1 Lesson 1: Model Story Mapping Subject English, Language Arts Grade: 1 to 2 Description The teacher uses modeling to introduce the Story Mapping strategy. Pupils listen while the teacher reads a story; identifies the setting, characters and events; draws a picture to illustrate the main events; and retells the story. Objectives Upon completion of this lesson, pupils will be able to: Identify the characters in the story Place the events in order to show what Jibrin saw every day Verbally retell the story by drawing a Story Map Visually represent a retelling of the story by making a Story Map Key Words Story Map, Jibrin, cow, goat, rooster, brown, white, red Materials Jibrin, Jibrin, story (an adapted version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, by Eric Carle) Set of Cards: Jibrin, Brown Cow, White Goat, Red Rooster Story Mapping Chart chart paper, old calendar, card, large piece of paper or chalkboard to draw Story Map colored pencils, markers or crayons twine line with pegs or pins to display the Story Map Lesson Plan 1. Say I am going to read a story to you. While I am reading, I am going to think aloud to show you how good readers think. Today, I will show you a Story Map. 2. Display the Story Mapping Chart. Story Mapping I use information in the story to make a picture. Where does the story take place? Who is in story? What happens in the story? 5
2 3. Read aloud the chart. Say Story Mapping is when information in the story is used to make a picture of the events of the story. This includes information about where the story takes place, who is in the story and what happens in the story. 4. Display the Phrases for Story Map Chart. 5. Read aloud the Phrases for Story Map Chart. 6. Explain to pupils these are special phrases used to let the reader and listener know the order of events in a story or what happens first, what happens next, what happens after that to the end of the story. Phrases for Story Map When I read this, I see that First, Second, Next, After that, Finally, 7. Say we are going to develop a Story Map by reading a story, thinking aloud and drawing pictures of the setting, characters and action. 8. Say the story that I am going to read aloud is Jibrin, Jibrin... What do you see? Adapted version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, By Eric Carle. 9. Ask are you comfortable? 10. Say Ready! Listen while I read. (Read the story). 6
3 Jibrin, Jibrin, I see a brown cow looking at me. Brown Cow, Brown Cow, I see a white goat looking at me. White Goat, White Goat, I see a red rooster looking at me. Red Roster, Red Rooster, I see pupils looking at me. 7
4 Pupils, Pupils, We see Jibrin Brown Cow White Goat Red Rooster and a Teacher Looking at us. That s what we see. 11. Say Now, I am going to ask some questions and make some notes of your responses on the chalkboard. 12. Ask the following questions and write short answers on the chalkboard. Question Where did the story start? Who are the characters in the story? What places did the characters visit? What happened first? What happened next? What happened after that? What happened next? What happened last? Answer Somewhere outside. Jibrin, Brown Cow, White Goat, Red Rooster, Pupils, Teacher outside, school Jibrin saw Brown Cow Brown Cow saw White Goat White Goat saw Red Rooster Red Rooster saw pupils. Pupils saw Jibrin, Brown Cow, White Goat, Red Rooster and Teacher 8
5 13. Display Story Mapping Chart or make on the chalkboard. 14. Say I will write the title of the story and the name of the author. 9
6 15. Say now I will draw a direction indicator with North, South, East and West in the right corner of the Story Map. 16. Say I will draw the major points and places where events took place. These places include a field, path, school, classroom 10
7 17. Say now : I will draw Jibrin in the class. Then, I will draw Brown Cow in the field. Then, I will draw White Goat by the road. After that, I will draw Red Rooster near White Goat Then I will Teacher Finally I will draw all the pupils looking at Teacher. 18. Say Now I will label the important places and things. 11
8 19. Say Now, I will add some color. 20. Say this is my Story Map of Jibrin, Jibrin, 21. Display Story Map so all pupils can see it. 22. Invite 3 pupils to come to the front to tell the story using the Story Map. The first pupil can tell about the beginning; the second pupil can tell about the middle part of the story; and the third pupil can tell about the ending of the story. 12
9 23. Copy and cut the pictures below. Jibrin Brown Cow White Goat Red Rooster 24. Give the pictures to a pupil and ask the pupil to put the pictures in the same order as in the Story Map. 25. Invite another pupil to retell the story. 26. Ask pupils to complete the Story Map Checklist. 13
