PUB AID Survey Results April 2011 Overview Report - Final

Introduction Total Sample of nearly 1500 outlets taken from replies to the Pub Aid website and direct conversations with licensees undertaken by CGA using our Outlet Index database The sample was specially created by CGA and Pub Aid to provide a cross section of pub and tenure types with a broad geographical spread the 1487 responses provide an extremely robust analytical base with a statistical error rate of well under +/- 5% at GB level CGA worked closely with RP Databases Limited and the Pub Aid marketing team to formulate a set of questions which cover all aspects of charitable activity within the on trade pub sector Additional analysis, insight and commentary is provided, where applicable, to illustrate individual points By presenting all these elements together we can clearly show how much the pub industry contributes to charity on a consistent basis

Key Findings 77% of respondents pubs provided some level of charitable contribution during 2010 with expectation raising to 91% during the course of 2011 On average each pub providing charity events contributes over 2,140 a year to their chosen charities As much as 101 million a year is potentially raised by the Great British Pub The top 5 named charities with the most support are Help for Heroes Air Ambulance Cancer Research UK RNLI British Legion (Poppy Appeal) Quiz nights/ raffles are the most popular form of event used to raise money The increased sense of community that involvement in charitable activities provides is considered the most important benefit by respondent pubs

Individual survey responses

Intro 1. Are you a member of the BII? Over half all responses to this introductory question which was asked by CGA telemarketers only are members of the BII Where Unknown responses were provided this was from managers as opposed to tenants/ owners Answer based on 586 responses

Intro 2. Can you confirm if you are the owner, leaseholder or manager? The proportion of respondents within the sample was evenly distributed between different pub tenure types This has allowed the Pub Aid survey to provide a broad and representative response from the industry Answer based on 1479 responses

Q1. Have you heard of Pub Aid previously? Where this question was asked of a random sample through the CGA telephone survey only 11% of respondents had previously heard of Pub Aid However, the latest Pub Aid survey project has given - and will continue to provide a significant opportunity to promote and market itself to a wider audience Answer based on 586 responses

Q2. Did your pub carry out any charitable activities in 2010? Although almost 90% of random sample respondents had not previously heard of Pub Aid over three quarters of the same set of replies show they carried out some form of charitable activity in 2010 This provides further evidence that charity is an important element of the everyday framework of the Great British Pub Answer based on 586 responses

Q2A. If No, what are your reasons for not doing any charitable activities? Of those that didn t do any charitable activity in 2010 over half (55%) suggested that with knowledge and support they would likely get involved Only 45% of this small sample of non charity pubs suggested they would not support charity Answer based on 135 responses

Q3. How much did your pub raise in total for charity in 2010 (to the nearest 500)? The most popular annual charity sum raised was 500 (24%) However, two thirds raised 1000 or above Suggesting that many pubs look beyond the traditional collecting boxes and small scale activities to collect larger sums of money than ever Answer based on 391 responses

Q4. Name the main charities your pub supported in 2010, and how much was raised for each one? The top individual named charities are Help for Heroes and the Air Ambulance accounting for over half a million pounds of the money raised Projected estimates suggest that the Great British Pub raises over 100 million a year for charitable causes Answer based on 1147 responses

Q5. What kind of activities did your pub undertake to raise the money? Almost 60% of all respondents used quiz nights and/ or raffles to raise money A significant number of pubs provide more than one type of activity over the year with sports and music being the most popular combination Answer based on 1487 multiple responses

Q6. How many collecting tins/ jars did you have on the bar in 2010? Over 90% of pubs have at least one collecting tin/ jar Three quarters provide 2, 3 or more for customers to provide money to charity This is still seen as a traditional, simple and easy way to collect money, but events are increasingly seen as more effective ways of promoting good causes Answer based on 1375 responses

Q7. How many organisations in your local area benefitted from your pub donating free meals/ nights, etc to them in 2010? Three quarters (74%) of respondents suggest that local charities have benefitted specifically from their pubs donations Only 26% look to events on a national basis only - meaning community orientated support is extremely important to the Great British Pub Answer based on 1297 responses

Q8. What types of local and national media supported your fundraising activities in 2010? Local and Regional Newspapers are the overwhelming vehicle (76%) by which charitable pub events are promoted again emphasising the community nature of many of these activities Commercial and local BBC radio stations also have a prominent part to play in supporting fundraising Answer based on 658 multiple responses (options 1-4)

Q9. What kind of celebrities supported your fundraising activities in 2010? Sports stars often from the world of professional football and darts appear to be the dominant celebrities supporting local fundraising often tying in with the nature of the charitable events themselves General celebrities (such as reality TV participants) and musicians also play an important role Answer based on 129 multiple responses (options 1-2)

Q10. How do you think your pub benefitted from carrying out charitable activities in 2010? Overwhelmingly respondents suggest that the community links are the most important way in which the pub benefits from charitable events Further emphasising the concept of the pub as the hub and often the very heart of the community especially in more rural areas Answer based on 1235 multiple responses

Q11. Is your pub carrying out charitable activities during 2011? Less than 10% of all pubs polled suggested that they would not be involved during 2011 The higher percentage (10% increase) of positive respondents over 2010 shows that more and more pubs are seeing the positive benefits of charitable activities for the venue, the community and (most importantly) the charities themselves Answer based on 1481 multiple responses

Q11A. If Yes, How much do you hope to raise during the year? Over half (51%) of respondents hope to raise up to 5000 over the course of 2011 for charity With 9% hoping to attain more than there is a great opportunity for the Great British Pub to improve on its 2010 average of over 2000 per venue Answer based on 1258 responses

Additional Comments Respondents provided specific additional comments regarding how the profile of the Great British pub can be improved in the national media - By continued support of charitable organisations & focusing on the positive news rather than the negative Promoting the events and support that the great British pubs give to their community and whilst playing a big part in the heart of the community A responsible, controlled and accountable environment in which to serve alcohol, unlike the supermarkets who happily support dangerous binge drinking in pursuit of billions in profits Support your local pub because it will always support you Charitable events promote pubs as safe and working with the community More should be done to stop local and village pubs from being lumped in to the same bracket as those that encourage binge drinking The Pub should be seen as somewhere where good things happen By the press taking up stories of the worth of community pubs to the community - we have customers who would lead very lonely lives if the pub wasn't here The local rural pub is the hub of the community, it is a lifeline for many country dwellers, it is a place of salvation where friend meets friend, a place of communication with others, a place were problems are solved I took over in 2002 and to date have raised over 545,000 for charity I think it is great to help your customers and the local people. To let them have the use of you club / pub to help all good causes, it s why this is the place to be for any occasion and is still open today Media should highlight what good work pubs do for both local and national charities Pubs are a part of the community and a life line for many people, it s their social network The community spirit is dying in many areas and we try and do events and days out for all ages to enjoy and socialise Change your hearts or you will loose your inns and you will deserve to have lost them but when you have lost your inns, drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England." Hilaire Belloc I came across this poem and I think it sums everything up

Survey Conclusions There is no doubt that the Pub Aid Questionnaire has provided a number of compelling reasons as to why charitable activities have such an important place within the role of the Great British Pub An increasingly large number of pubs (up to 91% - from the current 77% - over the course of 2011) will be providing some kind of charitable activity over the year The approx 101 million per year potentially raised by the Great British Pub offers a hugely positive story in the face of continued media pressure over binge drinking and alcohol related violence The sense of community that the pub provides and the focus that charitable activities provide to this are sense as hugely important by many licensees All kinds of events are now being offered to provide support from sports events to live music to quiz nights and food Supporting local charities are seen as just as important as more media friendly organisations such as Help for Heroes - helping to cement further the role of the pub as the hub of the local community
