1 FOLIA HISTORICO NATURALIA MUSEI MATRAENSIS : Records of Ephemeroptera and Odonata from the Biebrza National Park, Poland TIBOR KOVÁCS, ANDRÁS AMBRUS, PÉTER OLAJOS & GÁBOR SZILÁGYI ABSTRACT: This paper provides data on 20 Ephemeroptera and 42 Odonata species from the Biebrza National Park, Poland. Introduction There are a number of publications about the Ephemeroptera and Odonata fauna of the Białowieża National Park (GŁAZACZOW 2001, KALKMAN & DIJKSTRA 2000, ŁABĘDZKI 2001), but no such information is available from the largest national park of Poland. Results of 4 sampling days in the territory of the Biebrza National Park, rich in valuable water bodies are provided in this paper. Material and methods Studies were made in the period between June 30 and July 3, Twenty-two sampling sites were studied (some of them in Figs. 1-6), including all the characteristic water types the target area. The localities with WGS-84 coordinates are given below. For collecting methods of larvae see KOVÁCS et al. (1998). Odonata exuviae were singled, while adults collected by sweeping net. In case of Ephemeroptera larvae determination of Caenis luctuosa/macrura complex is still in progress. The full Ephemeroptera material, and the voucher specimens of Odonata larvae (marked with MM) are preserved in 70% ethanol, and housed in the Mátra Museum (Gyöngyös, Hungary). Abbreviations: AA = András, Ambrus, KF = Krzysztof Frąckiel, KT = Tibor, Kovács, NH = Hajnalka, Nagypál, OP = Péter, Olajos, CW = Cezary Werpachowski; L = larva, E = exuviae, A = adult; MM = Mátra Museum. Results and discussion From June 30 to July 3, 2008, 20 Ephemeroptera (larva) and 42 Odonata (32 larva, 20 exuviae, 36 imago) species were found in 22 sampling sites within the Biebrza National Park, in total 60 mayfly and 263 dragonfly records. Regarding mayflies the following are found Red List of threatened animals in Poland: Baetis digitatus VU, B. pentaphlebodes, Brachycercus harrisellus LC, Caenis pseudorivulorum NT (cf. KŁONOVSKA-OLEJNIK 2002). In case of Odonata Aeshna viridis LC and 92
7 Somatochlora arctica VU (cf. BERNARD et al. 2002) are on the same list. The latter is also found in the Polish Red Data Book (cf. BUCZYŃSKI & TOŃCZYK 2004). The following species are listed in Annex II and/or Annex IV of the Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora: Aeshna viridis (IV), Gomphus flavipes (IV), Ophiogomphus cecilia (II, IV), Leucorrhinia pectoralis (II, IV). The two most important water flows for mayflies are rivers Jegrznia Baetis digitatus, B. pentaphlebodes and Biebrza Brachycercus harrisellus, Caenis pseudorivulorum. None of the rare psammophilous species (Ametropus fragilis, Procloeon macronyx, Pseudocentroptiloides nana, Brachycercus minutus) of River Narew was found, but these are known (cf. GŁAZACZOW 2004) from lower river sections (Laskoviec) compared to the one we studied (GieŁczyn). Based on Odonata larvae and exuviae habitats of the following species are to be highlighted: Gomphus flavipes Biebrza, Narew; Ophiogomphus cecilia Narew; Aeshna viridis Mścichy: channel, Osowiec-Twierdza: moat of fortress, Wierciszewo: Narew oxbow lake; Somatochlora arctica Chojnowo: peatbog; Leucorrhinia pectoralis Osowiec-Twierdza: between Fort III and Czar-road (3 km), peatbog. Further valuable, species rich sites are Jegrznia, Jezioro Tajno and Osowiec-Twierdza: between Fort III and Czar-road (4 km), peatbog. Acknowledgements: We are especially grateful to Krzysztof FRĄCKIEL and Cezary WERPACHOWSKI (both from Biebrza National Park Administration, Osowiec-Twierdza) for providing us a lot of practical field and professional information. Special thanks should be passed to Hajnalka NAGYPÁL (Mályi) for the excellent logistic support provided for the team during the field trip. Our studies were supported by the Biebrza National Park Administration (Osowiec-Twierdza) and the Hortobágy National Park Directorate (Debrecen) in the framework of their partnership agreement.
