Canvas Student Guide: Course Description The finance function and its relation to other decision-making areas in the firm; the study of theory and techniques in acquisition and allocation of financial resources from an internal management perspective. Course Goals Demonstrate an understanding of the role of finance in a corporation, with emphasis on the theory and tools that are used to help company leaders make sound financial decisions. 3 Course Requirements and Assignments EXAM: Three midterm exams and a final exam will be offered in class on the dates specified in the course schedule. Only two of the three midterm exams need to be taken. In any case, only two highest midterm exam scores will be evaluated towards a final letter grade. Make-up exams will be allowed only under extreme circumstances. QUIZ: The quizzes will cover the reading, lecture and discussion material usually from the preceding week. Each quiz will consist of multiple choice/essay questions or problems. The essay questions will be answerable in a few words. For analytical problems you need to provide a numerical answer. If missed, these quizzes cannot be made up. Students missing class or arriving after the quiz has been administered will not be allowed to take it. A perfect score on all quizzes will produce a bonus of 10 additional points. TEAM PRESENTATION: Just about every class, a team will present on finance topics and issues that are in the news. Any topic related and relevant to our course is fair game. This presentation should take no more than five minutes. Each team member is expected to present. Feel free to use PPT slides to support your presentation, or use a web link as needed. If you are responsible for this presentation, please come to class on time. You will lose points if there are delays or we lose valuable class time. Teams are required to put a ½ to 1-page summary of their presentation on Canvas discussion board by 5pm on the day before the presentation. The summary should be professional looking, free from grammatical and spelling errors, and written with a single voice. Team members are expected to carry an equal share of the teamwork load. Teams will provide anonymous peer evaluations for each teammate, and team members who fail to make satisfactory contribution to the team will be penalized. Further details on the presentation requirements and grading standards for team presentations will be discussed in class and provided as a separate document in Canvas. BLOOMBERG CERTIFICATION: Students can earn extra credit points by completing Bloomberg certifications. Students with food will be asked to leave the building. Students who disrupt the course by eating and do not leave the building will be referred to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University. Cell Phones: Students will turn their cell phones off or put them on vibrate mode while in class. They will not answer their phones in class. Students whose phones disrupt the course and do not stop when requested by the instructor will be referred to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University. Computer Use: In the classroom, faculty allow students to use computers only for class-related activities. These include activities such as taking notes on the lecture underway, following the lecture on Web-based PowerPoint slides that the instructor has posted, and finding Web sites to which the instructor directs students at the time of the lecture. Students who use their computers for other activities or who abuse the equipment in any way, at a minimum, will be asked to leave the class and will lose participation points for the day, and, at a maximum, will be referred to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University for disrupting the course. (Such referral can lead to suspension from the University.) Students are urged to report to their instructors computer use that they regard as inappropriate (i.e., used for activities that are not class related). Academic Honesty: Faculty will make every reasonable effort to foster honest academic conduct in their courses. They will secure examinations and their answers so that students cannot have prior access to them and proctor examinations to prevent students from copying or exchanging information. They will be on the alert for plagiarism. Faculty will provide additional information, ideally on the green sheet, about other unacceptable procedures in class work and examinations.
