AIMS AND KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS ALIGNED TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY POLICY STATEMENT In order to support the Environment and Sustainably Policy Statement the following Aims and Key Performance Indicators have been put in place and agreed by SAF members Description Aim Key Performance Indicator(s) Responsibilities Carbon and Air Quality Management To use energy more efficiently and reduce the University s carbon emissions through efficient and responsible use of energy and water and by promoting resource efficiency associated with day-to-day activities and new developments. This in turn will contribute towards UK government targets of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by Glyndŵr University has set the following targets as part of its Carbon Management Plan: 20% by end 2015/16 34% by end 2020 Energy Team University Community Water Efficiency Sustainable Travel Reducing the University s carbon emissions through efficient and responsible use of (energy and) water, by promoting resource efficiency associated with day-to-day activities and new developments. Ease traffic and parking congestion at the University and reduce the environmental impact through a reduction in single occupancy car use, achieved by creating opportunities for staff, students and visitors to travel by alternative means of transport to the private vehicle. Reduce total water consumption (m3) by 5% by 2013 on 2009/10 levels Recommendations within surveys to be considered in conjunction with Carbon Management Plan targets 50% of DEC compliant buildings will have a water sub meter by 2013 Carry out a water usage comparison during the awareness campaigns 2012/13 Reduce the proportion of staff single occupancy car journeys to Glyndŵr University to no more than 5% by 2012 Reduce the proportion of student single occupancy car journeys to Glyndŵr University to no more than 14% by 2012 Waste Glyndŵr University is committed to the responsible management of its waste and will operate efficiently and legally in its purchasing, use and disposal of waste materials. These targets are regarded as the most appropriate means of effectively articulating all of the University s policies with regard to the promotion of alternative transport modes and will be achieved through a series of annual continual improvement programmes. Reduce total waste to landfill by 2% annually relative to 2009/10 levels by 2013 To achieve 90% recycling by 2013/14 Increase recycling by 3% annually Commencement of segregation and recycle Catering s
catering preparation and end wastes by 2013 Sustainable Procurement Emissions and Discharges Glyndŵr University is committed to seeking to influence its suppliers and contractors through the development and implementation of a sustainable procurement policy, an objective of which will require sustainable issues to be considered in the procurement of all goods and services supplied to the University. Glyndŵr University is committed to preventing pollution whenever possible by reducing emissions and discharges in relation to direct to air and water emissions and discharges from on campus consumption/activities e.g. water disposal or boiler operations. Retention of annual University Fairtrade status Meeting KPI s in Sustainable Food Policy Science/Research Academic Area to have available information on emissions and discharges. All boilers are serviced in accordance with UK legislation. Procurement Catering Head of IT Biodiversity Glyndŵr University is committed to protecting natural habitats and local wildlife and conserving biological diversity. See David Skydmore for more information should be able to be determined from biodiversity action plan Project Director, Projects and Horticulture Sustainable Construction Ensure, as far as possible, all new buildings exceed all, relevant UK, European and international environmental legislation and regulatory codes of practice. Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10% above current building regulations for new builds and 7% for refurbishments Provide 10% of energy requirements from renewable and low carbon energy sources for all new build projects All external design/construction agencies Community involvement on Environmental As part of this policy, the University also recognises that the impact refurbishment of buildings can have, and will therefore assess all new developments and major refurbishments against recognised best practice. Engage staff and students to provide their ideas on how the University Develop a student environmental induction programme for new students by/for implementation of start of academic year 2012/13 Executive Head of Human Resources
Issues can help meet the challenges of sustainable development. Aim To ensure that all staff, students and internal/external stakeholders have an opportunity to contribute towards and have an understanding of their own responsibilities in helping achieve an improvement in Glyndŵr University s environmental performance. By academic year 2012/13, a staff and student environmental awareness suggestion scheme will be made available linked with a small investment fund for implementation of viable suggestions Link in suggestions with submissions to the annual Celebrating Staff Success Awards to recognise and reward staff/student participation By January 2013, all staff and students are aware of Glyndŵr University s environmental strategy and how they can contribute Participate in Environmental and Sustainability National Awareness Campaigns (minimum 2 per academic year) Student Guild to achieve Green Impact Awards by Student Guild to have participated in Green Gown awards by 2014 Associate Director Student Experience Student Guild Awareness Raising, Training and Communication Promote environmental practices for learners, staff and the wider community. Engage staff and students to provide their ideas on how the University can help meet the challenges of sustainable development. Awareness and effective communication are key to the success of any environmental initiative. In recent years we have carried out a number of activities to increase awareness, both with the student body and staff. There are a number of channels of communication already established. 50% of staff to have participated in Environmental and Sustainability Awareness Sessions by 2013 A minimum of one press release to be issued in relation to Green Issues Targets contained within the Carbon Management Plan to be met year on year Environmental issues to be discussed at departmental meetings SHE Marketing The establishment of a Green Champions Network, which aims to bring together people from a broad spectrum from Academic Areas / Operational Departments to share ideas and act as champions within their own work areas to reduce environmental impacts, has improved our communication network.
As well as our internal audiences, there are significant external audiences that we are accountable to, in a variety of ways including, the local community, funders (e.g. HEFCW), local authorities and potential students. Within the Students Guild there is an executive position that oversees environmental issues, and this has provided an excellent link with the student body. Corporate Governance For an organisation to show that it is truly committed to improving its environmental performance, it must ensure that the environment is fully considered within its operation and decision making processes. The University has clearly demonstrated its commitment to the environmental agenda through its capital investments, a formal Safety Health and Environment Committee, a ring fenced environment/sustainability budget. One of our greatest challenges will be to ensure that environment is embedded within our policies and strategies. As we do further work on the environmental agenda, it will be appropriate to ensure that it is clearly within our mission and values. The development of an Environmental Management System will provide the framework for ensuring our operations and activities are assessed, targets set, progress monitored and continual improvements achieved. Environmental Management System to be operational throughout the University by the end of 2012 The University to be accredited with ISO Environmental Management System Board of Governors to receive annual report on Environmental Management System to include progress report of objective Increase position within the Green League table by 2013 Meet the requirements of Universities UK Statement of Intent on Sustainable Development Achieve all recommendations within the internal audit on the Carbon Management Plan by 2013 Asbestos, Legionella and Radiation Policy s and Plan s in place SHE Student Guild Information Technologies (IT) IT provides and supports the IT infrastructure for the University. The ongoing and increasing demand for complex systems and services has a significant impact on the environment, in terms of energy consumption and sustainability. We are committed to minimising this impact wherever practical, working in partnership with Academic Areas / Operational Departments and the Students Guild to improve performance in a sustainable way. IT is embedding sustainable practice into normal operations, but more can be done in the short, medium and long term to green the provision of IT services and facilities. Technologies which facilitate collaboration and communication and therefore reduce the need for University members to travel will be deployed wherever appropriate. Members of the University adopting green practice in everyday use of IT Increase the use of server-hosting services and reduce the number of inefficient server rooms scattered throughout campuses by 2014 Increase the use of thin client computing by 2014 Promote the communication and collaboration technologies which allow home working and reduce un-needed travel Head of IT
Teaching and Learning Embed across the curriculum the cross cutting themes of sustainable development, environmental management, and global citizenship, and fostering learning behaviours to be environmentally conscious. The University has a strong portfolio within traditional environmental fields and a number of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses explicitly deal with environment issues. Increasingly the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainability are becoming intertwined within teaching in a number of non environmental areas The numbers of students on environmentally relevant modules and courses Head of Teaching and Learning Strategy Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning Strategy Project Director, Projects and Horticulture The University attracts the very best students, many of whom will become leaders of industry and commerce, as such equipping them with the knowledge and skills of the environmental agenda will contribute to society in the future.
