3 In January 2009, a US Airways flight with 155 people on board struck a flock of large birds during its initial climb out from New York City s La Guardia Airport. Having lost power in both engines and unable to restart them, Captain Chesley Sully Sullenberger guided the Airbus A320 airliner to a wheels-up landing on the Hudson River. It was Sully s piloting skills that led to a successful ditching -- the aircraft remained structurally intact and all passengers and crew were safe. How was Captain Sullenberger able to accomplish such an extraordinary feat? Surely, he wasn t made to fly through flocks of birds or land in water during practice sessions. What helped Sully manoeuvre the flight to safety were the many hours he had put into simulator training -- a realistic training environment where he could practice overcoming these challenges without any actual risk to life or property. 5 Learning decision-making through simulations Our Executive Education programs offer an engaged-learning environment in which the classroom is transformed into a hard-core decision-making laboratory. Sophisticated computer software simulates the real world of business and enables participants to practice decisionmaking in a safe environment and learn from the risks taken and mistakes made. Students discuss strategies, assess risks, analyse problem areas, evaluate alternatives and practice the art of decision-making. SIMULATIONS ON LOGISTICS & OPERATIONS This simulation is focused on the supply chain and operations of a company that connects everything from the factory, the distributor and the wholesaler, to the retailer who would then interface with the customer. It challenges the user to think along the lines of inventory and channels of distribution, taking oscillating demands into consideration. SIMULATIONS ON MARKETING These simulations help create effective marketing strategies, with an aim of auditing market performance and evaluating customers and product portfolios. It is based on the competitive analysis done via understanding customer perceptions, their preferences and buying intentions. Furthermore, it engages the user to research the effectiveness of both online and offline modes of advertising, promotions, marketing channels and the sales force. SIMULATIONS ON FINANCE This team-based simulation emphasises the core principles of Project Management valuation, M&A strategy and negotiation. Users form teams to settle reservation prices, value targets and negotiate over deal terms that will lead them to decide if they will accept (or reject) final offers.
