Mass and on Sunday, May 16th, after all the Sunday Masses, St. Jude the Apostle Parish will honor the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame, as the Convent will be closing and they will be leaving St. Jude s this June. We hope you can join us as we say Thank You to our wonderful sisters for their many years of service to our Parish and School. 3 May 2, 2010 Page Three ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO May, 2010 Dear Friends in Christ, This month, we celebrate two significant events, one ancient, the other more recent in origin: the Feast of Pentecost and Mother s Day. On Mother s Day, we remember with gratitude those women who bring new life to the world and who are the hearts of our homes. On Pentecost, we recall and accept again the gift of the Holy Spirit into our hearts and to the whole world. At this time, I ask you to remember in your prayers and in your charity those who will benefit from Catholic Charities Mother s Day Appeal: the thousands of families and individuals throughout Cook and Lake counties who are suffering from the economic recession and who are turning to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, as to a loving mother, for hope and assistance. This is the only parish collection during the year for Catholic Charities. By working in partnership with numerous parishes and providing services that they cannot, Catholic Charities is able to assist more than a million of our neighbors in need each year. People of all faiths, families, children, seniors, the hungry and homeless, are helped through 159 different programs at 156 locations. Today, in addition to needing food, clothing, and utility assistance, thousands of families and individuals struggle to stay housed. Many parents, including low-income mothers who are heads of households, have lost their jobs and live in fear of losing their homes or apartments. Many grandparents have seen their retirement income and with it, their security diminish significantly. Simply remaining in the places they call home has become a major concern for lowincome families and elders. Catholic Charities has developed an array of safe and affordable housing programs that honor and respect human dignity and preserve the sacred bonds of family. More than 1,500 independent elders with limited incomes live in Catholic Charities 17 senior residences. The St. Leo Residence for Veterans houses formerly homeless veterans as they build new lives and careers; frail seniors in need of supportive housing are cared for in a pleasant community atmosphere; homeless parents and children live temporarily in Catholic Charities shelters; and a recovery program for women reunites mothers and children. Last year, the Lake County Family Self-Sufficiency Program assisted 678 low-income single parents and children with maintaining their housing, while they worked toward jobs, education, and stability for their families. These are just a few examples of Catholic Charities fidelity to Christ s Gospel mandate (Matthew 25:34-45) to love and care for our neighbors. I pray that the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, inspire you and your families on Mother s Day and always. 4 Page Four May 2, 2010 SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School Greetings From Your Parish School On Wednesday, April 21, the students in Grades 4-8 had the wonderful opportunity of attending a performance of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra at the Governors State University Performing Arts Center in Park Forest. The interactive, informational, orchestral production entitled Music for the Birds Youth Concert featured the sounds and feelings of birds through the works of composers Camille Saint-Saens, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, and John Williams. The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra has been named the 2010 Professional Orchestra of the Year. Congratulations to 5 th grade West Campus student, Oreoluwa Osineye, on being selected as the Illinois Level 1 Finalist for the 2010 Letter About Literature. This is a national reading and writing competition presented by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress in partnership with Target Stores. The contest was sponsored by the Illinois State Library and Jesse White, the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian. Recently the students participated in a $1 dress down day in honor of the Danielle C. Banks Foundation. This is a nonprofit organization that lends hope and support to children with life threatening medical conditions. Danielle C. Banks was a 2000 graduate of St. Jude the Apostle School. Two board members of the foundation visited our campuses to distribute orange ribbons to students and teachers in honor of Danielle s memory and her battle with leukemia. The foundation provides a mentorship program and promotes preventative measures through community service, scholarship, and health awareness. We are counting down the days to our First Annual Tuition Scholarship Gala - For the Love of Education planned for Friday, May 14 at the beautiful Gaelic Park in Oak Forest. Pass the word on to any graduates of our six founding parishes about this reunion evening. We would like to invite all alumni to reserve a table for their particular graduation year. 5 May 2, 2010 Page Five ON BUSINESS-SPEAK, AND GOALS & OBJECTIVES 2010 by John B. Reynolds It s review time at work. It s the time when I m asked to prepare the performance appraisals for the folks who work for me. According to today s business-speak, these people are my directs, or my reports, but having never been big on business-speak, I prefer to call these people Andrew, Ron, Jeff, Sheila, and Ricky. It takes a little longer to say, but I think it personalizes the workplace. I think it advances both the employee and the mission. I think it makes a quiet statement about how much I value these people not only as the team that does much of the work in our department, but also as distinct individuals who bring their own unique talents to the job everyday. Part of the review process, which is fundamentally an assessment of the past, is also an assessment of the future. Accordingly, I need to formalize as well the 2010/2011 goals and objectives for Andrew, Ron, Jeff, Sheila, and Ricky. This can be tricky for I ve learned from experience that priorities shift, and what s important today is not important tomorrow. Yogi Berra once observed that it s hard to make predictions, especially about the future. Absolutely. Just the same, I like the idea of goals and objectives because they give us something to focus on amid the craziness of our day-to-day work. Goals and objectives help us to see the corporate forest for the trees. This year, I was directed in a meeting to write four operational goals and two organizational goals each for Andrew, Ron, Jeff, Sheila, and Ricky. I think this is more business-speak because I just didn t understand the terminology. Fortunately, one of my co-managers didn t understand it either and asked for clarity just as I was about to do the same. We learned that operational goals equal personal goals and organizational goals equal departmental goals. My head is still spinning, but less so, with my remaining confusion now having to do with the overlap factor: some organizational goals are clearly dependent on individuals, and some operational goals clearly feed the organizational mission. All of which brings me to here with Jesus saying to his disciples in today s Gospel, I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. Per today s reflection in the Seasonal Missalette, Though we choose individually whether to be disciples of Jesus, to be a disciple is not an individual vocation. Discipleship takes place within the community Jesus formed, the community of the church. In my faith world, I am part of a community of disciples, true, but that community specifically is you and me and Joe and Susan and Ted and Eva and on and on and on. In my corporate world, it is operational and organizational goal-setting time for Andrew, Ron, Jeff, Sheila, and Ricky, so perhaps it s a good time, too, for each of us to assess our own operational and organizational goals relative to advancing our greatest mission, our never-shifting priority.
