2 MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER On behalf of the pupils, staff and Governors I am delighted to welcome both you and your child to Colham Manor Primary School. Our priority is to ensure that children reach the highest standards possible and children s learning is thoroughly tracked and regularly reviewed. We also place a high emphasis on developing independence, confidence and co-operation, so that our children are ready for the next step in their lives. At Colham Manor we aim to provide a happy, caring, safe and secure environment where all children reach their potential. It is a school where standards continue to rise and OfSTED have recently praised the caring nature of our staff and the pupil s behaviour, amongst many other things. We aim to provide a wide range of learning experiences in order to stimulate the children s interest and imagination, using a range of technology to fully extend pupils of all abilities. I hope that this prospectus provides you with a range of information about the school, its organisation and aims. OUR ETHOS IS: IMPROVING LIFE CHANCES We feel that this captures all that is important in the school experience of our children. We expect all members of the school community to abide by our Golden Rules and treat each other with care and respect. Our school is spaced over a large site, with extensive grounds. It has recently undergone significant redevelopment to cater for our increasing numbers. We are very proud of our new library and new dining room / studio. There is mixture of provision both indoors and out with a number of specifically designed outdoor learning areas to interest and engage our children. We have extensive sports fields that are regularly used by many of our after school sports clubs. You will find our classrooms equipped with the latest technology. We also have a bespoke ICT suite and additional laptops that can be moved from class to class. Our investment in technology ensures that our pupils are prepared for the modern world. Our playgrounds have a range of climbing / play equipment and a range of specifically designed areas, including a low level climbing wall with safety surface. Our intention is that our children are able to enjoy their play as much as their work.
3 THE CURRICULUM Early Years Foundation Stage The Early Years Foundation Stage (the Nursery and Reception classes) makes a crucial contribution to children s early development and learning. It is here, in a safe, stimulating and enjoyable learning environment, that children develop important learning skills. Children s learning is planned through a balance of engaging, practical experiences, focused teaching sessions, structured play and child initiated play which is supported by a rich choice of toys, equipment and materials. Our aim is to inspire children to gain a curiosity about the world around them, develop and practice new skills and be motivated to try new activities whilst learning to work and co-operate with others. Learning takes place both indoors and in the specially equipped outdoor areas to which the children have daily access. Key Stages 1 and 2 Our school provides a balanced and broad curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the pupils in our school. We aim to ensure that pupils at our school are given the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences to equip them for adult life. All children will study the subjects of the National Curriculum. The core subjects are English, Mathematics and Science. Within each key stage there is a daily maths and literacy lesson. Literacy learning comprises of speaking and listening, reading, writing and phonics and spelling. The foundation subjects are History, Geography, Design Technology, Information Technology, Art, Music, PHSCE, Modern Foreign Language (French) and Physical Education. In RE we follow the Hillingdon agreed syllabus. This covers various features of major world religions with the focus being acceptance and tolerance. We hope to widen pupils understanding of the world around them and build a sense of respect. Children s achievements and successes are celebrated through class and school assemblies, curriculum weeks and open mornings for parents and friends. We encourage children to become independent and confident in both their work and social development. Beyond the Curriculum We have a hugely popular breakfast club that is run by school staff. For a small charge, parents can leave their children in a safe environment where they can enjoy a healthy breakfast, play games and chat with friends. Our after school and holiday clubs are currently run by an outside provider. Children have the opportunity to enjoy specific themed weeks, indoor and outdoor games, complete homework and enjoy a healthy snack. For more information contact the school office. We offer a wide range of clubs both at lunchtime and after school. These allow our children opportunities to experience new activities or participate in their hobbies. As well as learning new skills, our clubs allow our children to develop their self esteem, confidence and build friendships. Our clubs are run by a mixture of school staff and outside providers.
4 INCLUSION Colham Manor is an inclusive primary school. We are proud of how we value and support all our children. We expect all our children to reach their full potential and support their individual needs to ensure they can reach the highest standards they are capable of. Teachers plan lessons to ensure all children make progress in class, taking into account their ability level and individual needs. Some of our children have specific needs that need extra support additional to what can be provided in the classroom. These children are usually identified as having Special Educational Needs, English as an Additional Language or are Able, Gifted and Talented. For these children we provide specific support programmes, delivered by trained staff in the Launch Pad, a specially resourced provision for children with additional needs.
5 THE COLHAM MANOR COMMUNITY The Role of Parents We encourage a close partnership between parents and school. In Nursery and Reception an induction meeting is held so that parents and pupils feel confident about entering the school. In September we provide an opportunity to meet with parents to discuss expectations for each year group. Parents receive regular newsletters about what is happening in school and there are also open mornings to give parents / carers the opportunity to see education in action. Parent Consultation Evenings are held during the school year for more formal contact between parents and teachers to discuss the children s progress. We have a number of Parents / Carers, Grandparents who currently work as volunteers in school. If you feel you have something to offer you would be more than welcome. Please speak to a member of the school office who will take the necessary information. Reading Champions are parents who support readers in Key Stage 1 on a one to one basis. Colham Manor Children s Centre The Children s Centre aims to give children from birth to five years the best possible start in life and enable parents to support their child and family. The Centre offers a relaxed, welcoming and enjoyable environment where local families can access a range of services, activities, information and guidance. We offer a range of services and groups including parent support, speech and language support, baby massage, baby group, stay and play sessions, dads group, midwifery service, housing advice, and Citizens Advice appointments. The Children s Centre is the yellow building located to the left of the main school entrance. For further information or a copy of the Children s Centre monthly programme you can contact the Children s Centre on or drop in to the Centre and speak to a member of the team.
6 ADMISSIONS If you wish for your child to attend our Nursery, you need to contact the school and place your child s name on the waiting list. Nursery places are allocated on the following criteria in the order stated: Children in Public care Medical or psychological condition of child Medical or psychological condition of member of immediate family Sibling connection Distance to school Applications to start Reception or for In Year Admissions are to be made directly to the LA either by paper application, online or by phone to the Contact Centre on Offers are made from the Admissions Department to the parent.
