2 It s called a Writing Process Step 1 READ THE PROMPT Read carefully through the prompt twice Underline key words and phrases that clarify what the prompt is supposed to be about Step 2 MAKE A PLAN, INCLUDING DETAILS Create a plan, such as an outline or other organizing method. Make sure you have an idea of how you will divide the essay into paragraphs. Brainstorm details images, examples, reasons, facts, etc. for each paragraph indicated in your plan

3 It s called a Writing Process Step 3 DRAFT YOUR ESSAY, REFERRING TO YOUR PLAN AS YOU WRITE Draft your opening paragraph Use key words and ideas from the prompt to help focus your essay Maybe do it after body leave lines blank Draft about three body paragraphs, referring to your plan to help you stay focused May deviate from plan if you think it will improve your essay Draft a concluding paragraph that leaves reader with a strong, emphatic idea to take away from your essay.

4 It s called a Writing Process Step 4 REREAD YOUR ESSAY FOR ITS CONTENT. MAKE CHANGES AND INSERTIONS NEATLY AND CAREFULLY Check your essay against the prompt Have you fully answered the questions from your prompt? Can you add any more details to fill out an y of your ideas? Can you insert phrases or sentences to improve a transition? Can you revise a passage to make it relate more clearly to the prompt?

5 LAST STEP FINALLY Step 5 EDIT, MAKING YOUR CHANGES NEATLY AND CLEARLY Use the items on the HSAP Checklist (coming up) to proofread your essay. Check for any types of errors that you know you commonly make.

9 Sample prompt for a Persuasive Essay Your school principal has announced that a committee will review your school s dress code. The committee wants input from students about how to change the dress code. The committee has asked students who want to make a suggestion to write an essay, explaining one change that should be made to the dress code and giving reasons for that change. Write a persuasive essay in which you propose a change in your school s dress code. Describe the change and give reasons why the committee should adopt this change. Use specific examples and evidence to support your point of view. (Give out DHS dress code and do following activity)

10 How to Persuade Begin your persuasive essay by making sure that your readers understand what is at stake or why the issue is important. Explain issue Give background Figure out reasons to give in support of an opinion or proposal Examples, facts, experiences Focus on tone that will appeal to the audience (ex. School committee) Make your strongest appeal to the audience in your conclusion. The last part to be read and remembered Don t just repeat; give your strongest point!

12 EXPOSITORY WRITING A strong expository essay includes believable examples, and solid, welldeveloped reasons.

13 What is an Expository Essay? Writing that explains, often describes, a topic for a particular purpose. Takes into account what a reader NEEDS to know to understand an idea, a process, an event, or another topic. On HSAP, it is called the EXTENDED RESPONSE

14 Types of Expository Essays 1. Sequence-In this type of an essay the writer shows the list of events taking place or he can also define a process of something for eg. Driving instructions.

15 Types of Expository Essays 2. Descriptive essay-in is a type of an essay which shows the reader easily understand the view point of the writer. The writer describe the importance of the topic and its various aspects. In this the writer has to keep in mind many things so that the reader understand the writer s will.

16 Types of Expository Essays 3. Classification-In this, the writer arranges groups of objects or ideas according to the main topic. This makes reading easy for the reader. Proper classification of ideas is done in expository essay.

17 Types of Expository Essays 4. Comparison-In expository writing, comparison shows the contrast and similarities between the two things. This type of structure determines which is better among the two.

18 Types of Expository Essays 5. Cause and effect-cause and effect writing identifies the reason for something and it also shows the effect of the cause. In this the writer tries to explain that there is a cause behind every effect.

19 Example Expository Essay Prompt Your class has decided to put on a new fundraising event for the school an event that will draw in the community. Each student will present an idea for this event. Write an essay in which you describe a fundraising event that you would like your class to put on. Explain how the event would attract people from the community in order to make money. Provide any other reasons that this event would be a good choice for your class.

20 Organization 1. The first task is to DESCRIBE the event. SET THE STAGE 2. The next task is to EXPLAIN how the event will attract people and make money. REASONS get them excited! 3. The final task is to PROVIDE other reasons why the event is a good choice. HOW?

22 IT S TIME Fill out the organization sheet based on your own expository essay prompt! Pay attention to the PURPOSE of the essays. What does your reader need to know to understand what you are explaining?

23 Planning the Expository Essay 1. Begin your essay by setting the stage, based on the topic given in the prompt. a) What will you describe in order to set the stage? b) List descriptive details you will use to develop this idea.

24 Planning the Expository Essay 2. Develop the middle of your essay with the most important information the prompt asks for. a) What is the most important information? b) List groups of reasons, examples, and details you will use to develop this idea.

25 Planning the Expository Essay 3. End your essay with any additional information mentioned in the prompt. 1. What additional information does the prompt ask for? 2. List reasons, examples, and details, you will use to develop your ending.

26 Next Write a TITLE for your essay: HSAP tip: Do not forget that the BODY of your essay will have about 3 paragraphs to develop your ideas. Group ideas into paragraphs as you make your plan.
