3 It's our party we can do what we want It's our party we can say what we want It's our party we can love who we want We can kiss who we want We can sing what we want Ok...these are not my words, nor do I endorse them! They are, in fact, lyrics from a song called We Can t Stop by the popular singer Miley Cyrus. I don t listen to her music, but I recently became aware of these words when our staff member, Margaret Motto, spoke to my High School Confirmation Class. I find these lyrics scary and sad. They speak of an attitude of heart and mind which considers that we are unaccountable for our life, the only limits are ones that we set for ourselves (and those are few!) and that anything I do is my business alone. Doing whatever we want is a recipe that typically leads to bad choices. When we make poor decisions there are usually rippling effects not only for ourselves but for others, too. The oft-heard cry that I can do anything I want so long as I don t hurt anyone else is rooted in two false assumptions: first, we are not entitled to hurt ourselves because our lives, our bodies are not our own but are a gift from (and belong to) God; second, all of our actions impact others. Consider drivers who are distracted while thinking about painful parts of their lives, whose eyes are turned inward upon their hearts...and who wind up making dreadful (and deadly?) mistakes on the road. Or thoughtless and cruel people who vent their emotions in s or on social media...and wind up often hurting others because of their indiscretion. No man is an island... - there is no pain that does not spill over. The attitudes and assumptions behind the lyrics quoted above are not exclusive to adolescents; they seem to infect all age groups these days. But I do not intend to end the year of my Reflections Reflections from Fr. David The Family is meant to be an Icon of God for all! with a critical tirade. Instead, I want to move to a very positive invitation. As we move into a New Year, I invite us all to understand that our lives, our actions, how we live our own lives and in relationship to each other does matter. All that we do has an impact good or bad! This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. I really like the icon on this page. Rather than show the Holy Family with Jesus as an infant, we see him as a growing young man. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph was not merely an arena for a newborn! (This wonderful icon was written by Aidan Hart, one of the world s great iconographers. You can visit his website at aidanharticons.com/ ) We honor this Holy Family as a way of recognizing the vital role that all families play in being a sign (icon) of God s love and presence in the world. All families, all people have this vocation - to recognize that they have a role to play in this world that must move beyond what they want to what God wants. As we look for friends or relationships that might be more than friendship, As we look for possible spouses with whom to spend our life, As we live our lives as spouses, parents, single people, friends, children, neighbors, co-workers do we do so with the understanding that who I am and what I do does have an impact on the world; do we do so knowing that if the impact we have is not the one that God desires then we risk wounding the health of the human community; do we seek to establish relationships, repair relationships, solve conflicts, be present in this world to others...knowing that how we do so impacts the world? Our choices and actions are consequential! Let us be mindful of our lives and their purpose. In our households, families and family of faith may 2014 be a year when we try more faithfully to live the words,...thy will be done...! 6 Our Family in Faith Walking with Purpose Walking With Purpose (WWP) is a women s bible study by women for women who desire to grow in their faith using a scripture-based program that is fresh, relevant and focused on conversion of heart. Personal study and small group discussions will link our everyday challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. We are offering two, 6-week sessions of the Walking With Purpose bible study program entitled Living in Freedom-the freedom that only God can provide from February 11 March 18, 2014: Tuesday mornings from 9:30 11:30 a.m. Tuesday evenings from 7:00 8:30 p.m. Babysitting is available. The cost is $20 for materials, but please don t let this deter you as financial assistance is available. Our first session of Walking With Purpose, Living in the Father s Love, which was held in the fall, was well attended and well received. Many good things came of this first group and here are some of the comments: I enjoyed the fellowship and meeting wonderful women of our church, the real life application of the Bible to everyday life shared experiences, I liked talking with others about our faith and God s love, the material was good and I gained an understanding of the Bible verses, and members of our group were very warm and inviting. To register please contact our Core Team Leader, Grace Blaszak at gblaszak@sbcglobal.net or , stop at the Commons Reception Desk to pick up a registration form, or visit the parish website at with a link for more information. The group will meet each week to view and discuss Fr. Barron's DVD series, Catholicism, which dives into the truths of our Catholic faith and explores various topics like prayer, The Sacraments, The Saints, Mary and other aspects of our faith. ALL adults are welcome to stop by there is no cost and no registration is needed! For more information, contact Margaret Motto at , or mmotto@smip.org Meals Ministry Forming St. Mary Immaculate Parish is starting a Meals Ministry! This ministry will play a vital role in helping and healing our fellow parishioners as they go through major life transitions by providing them with the comfort of meals during these difficult times. Your gift of a hot meal goes beyond food, it is a gift of love and one that shows the recipient that they are known and cared for and a part of our family. We hope you will consider becoming a part of this ministry to make life a little easier for someone in need. Please look for more information about Meals Ministry in the coming months. At this time, our parish has an IMMEDIATE need for meals for one family. If you are able to volunteer to cook or deliver a meal to a family in need, please contact Elizabeth Gillman at neagillman@gmail.com. For information contact Marge at World Day of Peace - January 1, 2014 Who is the other that Christ calls you to encounter in this new year? In his 2014 Message for the World Day of Peace, Pope Francis urges us to open our hearts in a new way to those brothers and sisters affected by poverty, hunger, underdevelopment, conflicts, migrations, pollution, inequalities, and injustice. When we break free from indifference and see ourselves as members of one human family, we can truly encounter one another and build peace. Pope Francis message is the most recent in a long history of messages for the World Day of Peace beginning with Pope Paul VI in Visit for more resources. One day her father ordered one of his soldiers to put St Cecelia in a burning fire and kill her, but God was protecting her and she did not die. A nobleman wanted to marry her and she did not want to marry him but he forced her into marriage. Once day her husband came up and he did not believe that she had a guardian angel so he came up and the guardian angel was right next to her. She was a martyr which means to die for her faith. She and her husband both died and went to heaven in martyrdom. Then just a few years later Cecelia s body was found in Rome. Her body was still fresh, beautiful, and sweet. ~Written by SMI student Grace S. from Mrs. Lundberg s third grade class. Liturgy and Worship First Saturday Devotion on January 4 after 7:30 a.m. Mass The devotion of First Saturdays, as requested by Our Lady of Fatima, carries with it the assurance of the graces necessary for salvation at the hour of death. However, to derive profit from such a great promise of Our Lady, the devotion must be properly understood and duly performed. Knights of Columbus Good Shepherd Council #5573 Word of Life Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.. ~ Blessed Mother Teresa Palabra de Vida La vida es demasiado preciosa, no la destruyas. La vida es la vida; lucha por ella. ~ Beata Teresa de Calcuta Brothers In Christ The ministry of Brothers in Christ is a group of men who seek to help one another become better men through developing our relationship with Jesus. We acknowledge that we are all on a personal faith journey. Some of us are novices, some more experienced, and others, perhaps, just waiting to grow spiritually. We have many backgrounds and many gifts, but we share the same spirit. That spirit is the spirit of love and we do all we can to help one another, by being Christ in all his compassion for one another. We learn from the Word of God, meditation, readings, and our unique life experiences as men. You will find that our meetings are full of spirit, laughter, and inspiration. It is easy to feel the Holy Spirit moving and working within us individually and as a group. We meet every Saturday morning from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the North Wing Rooms A, B, and C across from the Adoration Chapel. All men age 18 and older are welcome to join our ministry. For more information or any questions you may have, please contact Ted Castro Sr. at or fax , and Rick Burke at or rfburke1@comcast.net. Please bring your bible. We will provide you with the Word Among Us. December 29, 2013 One Family in Faith Making Christ Known Page 15
