1 Second Announcement: RADAM th International Conference on Radiation Damage in Biomolecular Systems Madrid, Spain 30 June - 4 July 2010 Presentation The International RADAM conference, Radiation Damage in Biomolecular Systems, is an annual meeting with the main purpose of facilitating active communication among the different scientific and technological communities concerned with the study of basic interactions of electrons, photons, ions, and more recently positrons, with biologically relevant molecules as well as their possible applications in radiotherapy, radiodiagnostics and radiation protection. The main objective of this consortium is to obtain accurate knowledge of basic interaction mechanisms in order to determine energy deposition and various types of radiation effects at the molecular level. This knowledge of elementary processes is a necessary step for introducing technical improvements of diagnostics and therapies based on radiation uses. The earliest RADAM conferences (from 2004 to 2007) took place within the framework of the COST Action programme. Due to the success of this action, participants continued the meetings even after formal completion of the first COST Action programme. Thus, RADAM has become a true multidisciplinary forum for discussion and integration of the main advances in the field. It is also an excellent milieu for launching new collaboration and specific projects. In 2008 and 2009 RADAM meetings were held in Debrecen and Frankfurt, respectively. These meetings have facilitated new proposals on ion radiotherapy and nanodosimetry to be submitted to European funding programmes. Increasing use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for early tumour and metastasis diagnoses requires a deep knowledge of interaction mechanisms of positrons with biological materials (water, hydrocarbons and tissue equivalent materials) from their initial emission by radioactive sources to their final annihilation in the medium (positronium formation, direct ionisation, scattering, etc ). Supporting this initiative, together with the invitation of relevant scientist in the field of radiation interactions (photon, electrons, ions) and their biomedical applications, an additional effort will be made to attract specialists in the study of basic positron interactions in biomolecular systems. 3 Conference Venue The conference will be held at the "Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales" of UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) in Madrid close to the city centre (Paseo Senda del Rey nº Madrid).

Transport Madrid is well connected by air with the main cities in the world. Local public transport includes busses and an underground network connecting all key spots in the city. From the airport, underground line 8 (pink line) takes passengers downtown. From its terminal stop Nuevos Ministerios, lines 6 (grey line) and 10 (dark blue line) go directly to hotel Florida Norte (stop Príncipe Pío ). The conference site is at about 20 min walking distance along a quiet street from the hotel, but there is also a regular bus (line 46) connecting both. Additionally, the UNED campus can be easily reached from underground station Moncloa (line 6) by the bus lines A, 46, 160, and 161 (stop Puente de los Franceses ). This conference is conveniently linked to ECAMP 2010 (Salamanca, 4-9 July) through a bus connection arrangement to Salamanca on Sunday 4 th July in the afternoon, after the end of RADAM s scientific programme. 5 Scientific Programme The RADAM 2010 programme will start on Wednesday, 30 th June with the registration and welcome reception and end on Sunday 4th July after lunch. From Thursday morning to Sunday noon, scientific sessions will consist of oral and poster presentations as well as a RADAM round table. Equally, we invite participants to submit abstracts of their poster contributions. All abstracts have to be sent by to [email protected] no later than April 15 th. Please adhere to the format guidelines and templates available online in order to ensure a uniform look of the abstract book. Figures or tables may be included, but please always bear in mind the total limit of one A4 page. In case you experience problems with formatting, you may submit your abstract in an unformatted, simple text file with title, author and address information clearly indicated. The abstracts will be available online shortly before the conference. At the meeting, a hardcopy will be distributed to all participants.

6 Registration An electronic form is already available for registration online. All participants wishing to attend the conference are asked to fill this in. in case of technical difficulties, a pdf registration form can be downloaded and sent by fax ( ). For accompanying persons, registration fees include the conference dinner and social activities. Cancellations with a 75% of the conference fee being reimbursed are possible until 1 st June. Grants and financial support Local financial support will be mainly devoted to offer grants covering the RADAM 2010 registration fee, preferentially for PhD students and early postdocs. They will work on the basis of an initial payment and later reimbursement of the conference fee. In order to apply, please fill in the grant form available online and send it to the conference secretary by 15 th April together with a copy of the abstract. The respective decisions of the organizing committee will be communicated to all solicitants by 1 st May. Since the annual working group meeting of ECCL s WG1 will be integrated into the scientific programme, WG1 members attending RADAM 2010 will be eligible for reimbursement through COST action CM0601.
