1 Unit Plan Course: Dairy/Livestock Production Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Teacher: Katherine House Unit Title: The Dairy Industry Course Description: In this course, the students will learn about the animal science industry which will include trends of past and present within the industry itself. The anatomy of animals will be covered, as well as details about the specific animal production industries which will include poultry, beef cattle, swine, sheep and goats, and dairy cattle. The students will also learn the aligning career development events with each topic. General Learning Target Time Frame Formative Assessment Summative Assessment Weights Participation- 15% Projects- 15% Exit Slips- 5% Mid-Unit Test- 25% End of Unit Test- 40% Unit 3. Dairy Production Compare and contrast the breeds of dairy cattle and evaluate how they may affect the industry. Identify the different components and operations of dairy production which include the processes involved with calving, breeding, management of cattle, and milk production. Analyze the different nutritional needs of cattle throughout the stages of development At the completion of the unit plan, the students will be able to application of knowledge on a written exam and practical with up to 80% accuracy. 4 Weeks (16 class periods) Dairy Breed Project Mid Unit Test Daily Exit Slips o Three facts that the student learned for the day and how this relates to the industry Written mid-unit test End of Unit Test
2 Title of Course: Dairy/Livestock Production Level: 10 th, 11 th, 12 th Teacher: Katherine House Unit Title: The Dairy Industry Aligned Standards: Lesson Title: Breeds of Dairy Cattle Time Required: 2 Class periods (80 minutes) Instructional Performance Objectives Overall Objective: The students will be able to identify and analyze the differences between the swine breeds on a test with up to 85% accuracy. Enabling Objectives: Select a breed and research information pertaining to that breed. Identify specific traits of their breed which may be different from other breeds. Explain why certain traits may be more desirable than other traits. NY Standards: FFA Activity: Equipment/Materials/Resources Needed: - Graphs for Breeds - Computers
3 Content Teaching Tips/Strategies Set Induction: Review: There will be no review as this is the start of the unit. Overall Objective: See Cover Sheet Enabling Objectives: See Cover Sheet **write objectives on board** 1. Write the following dairy breeds on pieces of paper and allow students to select their breed. There will be 5 groups of two and one group of one. a. Holstein b. Jersey c. Brown Swiss d. Ayrshire e. Guernsey f. Milking Shorthorn 2. Instruct students to work in their pairs to create a poster which includes characteristics of each breed as well as a picture. a. While one student is creating a poster, the other can do a write up about the breed. b. For the one person working alone, they may choose one portion or the other. 3. Once the students have completed their projects, they will present them to the class, which will take it down on a graphic organizer. 4. At completion of this project, the students will be quizzed on pictures used to identify the given breeds.

Enabling Objectives: Identify given terms within the unit. Work with a partner to match up correct vocabulary word with their definitions. NY Standards: FFA Activity: Equipment/Materials/Resources Needed: - Copies of flashcards - Textbook

Parlor System l. DHIA m. Somatic Cell n. Cooperatives o. CWT 2. Have students look up definitions in Animal Science Biology and Technology textbook which is mainly used for this class. a. When the students find the definitions, they may write them on the flashcards provided.

Review and discuss major areas of milk production in the United States. a. Determine the five leading milk-producing states in the U.S. Ask students to guess one of the states before reading the answers. i. Wisconsin ii. California iii. New York iv. Minnesota v. Pennsylvania b. Discuss why they are the highest producing states. i. These states produce more forage for proper feeding than other states. ii. They also have high concentrations of population in large cities located in these states. 2. Have students complete the Introduction to Dairy Industry Activity. a. Discuss the previous activity with the students and then follow up by saying that these are not the only costs and markets to the dairy industry. 3. Ask the students what the different functions are that are involved with a dairy operation. a. Calves b. Dry Cows c. Lactating Cow d. Heifers e. Steers f. Why bulls are not on this list.
10 4. Have students brainstorm managing that must be done with each category and costs that may be associated with each category. 5. During the following class periods have the students work in groups of three to research management techniques for calves, dry cows, lactating cows, and heifers.
