2 Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Panel Data Analysis Workshop by Prof Dr. Fadzlan Sufian Introduction This workshop will incorporate basic and advanced methods in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Panel Data Analysis. The workshop aims to provide better understanding on the concept of the efficiency and productivity using the DEA approach. This workshop will also emphasize the practical aspects to enable the participants to get familiarized with panel data structures and equip them with the core skills in using panel data methods. This two days workshop will be conducted in lectures and computer lab sessions, with greater emphasis on giving participants hands-on experience in handling different datasets. What is DEA? Data Envelopment Analysis is a mathematical programming technique often used for performance benchmarking. While it was originally developed for measuring the efficiency of public sector enterprises, it has found widespread applications in the context of financial service industries like banking and insurance. During the last three decades, Data Envelopment Analysis has gained immense popularity as a research tool. What is Panel Data? Panel data involves the pooling of observations on the same entities like individuals, firms, markets, countries, etc over multiple time periods. Panel data analysis has two main advantages over cross-sectional or time series analysis: (i) it utilizes more information and introduces more variability in the data and hence inference of model parameters can be more accurate; (ii) controlling for omitted / missing / unobserved factors. Recently panel data has receiving gradually increasing interest for empirical analysis in the economics and finance literature. Panel data sets for economic research possess several major advantages over conventional cross-sectional or time-series data. Panel data creates a large number of data points, increasing the degrees of freedom and reducing the collinearity among explanatory variables hence improving the efficiency of econometrics estimates and also allows researchers to analyze a number of important finance and economic questions that cannot be addressed using cross-sectional or time series data (Baltagi 2001; Hsiao 1986). 1

Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares Bootstrap Regression Analysis About the Speaker Professor Dr. Fadzlan Sufian is an expert in banking and/or financial sector performance analysis - Efficiency, Productivity, and Profitability, Parametric and Non-Parametric Methods - Commercial Banks, Non-Commercial Bank Financial Institutions, Islamic Banking, Insurance Industry, Unit Trust Industry, etc. He is an expert in research software packages especially Data Envelopment Analysisi (DEA), E-Views and STATA. To date, Professor Dr. Fadzlan Sufian has presented empirical research papers at various national and international peer-reviewed conferences. His papers have been published and are forthcoming in more than 140 scholarly peer-reviewed national and international journals and edited books (60 SCOPUS inclusive of 18 SSCI and/or SCI indexed journals). In addition, he has 29 papers (23 SCOPUS inclusive of 10 SSCI and/or SCI indexed journals) currently at various stages of the peer-review process. His works have been cited in more than 1050 journals and working papers (Source: Google Scholar). At present, his h-indices are 17 (maintained by Google Scholar) and 7 (maintained by SCOPUS) respectively. He is ranked among the top 2% economists in the field of banking (23/1,294) and efficiency and productivity (26/1,446) in the world. He is also among the top young economists in the world (10< years # 56) and ranked among the top 10% economists in Asia (199/3,598) and Malaysia (14/176) (source: RePEc). He is keen in sharing his knowledge and expertise in: 1. Research writing and publications in high impact journals and/or seminars. 2. Workshop in banking and/or financial institutions performance analysis using EViews, DEA and STATA software packages. 3. Masters and PhD Thesis Writing. Who should attend? The workshop is targeted to graduate students, academicians, researchers, practitioners and analysts. The knowledge and skill obtained from this workshop are useful for those who are interested and require analyzing the efficiency and productivity of the financial institution, private and public sector. 2
