10 Water Reuse Oil sands tailing management Alberta has proven reserves of 170 B barrels of oil as bitumen ~ 20 % recoverable by mining processes, 80 % recoverable by in-situ processes, e.g. SAGD Kemira partners around a research chair in water quality management for oil sands extraction driven by Canadian government at the University of Alberta Oil sands tailings management Kemira will develop chemistries and processes to remediate tailings and avoid the use of tailings ponds Currently 720 Million m 3 of fluid fine tailings in existing ponds covering 130 km 2 Urgent need to clean up existing tailings ponds and avoid generation of new ponds. Legislation require reduction of fluid tailings accumulation and to specify dates for closure of fluid tailings pond deposits Bitumen extraction Kemira is developing chemistries to improve the extraction efficiency for poor quality ores in the surface mining process 10
