Our hospital is the only pediatric specialty hospital in the state of Hawai i and the Pacific Region. Our internship offers students the opportunity to participate, plan and implement developmentally appropriate social emotional care for infants, children, teens/young adults, and their families under the supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist. This is a fulltime training that is offered twice a year between August/September to December and January/February to May. All applicants must meet the Child Life requirements which can be found on the Child Life Council s website (childlife.org). All complete applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview via: phone, video conferencing or in person. 2 KMCWC Child Life Internship Packet & Application Page 2 of 5 Kapi olani Medical Center for Women & Children s Pediatric Support & Child Life Services Internship program is a comprehensive week educational experience designed to prepare a student for the Child Life profession. Students will complete a minimum of 480 hours (40 hours/week) and work some evening and weekend hours. Internship Objectives: Internship objectives are based on the Child Life competencies as defined by the Child Life Council. The internship will focus on developing skills in the following areas: 1. Lifespan Development 2. Assessment of developmental and psychosocial vulnerabilities 3. Communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff 4. Therapeutic play 5. Coping with hospitalization 6. Preparation and support for medical experiences 7. Documentation in medical record 8. Patient and family-centered care 9. Palliative care and bereavement support/services 10. Professional development and administration Program Features: Kapi olani Medical Center for Women & Children s Pediatric Support & Child Life Services program offers experiences with: 1. General medical-surgical population 2. Oncology/Hematology population 3. Adolescents 4. Intensive care pediatric patients 5. Ambulatory population 6. Music Therapy 7. Pet Therapy 8. Educational Support Services for patients 9. Integrated Services for patients (Healing Touch, Reiki, Aroma Therapy) Interns will have the opportunity to shadow Certified Child Life Specialists as well as have opportunities to work independently. Intern progress/evaluation will be completed through periodic self-evaluations, weekly meetings with direct supervisor, and formal evaluations at the midterm and upon completion of the internship.

All required materials must be submitted together in a single packet. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. It is your responsibility to ensure that all materials are received on time. Completed Common Child Life Internship Application (photograph optional) CV or Resume (please include hobbies, personal interests and skills) A minimum of three letters of recommendation Official transcripts of completed coursework. Please include undergraduate and graduate work, if applicable. A copy of your completed coursework review from the Child Life Council. Please see for more information. 4 KMCWC Child Life Internship Packet & Application Page 4 of 5 To be completed before the internship begins: It is the student s responsibility to comply with Hawaii Pacific Health s health clearance and orientation requirements. Students must be in good health before beginning an internship and provide documentation of the following: 1. A negative two-step tuberculosis skin test within nine months prior to date of initial clinical experience 2. Clinical record showing immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Hepatitis B 3. Clinical record of receiving these vaccines a. Flu Shot (Most current vaccine available in past 12 months) b. Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Adult booster must have been received no earlier than Please contact Human Resources, Workforce Planning to initiate the following: 1. Health clearance process 2. Non-Employee Orientation appointment 3. Documentation of valid American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) certification for adults, children, and infants 4. Documentation of your health insurance 5. Determination whether an affiliation agreement is required 6. A page will come up that states Step 1 and Step 2. Under Step 1 click on student (non-physicians). Under Step 2 click on no association/association not listed then click learn more. The professional liability (student) page will come up. Click on the forms and links tab then on the insurance applications and brochure link, student (all states). Print out the application. Look for the other section on the application. Check the box and write in Child Life Specialist. Send the application and a copy of the internship curriculum to them. Please keep in mind that it may take 2-4 weeks for your application to be processed. Housing and Transportation during Internship: Kapi olani Medical Center for Women & Children does not provide housing, transportation or parking. Students will need to make their own arrangements prior to the start of their internship.
