1 Handbook for incoming exchange students Faculty of Law and political science
2 Incoming Erasmus and international students enrolled at the Faculty of Law and Political Science are offered three options: 1) Diploma of Higher Studies (DES including ECTS) 2) Certificate in French Law (CDF) 3) National Diploma or University Diploma as follows: - 3 rd year of BA in Law - 1 st year of MA in law - Certificate in criminal science - Certificate in European Law - Certificate in intellectual property law 1) DIPLOMA OF HIGHER STUDIES (DES INCLUDING ECTS) Students will select courses according to the requirements of their home university from a selection offered by the Faculty of Law and Political Science. The available courses are to be selected from the three years of BA in Law and from the first year of any of the Master s degrees in Law and Political Science. Students wishing to follow Bachelor degree courses will be required to choose their courses from Serie 2. Students will be limited to 60 ECTS for the whole academic year (30 ECTS / semester). The European credits (ECTS) for courses are as follows: - 5 ECTS : lectures with associated tutorials (matières à TD) - 3 ECTS: tutorials (TD) - 6 ECTS: optional lectures Selection of courses with practical tutorial classes (TD) (see page 10) Students are requested to select only one tutorial class (matière à TD) for each semester. The home university may require students to choose 2 tutorial classes; in that case, the students must provide an authorization from their home university. Students are welcome to follow a language tutorial in English, German or Spanish selected in the 2 nd or 3 rd year of the BA program. Students must register in tutorial groups of about students. For that purpose, they must inform the International Office of the Faculty of Law and Political Science about the tutorial class selected one week before the beginning of tutorial classes (the deadline for registration will be determined at a later date). Once enrolled, students are not allowed to change groups. 2 Bureau Mobilité Internationale
3 For each subject taught in tutorial classes (TD), the students should attend 10 sessions of tutorial classes during the Spring semester (ie. 1,5 hour per class). In case of 3 unjustified absences in the tutorial classes during the semester, the student shall be given a Fail grade (0/20). For justified absences, students are requested to provide a medical certificate or any other valid document to their teaching assistant. Regular attendance at tutorial classes is expected; students will obtain one grade for continuous assessment (valid for both sessions) for every tutorial class. No resit session will be organized for tutorial classes. Written examinations are three hours long but one additional hour will be granted. A bilingual dictionary will be allowed, except for the examinations of 1 st year of BA. Selection of optional courses (see page 15) Students are requested to select several optional courses in their learning agreements for each semester. Sport is not considered as a course. Students wishing to take sport will have to choose one more course. Assessment in sport will take place in the 2 nd semester. Students wishing to take a language course (Spanish, German) must attend the 1 st year BA in law classes and get an authorization from their home university. Examination for the 1 st year of BA language courses will be oral examinations like the other optional courses. French as a foreign language classes French as a foreign language classes are offered on our Campus. Unless specifically mentioned, students will be automatically enrolled in French classes. French classes will be organized as follows: - intensive study period: 2 hours a day during the first 4 weeks after the orientation day - extensive study period: 2 hours a week during the semester. Upon their arrival, the students will be required to take a test to assess their level of French. They will then be dispatched in groups according to their level. French classes will be worth 5 ECTS for the 1 st semester and 3 ECTS for the 2 nd semester for a student studying the whole academic year and 5 ECTS for students studying only one semester. 3 Bureau Mobilité Internationale
4 Exams All the subjects are marked out of 20. Students who obtained a grade under 10 out of 20, or were absent in one or several exams of the first session (examinations in May), may register for the resit session at the same time as the first session, after reporting to the International Office of the Faculty of Law and Political Science. - The students who attend the resit session will have to take all the subjects they have not validated. In case of absence, the students will be given an ABI (unjustified absence) for the subjects they have not validated, and will not keep the grade they received in the 1 st session. They will receive 2 transcripts of records at the end of July (one ToR for the 1 st session and one ToR for the 2 nd session). - The students who do not attend the resit session will keep their grade and will receive only one transcript for the 1 st session. During the examinations, no arrangement will be made for the students having several oral tests on the same day at the same time. The students will need to inform their teacher that they have several oral exams scheduled at the same time. An arrangement will be possible if 2 written tests overlap. The calculation of the DES is not an average; the student will get the ECTS corresponding to the subjects validated with or without tutorials. All the subjects are marked out of 20 Students who do not attend examinations (written and oral tests) will get an ABI (unjustified absence) ie 0/20. Their absence will be justified if they provide a medical certificate. The students will sit for their exams in a room reserved for students granted one-hour extra time, extending normal extra time to 4 hours. One-hour written exams (optional subjects) as well as language tests will be taken orally. Registration for the resit sessions: students must attend the examinations. In case of absence, the students whose results in the 1 st session are under 10 out of 20 will be given a fail grade, ie. 0 out of 20. Students who have not registered for the resit session will keep their grade of the 1 st session. Grades will be posted on the University website (ENT) The examinations will take place in May (1 st session). A resit session is scheduled in June/July (2 nd session). Exam papers are anonymous The student is considered absent if he shows up later than 15 minutes after the beginning of the test. 5 2) CERTIFICATE OF FRENCH LAW (CDF) This certificate provides basic knowledge in French Law and is only offered to students who will study at the Faculty of Law and Political Science the whole academic year. Courses are organized as shown in the table below. The students must select 2 courses with associated tutorials for the academic year: civil law and administrative law plus 2 optional courses. Apart from fundamental courses, students must attend practical tutorials providing methodological support in Civil Law and Administrative law. Registration for the Certificate of French law is subject to the authorization of the Erasmus coordinator of the Faculty of Law. Students will be required to fill in a form which will be included in their registration package. 6 Selection of courses with practical tutorials For each semester, students must indicate both compulsory courses in Civil law and Administrative law in their learning agreement. Students will be registered in tutorial groups of students. For that purpose, they must indicate the courses they have selected to the International office of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at least one week before the beginning of tutorial classes. Once registered in a tutorial class, students may not change for another group. For every subject taught in tutorial classes (TD), the students should attend 10 sessions of tutorial classes per semester, namely one hour and a half per tutorial. In case of 3 unjustified absences in the tutorial classes during the semester, students shall be given a Fail grade (0 out of 20). For justified absences, the students will have to produce medical documentary evidence to their teaching assistant. Regular attendance is expected in the tutorial classes for which they will obtain a mark for continuous assessment (valid for 2 sessions no resit session will be organized for tutorial classes). Only one of the two courses with tutorial classes (civil law and administrative law) will involve a written examination. The exam will be 3 hours long but one hour additional time will be granted. A current bilingual dictionary will be allowed. The students shall inform the International Office of the Faculty of Law and Political Science which written exam they wish to take (civil law or administrative law) when registering for their exams (the date will be specified later). The second exam will be taken orally. Selection of optional courses Students are only allowed one optional subject per semester (see list of optional subjects page 15) which will be recorded in their learning agreement. Sport is not considered as a course. Students wishing to take sport will have to choose another course. Assessment in sport will take place in the 2 nd semester. Students wishing to take a language course must attend the classes of the 1er year of BA in Law and get an authorization from the home university. The examination for the language course of the 1 st year of BA in Law will be oral like the other optional courses. Students will be assessed on French legal culture on an oral examination in front of a jury. The purpose of this oral exam is mainly to assess their knowledge of the French legal system, the basic notions etc. in particular in Civil law and Administrative law (program of 2 nd year of BA). All exams are marked out of 20. The students pass if they obtain a minimum overall average mark of 10 out of Bureau Mobilité Internationale
7 The certificate involves two exam sessions (in January and May) and a resit session in June. Students failing the first session of the CDF will keep the marks equal or superior to 10 out of 20 and must resit the other subjects. In case of absence, they will get a Fail grade (0 out of 20). Exams The calculation of the CDF is an average, the student who has 10/20 will validate his CDF. The student who does not confirm his CDF in the 1 st session will necessarily have to go to the resit session for the non validated subjects (marks<20). All the subjects are marked out of 20. Students who do not take an exam (written or oral exams) will receive an ABI (unjustified absence) amounting to 0/20. The students will compose during 4 hours in a room reserved for the étudiants tiers-temps. The assessment for one hour subjects (optional subjects) as well as for the English language course and the French Legal Culture will made orally. The assessment for sport will take place in the second semester (May/ June) 3) APPLICATION FOR A NATIONAL DEGREE OR A UNIVERSITY DIPLOMA Only students nominated to study at the University of Bordeaux for the whole academic year are given the opportunity to apply for a National Degree or a University Diploma. Students must take the examinations and the compulsory tests according to the regulations applying to the National Degree or the University Diploma concerned. No withdrawal during the course of the year will be accepted. Students shall comply with the general regulations: no special examination will be organized for them. Nevertheless, they are entitled to a standard monolingual dictionary. They will be granted the ECTS corresponding to the courses, to the semester units and the years of study as stated in the program of the degree in which they have enrolled. Application for a National Degree of a University Diploma must be allowed by the Erasmus coordinator of the Faculty of Law. Exams To be allowed to resit exams, students must have a scored mark of no less than 8 our of 20 each semester. 4) MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION EXAMS The examinations will take place in January and in May (session 1). A resit session is scheduled in June (session 2 or session de rattrapage). Exam papers are anonymous Students missing an exam will get an F for unjustified absences and will be declared absent if absences are justified (medical certificate). Students are considered absent if they show up later than 15 minutes after the beginning of the test. No extra time will be granted for delays. DISPLAYING OF INFORMATION Dates of written tests will be displayed on the website of the University of Bordeaux and on dedicated notice boards at least 3 weeks before the examinations. Dates of oral tests will be displayed on the notice board. Students having several tests on the same day at the same time will need to inform their teachers that they have other tests to take. Exam results will be made public in mid-february and mid-june for the first session and in mid-july for the resit session. To get access to their results, students will have to activate their account on (the activation key is indicated on the certificate of enrolment.).
