3 Welcome to the Professional Development for Educators Catalog, featuring programs and courses offered by Cardinal Stritch University through the Office of Professional Development and Licensure in the College of Education and Leadership. CHANGE continues to be the word of the day for education in Wisconsin and Cardinal Stritch University continues to adapt to those changes in an effort to address the needs of our colleagues throughout the state. Those of you familiar with our Educators Catalog will notice some changes to this year s layout. Courses are now listed by curricular area making it easier for you to locate the specific educational topic you are interested in studying. To register for the courses in this catalog, please follow the registration directions on page 2, unless otherwise directed within the course description. If you are unable to find the topic you are looking for, or if you have questions about registration, do not hesitate to contact us. We offer a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the professional development of educators by providing access to graduate-level professional development opportunities through a variety of formats including video and online courses offered by partner vendors as well as face-to-face courses facilitated by Cardinal Stritch University faculty. All courses offered are approved for Cardinal Stritch University graduate credit and are applicable for Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) license renewal. Customized training for your school or district The College of Education and Leadership has established the Academy of Teaching Excellence. The purpose of the Academy is to assist school districts and organizations with meeting their professional development needs by providing direct access to the knowledge, expertise, and research of the faculty and staff of the College of Education and Leadership. 4 Registration Procedures - How to Register To register for any of the courses listed in this catalog, unless otherwise directed within the course description, please contact the Professional Development and Licensure Department for more information. Each course description includes the amount of credits, the partnering company (if applicable), the location of the course and the cost of the course. Tuition Fees and Discounts The cost of each course is listed at the end of the course description and will vary depending on the partnering organization that offers the course, as well as the number of credits the course is worth. Group rates and tuition discounts are often available. Please inquire about a list of available discounts at the time of your registration. 5 The Academy of Teaching Excellence - College of Education and Leadership has established the Academy of Teaching Excellence. The purpose of the Academy is to assist school districts and organizations with meeting their professional development needs by providing direct access to the knowledge, expertise, and research of the faculty and staff of the College of Education and Leadership. Online Educator DPI Endorsement Courses - In April of 2009 the governor signed into law a bill that requires that teachers in Wisconsin, teaching online after July 1, 2010, must be certified in their area of instruction and must have completed 30 hours of professional development specifically preparing them to teach online. Earn the Online Endorsement - Required to Teach K-12 Students Online! Wisconsin educators teaching K-12 students online must complete 30 hours of professional development designed to prepare them to teach online. Cardinal Stritch University has prepared the necessary courses to address the requirements of the DPI endorsement as an online instructor. To register and earn a Cardinal Stritch University online teaching endorsement: Students must receive department/instructor approval prior to registering Students must successfully complete both one credit courses, in order (CEDO 501, then CED 502), to receive the Online Educator Endorsement. The workshops are currently priced at $250 each and run for 3-weeks each. 6 Online Educator DPI Endorsement Courses, continued - Succeeding in Online Learning, CEDO 501 Optional This course focuses on current computer and web-based tools and the development of skills needed to succeed in online learning. Even experienced computer users may not be aware of some of the new collaborative tools used in online learning. The intent of this course is to provide a common skill set and knowledge base for all members of the cohort. Location: Facilitated Online. Cost: $250. Prerequisites: Department approval Computer capable of Internet and applications (Including online word processing, video & voice) Spring Schedule February 7, 14, 21, 2013 Students will meet synchronously with the instructor from 5 6 p.m. on each scheduled meeting date. Teaching and Learning Online, CED 502 Optional This course will help you gain first-hand experience as an online-learner. Location: Facilitated Online. Cost: $250. You will: Experience the online learning environment from a student perspective, Explore available tools and software, Learn to plan, design and incorporate appropriate active and engaging instructional strategies and valid and reliable assessments, Learn and apply concepts and techniques that make us effective online facilitators and learners, Discuss how to model and encourage legal, ethical, safe and healthy online behavior, and Explore how the needs of special needs students can be addressed online. Prerequisites: Students should have access to personal computers with audio/video capabilities, their own or organizational. Access includes the ability to open and examine interior components. 7 Assessment - Assessment and Intervention for Struggling Readers, Grades K-6, CEDUC 626 This course helps teachers to better understand students who struggle with reading and gives them the tools to improve their students fluency and comprehension in order to meet grade-level standards. You will define and describe the characteristics of a struggling reader, identify a particular student who fits that description, examine that student s needs, and implement research-based instructional strategies to improve fluency and comprehension in struggling readers. Assessment: Designing Performance Assessments, CEDUC 535 This course makes connections between student motivation and types of assessment used in the classroom. It also covers how to unpack learning standards and benchmarks, so that all assessment yields information about student progress and mastery of instructional goals. Performance assessment can be designed in a multitude of ways, in which both students and teachers can work together to determine the best product or performance to exemplify student understanding, knowledge, and ability to use what they ve learned. Classroom Assessment for Today s Teacher K - 12, CEDUC 635 This course focuses on three important areas of assessment: grading, authentic assessment techniques, and Response to Intervention (RTI). While studying each of these areas of assessment, participants will identify common problems and obstacles classroom teachers face in each of these categories, and subsequent ways to address or overcome these issues. Formative Assessment: The Basics, CEDUC 570 This course gets at the heart of formative assessment, beyond the basics. The course begins with a lesson about understanding. What are we looking for when we say that we want students to understand a concept? You will be introduced to the idea of habits of mind; survey 16 distinct ways of seeing, understanding, and interacting with the world; and learn instructional strategies to help your students develop each of these thinking and learning habits. The Brain: Memory and Learning Strategies, CEDUC 564 In The Brain: Memory and Learning Strategies, you will learn about the physical structures of the human brain that create and retain memories and how to use this information to improve your classroom teaching practice. The Thinking and Learning Brain, CEDUC 646 This course focuses on the latest research in the domains of neuroscience and cognitive psychology. Participants examine the classroom implications of understanding how the brain learns. Key topics of each domain are explored, such as memory, cognition, language development, gender differences, and the emotional aspects of learning. Participants apply brain-compatible strategies to improve student achievement, to increase student motivation and engagement, and to create a supportive learning environment.
