1 ESL Lesson 3.4: Personal Safety Industry-related ESL for Manufacturing Background information for the instructor: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has designed specific safety guidelines to protect workers, keep facilities safe, and maintain healthy workplaces. In general, occupational illnesses and injuries among industry workers are on the rise, contributing to numerous lost workdays by employees. To prevent injuries and illnesses on the job, workers need to know the hazards associated with their jobs, proper lifting techniques, safety guidelines and protective measures set by OSHA. 38

2 Industry-related ESL for Manufacturing Lesson Objectives Assessment Evidence Recall and understand background information Generate and orally practice industry-related vocabulary (fifteen words) Orally practice and accurately identify vocabulary through picture clues (ten words) Learn and apply basic sight words and phrases Orally practice personal safety vocabulary coupled with sight word phrases Construct meaningful sentences related to personal safety Read a selection of industry related text Respond in writing to safety scenarios requiring reasons for particular safety gear student participation student brainstorming and participation student participation student participation student participation Informal assessment of student participation and completion of activity Write three questions for comprehension. 3 Develop students background information: Share the following information with the students. Industry workers are exposed to a variety of risks at work. Depending on the type of industry and the particular job performed, workers may be exposed to several risks every day. Some of the potential risks may be: back injuries unsafe lifting habits fire careless smoking electrical equipment machine equipment tool equipment slips, trips and falls unsafe work areas chemicals hazardous materials In today s lesson, students will learn about some general personal safety practices (habits) that help to keep workers safe in any working environment. Materials: Flip chart paper, markers, student notebooks and 3X5 cards. Initial Inquiry Initiate a discussion with questions like: What do you know about personal safety on the job? Why do workers need to practice safe work habits? What are some personal safety measures workers can put into practice daily? What are the consequences of poor safety practices? What are examples of appropriate work clothing? Accept all reasonable responses from the students. As they share their ideas, jot notes on the flip chart underlining the key vocabulary that emerges. The instructor may assist the students to elicit key terms. Orally define the vocabulary with student input. Explicitly point out the cognates or near cognates. These are highlighted on the suggested vocabulary list. Practice the cognates and draw the students attention to the pronunciation while focusing on the vowel sounds and tricky consonants (gear, guidelines, signs). 40

4 Suggested vocabulary might include: personal safety keep a safe working environment injury practice safe dress habits correct equipment handling lift/carry correctly use PPE (personal protection equipment) follow safety guidelines stay attentive permanent damage proper handling of hazardous materials personal protection protect self and others wear protective gear stay healthy correct tool use remain alert read safety signs do not take short cuts on the job injury/ time off health risks Safety Equipment & related vocabulary eye /ear protection dust vapors metal shavings/particles chemicals safety glasses face shields proper clothing/not loose properly fitted stationary objects injury moving objects jewelry footwear heavy objects electricity conductor steel toe shoes/boots non-slip soles ear muffs high noise/noisy ear damage hearing loss ear plugs lifting/carrying tools equipment back injury pain permanent damage heavy materials accidents proper conduct seriously safe working environment Learning Activity Part 1 Tell the students that when it comes to safety, there can never be enough time given to the practice of personal safety and the safety of others. This is particularly important in the manufacturing environment. Plant safety should be important to technicians, machine operators, line workers, assemblers, materials handlers, janitorial staff, office personnel, managers and supervisors. Carelessness, complacency and neglect of good safety habits can have serious consequences, such as expensive property damage or, worse yet, personal injury. 41

5 The following translations may help the students understand the concept of carelessness. carelessness complacency neglect = descuido = falsa seguridad = negligencia Safety is extremely important in the manufacturing work environment. For this reason, it is essential that all personnel learn and practice personal safety procedures and apply them in a professional manner to safeguard the health and welfare of all. Personal safety begins with a positive mental attitude. It promotes a healthy working environment and validates everyone s confidence in the operation of a facility. Tell the students that personal safety involves safe work practices. Write the following information on the flip chart: Safety Practices Eye protection Proper attire: shoes, gloves, hair, jewelry Ear protection: plugs Lifting and carrying Proper conduct Refer the students to the pages in the student workbook entitled Personal Safety. Lead the students in an echo reading as they follow along. Read slowly and enunciate clearly. Read the information under each heading one group at a time and stop to check for understanding. Clarify as needed. Have the students read to a partner and reverse roles. Check that the students pronunciation, intonation and rhythm match yours. Assessment: Informal assessment of student participation Learning Activity Part 2 Refer the students to the page in the student workbook entitled Safety Gear. Tell the students they will participate in another activity to reinforce the importance of workplace safety equipment. Have the students complete the activity with a partner. Circulate and assist as necessary. When most of the students have finished, have them regroup as a whole and share their work. 42

6 Assessment: Informal assessment of student participation and completion of activity. Sounds of English (Sight Word Activity) Tell the students there is a list of over 200 words in English that can enhance oral language and reading ability, especially for English language learners. These are words that are commonly used in reading. They represent over 50% of all the words in texts. These words are known as sight words. Many sight words cannot be sounded out by the pronunciation rules. Many cannot be represented by pictures. Sight words should be learned by sight. Refer the students to the two lists of basic sight words and corresponding phrases in the student workbook pages entitled Basic Sight Words and Phrases. There are 40 words to be learned. Have the students listen carefully as the instructor reads each word and they echo read. Read the sight words a second time. Continue by reading the phrases. Have the students repeat each phrase until they become confident in their ability to recognize them by sight. Check that students pronunciation, intonation and rhythm match yours. Provide several opportunities for the students to read by using paired, ear to ear and independent reading. Ask the students to read to a partner and then reverse roles. Assessment: Informal assessment of student participation Sounds of English Extension Refer the students to the page in the student workbook entitled Personal Safety Words and Phrases. Tell the students that the highlighted words and phrases within each chart are key vocabulary related to personal safety in the workplace. Read the words and phrases in each chart as the students follow along. Check for understanding and clarify information as needed. Ask for volunteers to read one chart at a time. Assessment: Informal assessment of student participation Related Language Activity Group the students in triads. Explain to the students they will participate in an activity to better their oral language skills, listening skills, thinking skills and reading and writing skills. Tell the students to use the Personal Safety Words and Phrases to construct meaningful sentences related to personal safety. Refer the students to the page in the student workbook called Safety Vocabulary and Sight Words in Sentences. 43

7 Assessment: Informal assessment of student participation and completion of activity Reading in Context Direct the students to the page in the student workbook entitled Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). Lead the students in an echo reading as they follow along. Read slowly and enunciate clearly. Read the selection a phrase at a time. Read with inflection and emotion. Repeat several times until the students become confident. Check that the students pronunciation, intonation and rhythm match yours. Provide several opportunities for the students to read by using paired reading, ear to ear and independent reading. Ask the students to read to a partner and then reverse roles. Assessment: Tell the students: Write three questions about the selection you want me to answer. I will write three questions for you to answer. Writing in Context Refer the students to the page in the student workbook entitled Safety Gear and Equipment. Pair the students. Read the directions to the students and model one example. Have the students complete the activity. When most of the students have finished, have them regroup and share written responses with the whole class. Assessment: Informal assessment of student participation and completion of activity. Summation Have the students summarize the day s activities. Write the summary on the flip chart. Ask questions like: What did you learn today? Can anybody share? Can I ask for a volunteer? The students summary should include comments like: Today we learned about personal safety in the workplace. We learned about the types of risks industry workers face on a day to day basis. We talked about how personal safety practices can reduce risks and serious consequences in the workplace. We learned about all types of personal protection equipment. There are goggles and safety glasses to protect the eyes as well as ear plugs and ear muffs to protect the ears. There are steel toe boots to protect the feet and heavy 44

8 duty gloves to protect the hands. We learned that wearing jewelry can be a potential risk when working with electricity or machines with moving parts. We learned some of the basic sight words. These are words that appear more often in reading and are learned by sight. We used the sight words along with personal safety vocabulary to construct sentences. We read a passage about the Occupational Safety and Health Act. We understand the government passed the act to protect the safety of all workers. Finally, we wrote sentences to explain why workers need to use a particular piece of safety equipment. Have the students complete the Lesson #3.4 Lesson Review. 45
