9 Chapter 2: printers Probe Deployment This section contains the system requirements and deployment information for the printers probe. This section contains the following topics: Supported Platforms (see page 9) System Requirements (see page 9) Software Requirements (see page 9) Probe Deployment Information (see page 10) Supported Platforms The printers probe supports the same set of operating systems and databases as supported by the Nimsoft Server solution. Please refer to the Nimsoft Compatibility Support Matrix for the latest information on supported platforms. System Requirements The printers probe should be installed on systems with the following minimum resources: Memory: 2-4GB of RAM. Probe's OOB configuration requires 256MB of RAM CPU: 3GHz dual-core processor, 32-bit or 64-bit Software Requirements The printers probe requires the following software environment: Nimsoft Monitor Server 6.5 or later Nimsoft Robot 5.70 or later Java Virtual Machine 1.6 or later (typically installed with NMS 5.0 and above) Any one of the following Web Browsers: Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox 15.0 or later Chapter 2: printers Probe Deployment 9

10 Probe Deployment Information Probe Deployment Information There are two ways to distribute archive packages. You can distribute the package within Infrastructure Manager or use the standalone Nimsoft Distribution application. See Probe Deployment for more information on deploying probes. 10 printers Guide

11 Chapter 3: printers Configuration The probe monitors local printers defined on the computer. Remote printers are included when a user name/password is supplied for listing these.the threshold definitions apply to all print queues defined on your system. This section describes the configuration concepts and procedures for setting up the printers probe. 13 Probe Configuration The fields in the above dialog are explained below: Check interval The number of seconds between each time printers and print queues are checked. Log properties Log size Sets the size of the probe s log file to which probe-internal log messages are written. The default size is 100 KB. When this size is reached, the contents of the file are cleared. Log-level The log-level determines the level of detail written to the log file. Log as little as possible during normal operation to minimize disk consumption, and increase the amount of detail when debugging. Fetch remote printers as user Finds all local printers for the computer the probe is running on. When specifying domain/user and a password in these fields, the probe will also find network printers defined by this user. The probe adds a watcher for each of the printers found and you will find a list of these watchers under the Status tab. Default thresholds The default thresholds are used when a new printer profile is created, to suggest sensible values for the profile. Once the printer profile is created, the values there are used. The values can be modified by editing the watchers under the Status tab. Chapter 3: printers Configuration 13

14 Probe Configuration The Status Tab This tab presents a list of the known printers being monitored. Make sure the printers you want to monitor are selected. The following commands are made available by right-clicking in the list: Add print watcher The currently defined printers are automatically found by the probe the first time it is run. You may add monitoring of additional network printers by creating a profile using this option. Edit printer watcher Enables you to change the printer options for the selected printer. Remove printer watcher Removes the selected printer watcher. Please note that the probe will re-generate watchers for defined printers. Refresh Fetches the current state and queue length for the printers. List printer queue Displays a list of queue entries for the selected printer. 14 printers Guide

15 Probe Configuration Add Printer Watcher The fields in the above dialog are explained below: Printer Name Name of the printer. Printer Type Active Watch Selects type of the printer, such as local and remote. Determines if the printer should be monitored. The printer and queue parameters you want to be watched. Status Generate an alarm message when the printer status is not idle or printing. Queue length Generate an alarm message when the queue length (number of printing jobs in the queue) of the printer grows beyond the parameters you specify. Printing job age Generates an alarm message when the job being printed is submitted longer ago than the specified number of seconds. Quality of Service messages Check these options if you want Quality of Service messages to be sent for queue length and queue status. Chapter 3: printers Configuration 15

16 Probe Configuration Current parameters These fields display current information of the printer. You cannot edit these fields. The Messages Tab This tab contains the list of alarm messages defined. Double-clicking an alarm message displays the corresponding Message properties dialog, which allows you to to edit the message properties. Message Properties 16 printers Guide

17 Probe Configuration The fields in the above dialog box are as follows: Identification Name The identification name of the alarm message. This field is read-only. Token Refers to the checkpoint. It is preset by the probe and is therefore not modifiable. Message Severity Alarm Text The text of the alarm message. Typing $ in this field, all valid variables will be listed.
