1 Basic Crochet Techniques Chain Stitches Loop the yarn as illustrated (1), Slip the crochet hook into the loop, lay the yarn over the hook = yarn over (2). Pull the hook with the yarn through the loop = 1st chain stitch (3). Work every next chain stitch in the same manner with a yarn over and pulling the yarn through. Work a number of stitches to make a foundation chain (4). Slip Stitches Slip stitches are used to close a round. Insert the crochet hook into the following stitch (1). Lay yarn over hook and draw the yarn through the stitch and the loop on the hook (2). 1 yarn over, draw yarn through 2 slip stitch is complete

2 Double Crochet Stitches Insert the crochet hook into the following stitch, yarn over and draw through (1). Now yarn over again and draw yarn through both loops on the hook (2). Decrease One Double Crochet To decrease 1 stitch of double crochet, work 2 double crochet stitches together as follows: * Insert your hook into the following stitch, yarn over hook and draw yarn through, repeat from * once (1). Now yarn over hook and draw yarn through all loops on the hook (2). The instructions use the abbreviation dec 1 (decrease one) to indicate when to decrease one double crochtet stitch. Increase One Double Crochet To increase 1 stitch of double crochet, work 2 double crochet stitches into a single stitch of the previous row / round. The instructions use the abbreviation inc 1 (increase one) to indicate when to increase one double crochtet stitch.

3 Half Treble One yarn over (1), insert crochet hook into the 2nd following stitch. Now yarn over and draw thread through all three loops on the hook (3). Treble One yarn over (1), insert crochet hook into the 2nd following stitch. Now yarn over and draw thread through 2 loops on the hook (3). Yarn over again and draw thread through the last 2 loops on the hook. Double Treble Yarn over twice (1), insert crochet hook into the following stitch. Now yarn over and draw thread through 2 loops on the hook (3). Yarn over again and draw thread through the next 2 loops on the hook (4). Yarn over one more time and draw thread through the last 2 loops on the hook (5).

4 Triple Treble Yarn over 3 times (1), insert crochet hook into the following stitch. Yarn over and draw thread again through 2 loops on the hook (3). Yarn over and draw thread again through the next 2 loops on the hook (4). Yarn over one more time and draw thread through the last 2 loops on the hook. A Thread Ring 1: Wrap the yarn around your index finger twice. 2-3: Draw the long piece of yarn under and through both loops. 4: Draw the yarn through this loop = 1st chain stitch : * Insert the crochet hook into the thread ring, yarn over hook and draw yarn through. Then yarn over and draw yarn through both loops on the hook (= 1st double crochet), repeat from * according to the instructions.

5 8: Now carefully pull the beginning of the yarn (long black arrow). This will pull the yarn into the ring (red arrow). The yarn is pulled in the direction of the short black arrow. 9: Pull the yarn at the red arrow to shorten the other yarn of the thread ring. The double crochet stitches now lie close together (10). 10: Pull the yarn (black arrow), thus causing the 1st thread of the ring to disappear. 11: The thread ring is now complete. How To Close a Round The 4 illustrations on the next page show you how to close a round. Illus. 1: The black arrow indicates the double crochet stitch into which you insert the hook to close the round with a slip stitch. Illus. 2: The green loop is formed after closing the round. Illus. 3: Work 1 chain stitch after closing the round = red loop (does not count as a stitch). After the chain stitch, work the next double crochet by inserting hook into the following double crochet stitch (not into the stitch below the chain stitch). Illus. 4: When closing the next round, work the last double crochet into the stitch shown in green (illus. 4), then close the round with a slip stitch: To work the slip stitch, insert the hook into the stitch to the left of the red loop (illus. 4).

6 How to Begin a Row After Turning After turning the work, make 1 chain stitch for turning. To crochet the next stitch, insert the hook into the stitch indicated by the black arrow.

7 Changing Colours 1: The slip stitch to close the round is worked into the stitch indicated by the black arrow. 2: To change colours, use the new colour when drawing the yarn through for the slip stich to close the round. 3: 1 chain stitch for the next round. 4: The 1st double crochet of the next round. 5: Work 1 double crochet into the last stitch, indicated by the arrow. 6: Leave out the chain at the beginning of the round (see also: How To Close a Round). 7: Close the round with a slip stitch. haakpret info@haakpret.eu I wish you lots of creative ideas and fun crocheting, Anja Toonen
