1 History Stills from our new series Ottomans vs Christians Julian Davison travels the Medditerranean to learn more about the vicious power struggle between Christian Europe and the formidable Muslim Ottoman Empire that lasted for more than four centuries. Episode 1: Empire Builders Julian Davison begins his journey in Istanbul, the gateway between East and West and former epicentre of the Eastern Christian Empire of Byzantium. Julian charts the rise of the Ottomans and their momentous conquest of Constantinople. He then follows the conquest of the most celebrated of Ottoman Sultans, Suleiman the Magnificent, by setting sail for Rhodes, where he learns more about the infamous Christian Crusader Knights of St John the scourge of the Ottoman Empire. 2 Episode 2: Masters of the Mediterranean Julian Davison travels to Malta to learn about one of the most famous seiges in European history, and the legacy of the Knights Hospitaller. He then sets off to learn more about the Ottoman s most formidable competition for domination of the Mediterranean, the Venetian Republic. Key Stage min CC Episode 3: Clash of Civilisations The war for domination of the Mediterranean intensifies with the seige of Famagusta in Cyprus, which leads to Christian Europe s unification against the Ottomans. Julian Davis then travels to Venice to learn about the Arsenal, and one of the bloodiest maritime conflicts in history, the legendary Battle of Lepanto.
