To find out about the exam pathways To understand effective revision techniques for the Mathematics exam To understand how to effectively use the revision materials your child has access to through school To know how to help your child revise and how to get the best out of exam questions
Grade C+ Mathematics GCSE= Sixth form entry to AS and A2 courses College entrance requirement University / BTec entry Apprenticeships Employment Basic skills for life and good self esteem
All students will have the opportunity to have several qualifications in Mathematics All sets have already sat the Number and Measure Award in Year 9 All sets have already sat the Statistical Methods award in Year 10 Set 1 will be entered for the Algebra Award in May 2015 and Additional Maths students for Functional Skills Level 1 All students are entered for the GCSE
Previous exams had around 70-80% of the questions based on recall and knowledge of the content This new specification has 45-55% The rest of the exam is focussed on selecting and applying mathematics in a range of contexts and interpreting and analysing problems i.e. Problem solving On top of higher boundaries, this has made the exam more difficult for some students
Sets 1 and 2 Higher Tier Edexcel Linear 1MA01 Two papers of 1h 45 min Paper 1 only non-calculator on Thursday 26 th May AM Paper 2 on 9 th June AM Set 3 Foundation Tier IGCSE two 2 hour calculator papers: Paper 1 Thursday 26 th May AM Paper 2 9 th June AM All these GCSEs are recognised by Universities, Colleges and Employers as Mathematics GCSEs

A long period of time Ideally 3 or more months. 5 evenings a week You choose, but keep the same nights each week. Revise at the same time each evening. Only 20 minutes. BUT this does not include setting up.
Kitchen, if you have space Probably not your bedroom Dining room not many distractions
Reading Maths is largely ineffective. You must do Maths! Past Exam Papers Revision Workbooks MyMaths/ Maths Watch / Hegarty Maths... Check you know what topics will be tested in the exam Teach someone else. As a parent, be prepared to assume the role of the student.
Making connections Use as many of your 5 senses as you can. Strengthen the connections by repeated use.

But Remember: Repetition is the Key!
Help your child set up a revision timetable. Set up a space, and allow posters and memory cards around the house. Be the student and get them to explain methods and their working. Make sure you know when the exams are on and that students have all the correct equipment.

Helping your child with Maths Questions
Maths Literacy Reasons for focus Since 2012 there has been much more emphasis on answering functional style problems where students have to identify the maths they need to use. Basically the questions are more wordy!!
Feedback from June 2014 exam We found that even on basic questions, although the majority of students from sets equivalent to sets 1 and 2 gained marks, less than half of set 3 interpreted the question they did not see key words.
Even at Higher tier there was a drop in the success rate with this question as students did not see key words. Only 7 students in Set 1 gained full marks
All students had the mathematical ability to answer this question, yet at foundation tier only 23% gained marks. In our lowest set no student gained any marks. Overall at foundation tier 5/110 students gained full marks. At Higher tier there was also a marked dip with 63% gaining full marks in set 1 and 53% in set 2
At foundation tier - this was a calculator question, yet 20% of students failed to gain any marks. 85% of students gained less than half marks.
At Higher tier - this was a calculator question, all students had the skills to answer. Yet only 40% of students gained any marks.
Literacy issues are not anything new Ofsted report in May 2014, Students do not have regular opportunities to improve their reading and writing skills in all subjects. Boys, in particular, achieve less well than girls because of this. All subjects have been focussing on developing strategies for students to develop their literacy skills.
Literacy is every teacher s fight, no matter what subject we teach, even maths. Textbooks often have keywords and, sometimes, definitions. However, rarely will students learn vocabulary from just these; they need to work with the vocabulary. From Great Maths teaching ideas
Over the past two years we have been focussing on literacy and we have dedicated lessons to promote literacy. These can consist of a vocabulary activity a key strategy to answer functional multi-stage problems
We have also fought to ensure that highlighters are included in every exam pack so that lack of equipment in the exam is not a barrier. We want to encourage every student to use the highlighting strategy to enable them to break down the questions
A factory has 3 machines that make pieces of gutter of the same shape and size. Each machine makes 150 pieces of gutter each hour. The machines run from 9 am to 5 pm each day. The machines will need to be run on overtime at other times. The machines have to make pieces of guttering for an urgent order. The guttering is needed by 1pm on Thursday. The machines start on Monday at 9 am. For how many hours of overtime will each machine have to run so that the order is completed on time? ( 5 marks) Questions can look scary. If we read the whole question it can put you off attempting it

Sue buys 24 books for 2 each. She sells half the books for 4 each. She sells a quarter of the books for 3 each. She sells the remaining books at 2.50 each. Calculate Sue's profit.
Line 1 24 x 2 = 48 cost of buying Line 2 1/2 of 24 books = 12 books 12 x 4 = 48 Line 3 1/4 of 24 books = 6 books 6 x 3 = 18 Line 4 books remaining = = 6 6 x 2.50 = 15 Line 5 From selling = 81 Profit = = 33
Answer = 8 profit 4 marks
