1 SCOPE & SEQUENCE FOR THEOLOGY II (10 TH GRADE YEAR) (Referenced to USCCB s Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age, except for a 4-week insertion of Theology of the Body for Teens) USCCB Course 3 ToBfT USCCB Course 4 Course Title: The Mission of Jesus Christ (The Paschal Mystery) Course Scope: This is a 1-semester course for 10 th graders whose purpose is to help students understand all that God has done for us through his Son, Jesus Christ. Through this course of study, students will learn that for all eternity, God has planned for us to share eternal happiness with him, which is accomplished through the redemption Christ won for us. Students will learn that they share in this redemption only in and through Jesus Christ. They will also be introduced to what it means to be a disciple of Christ and what life as a disciple entails. Course Sequence: As laid out below, for use with text The Paschal Mystery-Christ s Mission of Salvation (St. Mary s Press) Course Title: Theology of the Body for Teens Course Scope: This is a 4-week course whose purpose is to help students understand God s plan for love and life. They will explore the meaning of their bodies and of sexual desire as it relates to the purpose of their existence. Course Sequence: As laid out below, for use with text Theology of the Body for Teens (Ascension Press) Course Title: Jesus Christ s Mission Continues in the Church Course Scope: This is a 1-semester course for 10 th graders (2 nd semester) whose purpose is to help students understand that in and through the Church, they encounter the living Jesus Christ. They will be introduced to the fact that the Church was founded by Christ through the Apostles and is sustained by him through the Holy Spirit. The students will come to know that the Church is the living Body of Christ today. This Body has both divine and human elements. In this course, students will learn not so much about events in the life of the Church, but about the sacred nature of the Church. Course Sequence: As laid out below, for use with textbook The Church: Christ in the World Today (St. Mary s Press) Aug 20-Sept 2 KEY UNDERSTANDINGS Unit 1: Why Did God Redeem Us? God created all the world as essentially good. The Scriptures use figurative and symbolic language to convey religious truth, as exemplified in Gen 1:1-11 Original Sin entered the world when Adam and Eve chose to reject a God-centered life in favor of a self-centered life. 2 Sept 3-12 Unit 2: How Does the Incarnation Fulfill God s Promise of Redemption? God responded to Adam and Eve s sin with a promise of redemption. God offered a series of covenants to our ancestors in faith, which culminated in the promise of a Messiah. The promise of the redemption is fulfilled in Jesus The Word of God became flesh to restore us to covenantal love with God and others. Jesus public ministry begins with his baptism & triple temptation Jesus parables proclaim the Good News of God s Reign Jesus miracles are examples of God s Reign in action. Jesus gift of the Eucharist gives us a glimpse of the Reign of God on earth and a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. Jesus suffering and death were acts of redemptive love. Resurrection of Jesus was not only a historical event, but it also transcends history. Faith in the Resurrection is a defining belief of Christianity. Unit 5: Jesus Ascension & Sending of the Holy Spirit Make Possible Our Redemption In the Ascension the resurrected Jesus returns to his heavenly home. The sending of the HS at Pentecost fulfills Jesus promise to be with us forever. We participate in the Paschal Mystery through the sacramental life of the Church. 3 Oct 29-Nov 13 Nov Dec 1-9 Dec Unit 6: Through the Mystery of His Suffering, Jesus Stands in Solidarity with all Humanity and Calls Us to Do the Same In his suffering and death, Jesus stands in solidarity with all humanity. We are called to follow the example of Jesus by standing with and serving those who suffer. Jesus gives us a powerful example of redemptive suffering, suffering willingly taken on for the good of others. When viewed through the eyes of faith, suffering presents us with a unique opportunity to see and experience God s grace. Unit 7: We Experience the Grace of the Paschal Mystery Through Participation in the Prayer Life of the Church Through prayer we experience the grace of the Paschal Mystery and grow in our relationship with God. The Scriptures are a source and guide for prayer. Prayer can take many forms and expressions. Both individual and communal prayer connect us with believers everywhere. Unit 8: The Paschal Mystery Calls Us to Holiness We are all called to holiness. We are strengthened to live out this call by the grace of the HS and the community of faith. We respond to this call through words and actions of love and justice, especially on behalf of those who are poor and marginalized. (Images of the Church) The media and society communicate mixed messages about the meaning of the Catholic Church. The word church comes from the Greek and Latin for convocation or assembly but can also refer to a liturgical assembly, a local parish community, or the gathering of the faithful worldwide. The Acts of the Apostles and the Pauline letters give us insight into the way the early Church understood itself. The models of the Church illustrate its many dimensions and functions. Unit 2: What is the origin of the Church? Jesus instituted the Church to continue his mission; it is a community planned by God the Father, beginning with god s promise to Abraham. The HS revealed the Church at Pentecost. The HS inspired the Apostles mission. The HS gifts the Church for its mission and is present in and through it. 6 Apr 30-May 11 May May May Unit 7: The Church Interprets the Signs of the Time in Light of the Gospel The Magisterium interprets how the Scriptures and Tradition related to the events and challenges of today. The Magisterium communicates its teaching in a variety of different ways at different levels from the Vatican, national conferences of bishops, bishops teachings, the preaching of priests at Mass, teachers and catechists, and the conduct and words of everyday Catholics. Church members must learn how to make decisions about applying Church teaching to their circumstances The Church makes moral judgments about political and social matters when human dignity or salvation is at risk. The Church s mission is distinct from political authorities, even when it speaks in the political arena. Unit 8: God Calls Us to live as disciples in the Church God saves us in community with others rather than by ourselves. Discipleship is not just about following rules; rather, the Church shapes disciples into the image of Jesus Christ. Discipleship means being salt and light for the world by contributing our gifts to the Church and to the human community. Christ enriches us in the Church through the Sacraments, prayer, the Eucharist, charity, service, and justice.
