1 Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln, President of the People By Yannick Oney ISBN Teacher: Karen Ours Unit Topic: Abraham Lincoln Grade: 2 - Special Ed/MIMR * This lesson is designed for a mentally handicapped group of 2nd graders, learning the 2 nd grade Social Studies and History content, in a combination inclusion/pull out programs. History Essential Questions: How did Abraham Lincoln help improve the lives of other Americans? What did Abraham Lincoln do to be remembered as a great American? Standards of Learning: History SOL: The student will: 2.11 Identify Abraham Lincoln as an American whose contributions improved the lives of other Americans. English SOL: The student will: 2.3 Use oral communication skills. a) Use oral language for different purposes: to inform b) Share information orally with an audience. 2.5 Use meaning clues and language structure when reading. c) Use knowledge of story structure and sequence. Content: The student will: 1. Identify events in Abraham Lincoln s life that improved the lives of other Americans in the United States. Process: The student will: 1. Share information orally from a story read aloud. 2. Sequence events from a story. 3. Determine the author s purpose for a story. Materials: Oney, Yannick, Abe Lincoln President of the People New York: Scholastic books, 2005 ISBN # A variety of trade books that demonstrate the author s purpose: to entertain, to persuade, and to inform. Handout #1- teacher pictures Handout #2- mini book Handout #3- question checklist Assessment/Evaluation: The student will: 1. Be observed as he/she reads the mini book on Abraham Lincoln.

2 2. Be assessed while sequencing events that happened in Abraham Lincoln s life and explain the events orally. 3. Be graded on answering questions relating to Abraham Lincoln s accomplishments and how he improved the lives of other Americans Lesson Procedure: Background Knowledge/Purpose Setting: The teacher will: 1. Introduce Abraham Lincoln: Why do you think he is an important person to learn about? Have you heard his name before? In this lesson we will learn why Abraham Lincoln is important. Show the students a picture of Abraham Lincoln Before Reading: The teacher will: 1. Introduce that books have different purposes: to entertain, inform or persuade. Show the students examples of each type of book or article. Discuss the different purposes of books. 2. Show the students Abe Lincoln President for the People and ask the students what they think the purpose of this book might be. Discuss that this book will be giving information on the life of Abe Lincoln During Reading: The teacher will: 1. Tell students as they read the book to listen for events in Abe s life and determine how he improved the lives of other Americans. 2. Read the story to the students. 3. Stop periodically and discuss the major events in Abe s life. Focus on: 1. growing up in a log cabin with little schooling, 2. He becomes president and the Civil War starts, 3. He frees the slaves with the emancipation proclamation. 4. He is killed at the theater, and 5. The different ways Abe is honored, the penny, President s Day, and the Lincoln memorial. After Reading: The teacher will: 1. Discuss the events talked about while reading the book and how he changed the lives of other Americans. 2. Show the pictures and sentences for events that happened in Abe s life (put magnets on the back of teacher version). Have students place the events on the board in correct order on a magnetic board. 3. As the students place the events in order, have them explain each event. 4. What was the author s purpose for writing this book? 5. Have the students make their own book by matching and ordering the pictures and sentences. 6. Have the students practice reading the mini book to a partner. Closure: The student will: 1. Read their mini book to the teacher 2. Take the magnetic pictures and sentences and place them in order on the board 3. Explain each event as they complete the event order. 4. Ask each student the following question:

Extension/ Differentiation: The student could: 1. Compare and contrast his/her childhood with that of Abraham Lincoln. 2. Plan a President s Day celebration and decorate with pictures that show how Lincoln improved the lives of Americans.
