1 Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority TRANSPARENCY OVERVIEW SHEET What is this skill? To be transparent means that your words and your actions are an honest reflection of what you believe. Transparency is about being trustworthy and conscientious. Knowing how to take responsibility for your actions, keeping your promises, and being accountable for what you say and do are all parts of this skill. Transparency is a difficult skill to master because it requires constant attention even the littlest details matter. Transparency boils down to your credibility people trust you, know that you say what you mean, and believe you when you say you will do something. EI Competencies (Note: The italicized competencies complement this skill) Self-Awareness Social Awareness Emotional Self-Awareness Empathy Accurate Self-Assessment Organizational Awareness Self-Confidence Service Self-Management Emotional Self-Control Transparency Adaptability Achievement Initiative Optimism Relationship Management Inspirational Leadership Influence Developing Others Change Catalyst Conflict Management Building Bonds Teamwork and Collaboration To be successful with this program you need the following: Worksheets: Transparency Defined Materials: Flipchart and markers TV/VCR Tape of episode or partial episode of selected show To be successful with this program you need to prepare in advance: Choose a TV. show to watch as a group. Be sure to select a show that has a character or two demonstrating behaviors that are reflective of transparency. You want to find minutes of viewing time where you have obvious examples of transparency, and perhaps the opposite types of behaviors. Reality programs may be a great place to start because you see a few examples of what s desired and many examples of what shouldn t be done. Be sure you watch the segment a few times before you use it so that you are comfortable with the content and flow.

2 Facilitation Tip: Be sure to introduce the show and its characters to participants so they know what they re watching. Select at least two points in the segment to stop the tape and decide ahead of time which of the discussion questions you ll ask. Make sure to leave 5 minutes at the end of the discussion time so that you can ask the final question for discussion. Estimated Length of Time for this Module: 45 minutes

3 Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority TRANSPARENCY MODULE GUIDE Introduction 5 minutes How many of you have known or had a relationship that fell apart because of a lie that was told? How many of you have been hurt by someone who said they would do something, and they didn t? Ask participants to raise their hands if it was because trust was lost. Ask participants to raise their hands if it was because someone failed to keep a promise. Our best relationships, on the other hand, are with people who we can count on, who make promises and keep them, who are thoughtful and conscientious, and who are consistent in what they say and do. For us to be one of these people, we must demonstrate transparency. Transparency Defined 5 minutes Transparency encompasses a set of behaviors that we might also associate with living a life of integrity. Ask members what they think it means to live your values get specific behaviors that demonstrate specific values. List these on a flipchart. Refer participants to the worksheet Transparency Defined. Review the definition of transparency. Knowing your values and living them Openly admitting your mistakes Being accountable for your behavior Confronting unethical behavior Being open to others about your own feelings and beliefs Encourage members to copy the ideas from the flipchart to the worksheet. For Your Viewing Pleasure 30 minutes In order to understand this skill set better, we re going to watch a program and do character analysis. I ve taped (fill in the blank with the name of the show or segment that you have) for us. A couple of times during this segment, I m going to stop the tape so that we can discuss what we ve seen. As you watch the show, think about examples of transparency that you see or examples that show the opposite of what we re looking for. Refer to the worksheet Transparency Defined as a reminder of what transparency means. Play the tape. Use selected questions from below to help participants think more deeply about this skill set.

4 Questions for Discussion Who saw an example of someone who demonstrated a skill of transparency? Be specific about what was done and how it was done. Was trust in a relationship demonstrated by someone? How? Were there any examples of trust broken? In what way did this happen? Did anyone take a stand for something they believed in? Explain when this happened. What was the impact on others? What role did promises or commitments play in what you saw? Who was a role model for integrity? In what way? Who admitted they made a mistake? What was the result of this admission? Who did something that was the exact opposite of transparency? What was done? How did it influence others? Be sure to ask this last question as a way to wrap up the discussion: How can we relate what we saw to our lives in the Sorority? Closure 5 minutes When we say, practice what you preach or walk the talk we re talking about transparency skills. A simple way to keep transparency at the forefront of our minds is to Do What You Say You Will Do. If each one of us practices that statement, then we will enhance our relationships, our own credibility, and our ability to work effectively in a group.
