examination rights and in regulations governing education on the first and second cycles at SLU. 7. Degree 7.1. Degree awarded after completion of the study programme A Degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology according to the programme syllabus of the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme is awarded following completion of course requirements (passed courses), according to the following: - a minimum of 60 credits within biology (G1N; G1F) - a minimum of 15 credits specialized study in biology (G2F) - a minimum of 15 credits independent project within biology (G2E) - a maximum of 30 credits may consist of passed courses at advanced level. The course requirements must also fulfill the following demands: - a minimum of 120 credits programme courses according to approved programme structure, - 15 credits independent project according to approved programme structure and instructions for the programme. A Degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Horticultural Science according to the programme syllabus of the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme is awarded following completion of course requirements (passed courses), according to the following: - a minimum of 60 credits within horticultural science (G1N; G1F) - a minimum of 15 credits specialized study in horticultural science (G2F) - a minimum of 15 credits independent project within horticultural science (G2E) - a maximum of 30 credits may consist of passed courses at advanced level. The course requirements must also fulfill the following demands: - a minimum of 120 credits programme courses according to approved programme structure, - 15 credits independent project according to approved programme structure and instructions for the programme. A Degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Business Administration according to the programme syllabus of the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme is awarded following completion of course requirements (passed courses), according to the following:
6 - a minimum of 60 credits within business administration (G1N; G1F) - a minimum of 15 credits specialized study in business administration (G2F) - a minimum of 15 credits independent project within business administration (G2E) - a maximum of 30 credits may consist of passed courses at advanced level. The course requirements must also fulfill the following demands: - a minimum of 120 credits programme courses according to approved programme structure, - 15 credits independent project according to approved programme structure and instructions for the programme. A student who fulfils the requirements for a Degree of Bachelor will, upon request, receive a degree certificate. The degree certificate will specify the qualification as a Degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology/Horticultural Science/Business Administration. The degree certificate will state that the studies are carried out according to the programme syllabus for the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme. Specific course requirements are shown in the programme structure, approved by the Board of education on first and second cycle at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences and presented as an appendix to the programme syllabus Other degrees the student may be awarded after completion of the programme Higher Education Diploma in Horticultural Management A Higher Education Diploma in Horticultural Management is achieved after fulfilled course requirements (passed courses) of 120 credits, including the following demands: - A minimum of 90 credits passed compulsory programme courses - A minimum of 15 credits passed elective programme courses according to approved programme structure - Passed independent project comprising at least 10 credits according to approved programme structure and instructions for the programme A student who fulfils the requirements for a Higher Education Diploma in Horticultural Management will, upon request, receive a degree certificate. The degree certificate will specify the qualification as a Higher Education Diploma in Horticultural Management Degree of Bachelor The courses that are included in the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme also meet the requirements of the following higher education qualifications, provided that SLU s requirements for general qualification are met: - Degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology/Horticultural Science/Business Administration.
7 8. Miscellaneous 8.1. Credit transfer Passed courses from other institutions of higher education, in Sweden or elsewhere, may be credited for in the degree. Deduction of credits can be made if there is substantial overlap between passed courses at SLU and courses that the student wishes to transfer. Credit transfers are not applicable if there is a substantial difference between the courses. Credit transfer requests are considered on an individual basis. Equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in an occupation may also be credited upon assessment Provisional regulations Students admitted to other educational programmes at SLU before 1 July 2009 can obtain a Degree of Bachelor, provided that the requirements stated under 7. Degree are fulfilled. If this student fulfils the requirements according to the approved programme structure for the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme, this shall be stated in the degree certificate. Students admitted to the Horticultural Management Programme before 1 July 2007 can obtain a Higher Education Diploma in Horticultural Management, provided that the requirements stated under 7. Degree are fulfilled.
8 Appendix 1 to programme syllabus for the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme Possibilities for further study during the academic year 2012/2013 A student who has completed the Horticultural Management Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor s Programme and obtained the Degree of Bachelor meets the specific entry requirements for admission to second cycle-studies within the relevant main subject: - Biology - Horticultural Science Also, the following programmes are offered at SLU: - Nature, Health and Garden - Master's Programme (60 credits) - Agroecology Master s Programme (120 credits) - Plant Biology Master s Programme (120 credits) This appendix to the programme syllabus is approved by the Board of education on first and second cycle at the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences on 28 March 2012 and is valid for the academic year 2012/2013.
