Industrial Aluminium Towers STAIR LADDER ASSEMBLY GUIDE TO BS-EN FOR PLATFORM WORKING HEIGHTS 2.4m, 4.4m, 6.4m, 8.4m, 10.4m & 12.4m 2 RUNG FRAME (2008) D/W TOEBOARD (2066) 1.8m BRACE (SHORT) (2040) MAIN FRAME 4 RUNG (2002) STAIR TRAP PLATFORM 1.8m (2049) 1.8m PLATFORM (2043) 2.7m BRACE (LONG) (2041) BASE FRAME 5 RUNG (2001) STAIR LADDER UNIT (2205) STABILISERS (2056) or (2057) ADJUSTABLE LEGS (2240) 150mm CASTORS (2238) Lakeside Industries Ltd Unit 19 Howard Road Redditch Worcestershire B98 7SE Distributed by:-
STEP 1: First, assemble the wheels to the adjustable legs. Then install the assembled wheels into the first Base Frame (5 Rung Frame). Ensure that the pin on adjustable collar is fully engaged into the hole at the base of each leg. Apply the foot brake to each wheel. Each frame has a conical headfitting on the top of it. These always point inwards towards the centre of the tower on all levels. When another frame is added on top, it will temporarily tip forwards. This is normal and completely safe. The frames then become locked together once bracing is installed. STEP 2: Repeat step 1 on the 2nd base frame. Join the frames together using 2x 1.8m braces (short). Make sure the braces hook onto the uprights and not the bottom rung. The braces are to be installed from the inside, pointing outwards. Ensure the brace is fitted to the lowest part of the frame uprights. Now level the tower in all directions using a spirit level. A temporary platform can also be placed on the bottom rung to help square up the tower. STEP 3: Next, fit a ladder unit from the bottom rung of the one frame to the top rung of the opposite frame on one side of the tower. Then, install a 2.7m brace (long) diagonally in the opposite direction on the other side of the tower - as close to the uprights as possible. Take 4x 1.8m braces and fix them onto the rungs either side of the ladder as temporary guardrailing - located on rungs 4 & 5. STEP 4: Assemble the stabilisers to each corner of the tower. First, secure the short arm to the upright of the frame at the lowest possible point. Then, whilst the foot is firmly positioned on the floor, secure the upper arm to the frame upright. The stabilisers have variable geometry so the foot can be adjusted in & out to suit the ground conditions by adjusting the angle of the 2 arms. Always assemble the stabilisers in the furthest distance possible away from the tower in a 45 O angle to the tower frames & braces. Page 2
STEP 5: Working from the guardrailed stairs and ensuring the horizontal bracing is at waist height, install a 2 rung frame on each end of the tower - ensure the conical headfittings are pointed toward the middle of the tower. Install 2x 2.7m braces parallel to the ladder unit as bannister rails on the 1st & 2nd rungs above the ladder unit. The 2x temporary 1.8m braces on the outside edge of the ladder unit can now be removed. STEP 6: Still working completely from the stairs, install a platform onto the 5th rung. Now remove the other 2 temporary 1.8m braces running down the centre of the tower. These can be relocated above - with a further 2x 1.8m braces - as guardrails for the platform. 2 Are installed through the centre of the tower and 2 on the furthest side of the tower, as shown. Install the braces in the middle of the screws located on the rungs -both in the centre of the frame and on the edge of the frame. STEP 7: Working off the guardrailed platform, install 2x 4 rung frames onto the top of the tower in the same way as before. Next, install a 2.7m brace diagonally from the rung the working platform is on up to the 4th rung above on the opposite frame. This will be located tight up against the frame uprights. In the opposite direction, place a stair ladder unit. STEP 8: Still standing on the platform, clip on 2 more 2.7m braces as banister rails for the stair ladder unit. Now install a 2nd working platform 3 rungs down from the top, directly above the current platform. Page 3
STEP 9: Move onto the newly installed stair ladder unit and install a further 4x 1.8m braces as guardrails, as previously installed in step 6. Always ensure that the platform is used as a waist-height guardrail whilst the 1.8m braces are being installed. Do not progress any further up the stairs until these have been adequately fixed. Now repeat steps 7, 8 and 9 until you reach the correct working platform height. STEP 10: On reaching the correct platform height and working from the ladder, install the trapdoor platform along side the plain platform such, that it hinges outwards to the side of the tower. Still working from the ladder through the new trap platform, relocate the 2 centre 1.8m braces onto the outside face of the tower. STEP 11: Finally, install the folding toeboard unit around the entire top working platform. The tower is now complete and a scaff tag can be fixed on. It is now ready for use. GENERAL NOTES: Before any assembly, a visual safety inspection must be undertaken of all components required in this construction. Ensure all wind latches on every platform are engaged as they are installed. Ensure all stabilisers are appropriately positioned and fully grounded to form the largest possible floor area of the tower. Check that all brakes are in a fully locked position Ensure that all spring loaded pins on the braces and ladders are fully engaged around the rung Page 4

When friction devices are used the connection to the scaffold must be made onto both vertical uprights. Ties should be at no more than 4m intervals. Beware of high winds: If high winds are forecast do not erect the tower or leave up overnight. When working on towers outdoors for long periods always listen to weather forecasts at night. Wind- Beaufort Speed in Speed in Description Beaufort-Scale No. in mph m/sec Medium Breeze Raises dust and loose paper Safe to work on the tower. small branches sway Strong Breeze Large branches in motion, Tie the tower onto a solid telegraph wires whistle Structure. Do not work on tower Gale Force Twigs snap off, walking is Towers should on no account difficult be erected in these conditions. Beware of open ended building which can cause a funnelling effect. SAFETY NOTES 1. Before erecting check ground is level unobstructed and is suitable for the purpose. Also ensure area is clear of overhead obstructions, particularly power cables. 2. Check that brakes are applied and the tower is stable before use. 3. Do not ride on the tower or attempt to move a loaded tower. 4. Always climb the tower from the inside. 5. Do not overload the tower. Maximum platform loads 200 kg/m2 (2kN/m2). Maximum tower load 2500kg mobile. Maximum horizontal force at platform 30kg. 6. When moving a tower, reduce the height to a maximum of 4m. Check that there are no power lines or other obstructions overhead. 7. Mobile towers must be moved by pushing at the base only. Beware of soft or uneven ground, drains or potholes and overhead obstructions, especially power cables. Stabilisers may be raised to a maximum of 25mm above the ground. Immediately after moving, apply the brakes and check that the tower is upright and stable and stabilisers returned to ground level. 8. Never remove components from a tower whilst it is erected. Dismantling must always be performed from the top. Failure to observe this rule will seriously reduce the strength and safety of the tower. 9. Do not use damaged components. Check all components before use and periodically lubricate all moving parts and wipe off surplus oil. 10. Beware of high winds. Secure the tower when in exposed positions and when left unattended. 11. Do not lean ladders against towers or use ladders on top of platforms. 12. At heights where components cannot be passed up or down by hand, a rope should be used for securing to components to aid safe raising and lowering. 13. Legislation now calls for inspection and recording of assembled towers. See HSE guidance note 10 (revision 4) for further details. CONSTRUCTION NOTES 1. Follow the erection manual to ensure that the correct erection procedure is used. 2. Ensure that sufficient equipment is available to construct the tower and is in working order. 3. Do not extend castor jacks more than is necessary to level the tower. Adjustable swivel base jacks are available for use on stepped, steeply sloped or soft ground conditions. 4. Use a Spirit level to check that the tower is upright. 5. The peg on the head fitting must always point inwards. 6. Fit the first two horizontal braces to the vertical frame tube. This prevents the frame from falling over during erection and dismantling. Locate all other horizontal braces over the location pegs. 7. All diagonal braces are fitted as close as possible to the upright. 8. Observe all height limits and fit stabilisers (a) to increase the safe working height to the tower. Towers may also tied to a suitable rigid structure using standard scaffolding tubes and fittings (see tying in). 9. Fit toeboards to all working platforms and ensure that all platforms are adequately guarded. 10. The dismantling sequence is the reverse order of the erection process. 11. For special or unusual applications contact your supplier for further technical data sheets and expert advice. Page 4
