1 Journey through the Old Testament Bible Survey of Exodus Theme: Deliverance. The word Exodus in Greek means, The way out. Key Text: 6:6:-8 "Therefore, say to the Israelites: 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.' It is linked to the book of Genesis by: The promises of God. (Genesis 15:13-14) Then the Lord said to him, know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated for 400 years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves and afterward they will come out with great possessions. By the people of God. (Exodus 1:1) EXODUS Chapters 1 18 Chapters deliverance from oppression in Egypt (Exodus 6:6). deliverance into the presence of God (Exodus 6:7). 2 1.0 Deliverance from Oppression in Egypt (Exodus 1-18) 1.1 God s people seemed doomed (Exodus 1) 1.2. God s promised deliverer is created. (Exodus 2-4) o Moses had godly parents (Hebrews 11:23) o Moses turned his back on Egypt By faith, Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. (Hebrews 11:26-27) o Moses needed to learn that only God could deliver his people God s power is displayed. (Exodus 5-12) o Pharaoh s heart is hardened by the truth. o There are ten plagues all sent to authenticate Moses and Aaron as God s representatives (Exodus 4:1-5) and to prove that God is the living God (Exodus 7:17). o The plagues are: the plague of blood, frogs, gnats, flies, livestock, boils, hail, locust, darkness and death. o The plague of death kills every first born son of an Egyptian. o The Hebrews are saved from this plague through the blood of the lamb. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. (Exodus 12:13) o The Passover foreshadows Christ. For Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed for us (I Corinthians 5:7) o The people don t leave empty handed (Exodus 12:36) 1.4. God s people are dedicated (Exodus 13-18) o After deliverance comes dedication. The Lord said to Moses consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first off spring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether man or animal. (Exodus 13:2) o In the midst of their dedication, God leads his people. (Exodus 13:22) o The people of God cross the Red sea on dry ground (Exodus 13:21) o Having been delivered, God s people sing. (Exodus 15) o Having been delivered, God s people want to go back! 3 2.0 Deliverance into the Presence of God (Exodus 19-40) God s purpose for us is to be in an intimate relationship with Him. The Lord would speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks with his friend. (Exodus 33:11) o It is intimacy intended from the beginning (Genesis 3:8) o It is an intimacy broken by sin. (Genesis 3:29 and Romans 3:11-12) o God delivers the Hebrews out of Egypt for this purpose, to have an intimate relationship with them. Then Moses went up to God and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel; You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles wings and brought you to myself (Exodus 19:3, 4) 2.1 They are delivered into God s presence and receive a revelation of who God is. o The law (Exodus 19-24) a revelation of God s character. 2.2 The Hebrews are delivered into God s presence and they receive an invitation to meet with him - The Tabernacle. (Exodus 25-40) o 50 chapters of the Bible are devoted to the construction, ritual, and priesthood of the tabernacle. 13 in Exodus, 18 in Leviticus, 13 in Numbers, 2 in Deuteronomy and 4 in Hebrews. o The book of Hebrews says the tabernacle is a - Copy and shadow of what is in heaven. (Hebrews 8:5) - the pattern of things in the heavens (Hebrews 9:23) - the figures of the true (Hebrews 9:24) - A shadow of good things to come (Hebrews 10:1) Fall 2010 Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church Page 3 of 6

4 The Tabernacle It s Furniture o It is made of the finest materials. o It measures about 75 feet wide and 150 feet long. o It consists of an outer court, the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. o Surrounded by a large linen fence o Only one gate. 1- Bronze altar o 7 feet square & 4 feet high. o There are horns on the four corners depicting Strength, Power, Help and Sanctuary. o Offerings for sin are primarily made here. o These offerings are made continually hence there were no chairs in the tabernacle for the priest to sit down! o Hebrews 10:12 says that after Jesus Christ offered the sacrifice of his blood for our sins he sat down. That means the sacrifice for our sins is complete. 2- Bronze basin o Used for cleansing o So we need to be cleansed of the dirt of this world by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.. 5 In the Holy Place The entire structure is about 45 ft by 15 feet by 15 feet high. The Holy Place is about double the size of the Most Holy Place. 3- Golden Lampstands o Made of one piece of gold, hammered, not molded. o There are three lamps on the right and three on the left adorned with gold carvings of almond blossoms and buds. o At the top of each of the branches there is a small almond-shaped bowl which holds oil, the wick is put in the oil and lit and is able to continue to burn as long as there is oil in the lamp. 4- Table of Showbread o Made of acacia wood, covered with gold. o Called in Hebrew bread of the face or bread of the presence. o Loaves of bread were placed on the table every Sabbath. 5- The Altar Of Incense o Incense is to be offered continually o This points us to the importance of prayer. 6 In the Most Holy Place 6- The Ark of the Testimony (refers to two pieces of furniture) o called the Ark of God in I Samuel 3:3; the Ark of the Covenant in Hebrews 9:4 o The place where Moses would meet with God. The Bottom o The first piece of furniture is called the ark (Genesis 25:10-16). Hebrew word aron which means chest, a coffin. o It is made of acacia wood and covered with gold. It measures about 3 ¾ feet long, 2 ¼ feet wide and 2 ¼ deep. o It is called the Ark of the Covenant because it contains the Testimony (the Ten Commandments), some manna and the rod of Aaron. The Top o The Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:17-23). A golden lid that covers the Ark. At each end is a golden cherubim with outstretched wings. They face each other and look down at the cover. 3.0 The Hebrew Are Delivered Into God s Presence And Thus See God s Glory (Exodus 40:34-38) For Group Discussion: 1.
