1 My Money Week National Competition It s back for 2016! The National Competition for Schools returns in 2016, and this year alongside the great prizes on offer for the winners, the first 100 schools to enter will also be offered a FREE class visit to KidZania London! 1 This year we are considering how we value what makes us happy. Learning how to value the things that are truly important to us and be able to make decisions about what we really need or just want are key to managing our money effectively. We have developed lesson plans to support and help you inspire your pupils to produce creative competition entries, and become more financially capable at the same time! How to enter: 1) Use the activities in this pack to inspire students to produce creative competition entries. 2) Complete one entry per student, and one overall teacher entry form per class or group. 3) Send your entries to the free post address by Saturday 2 nd July Good luck! 1 The first 100 schools entering Young Enterprise s My Money Week national competition will be offered a FREE class visit to KidZania London for up to 30 children (plus a maximum of 6 accompanying adults). Visits need to take place during 5 th -16 th September and 3rd - 21st October 2016 (excludes weekends). Eligible schools will be notified w/c 11 July, and provided with booking instructions. Any and all transport and travel arrangements, including any incurred costs, will be the sole responsibility of the school. 1

2 My Money Week National Competition 2016 Ages 7-11 Lesson Plan Learning Objectives To understand that our happiness is not always dependent on money To know that other people may make different happiness choices because they have different needs and wants to our own To understand that we might value things differently depending on how we feel about them and how much they cost To create an interesting and personal Happiness Chart for the My Money Week competition 2016 Learning Outcomes All pupils will understand that some of the things that make us happy can be free Most pupils will be able to identify their own happiness needs and wants and appreciate that others might choose differently Some pupils will be able to make choices based on a range of values not just cost Time: One hour plus additional time for producing competition entries Resources: Happiness Grid Happiness Chart Template Introduction Read the article on page 3 of the Primary My Money Weekly Newspaper. Discuss with the children if they agree or disagree with the idea that money can t buy happiness? In groups ask the children to think of things that they like to do that make them feel happy, discuss if these are things that are free to do or that cost money and whether that makes any difference to how happy they might feel? Is it true that sometimes doing things to make other people happy also makes us happy? Main Activity Give each group a copy of the Happiness Grid ask them to identify the things in the grid which would make them happy. Are they able to agree as a group or do they have different opinions on what would make them happy? Next ask them to look at the things they have identified and think about which of them COST money and which are things that are FREE, and to record their top 5 on a piece of paper. Ask them to add their own happy ideas to their list too if they want. Share their results as a class. Use this as an opportunity to explore the things that make them happy and if they all made similar choices; whether the things that made them 2

3 happy are wants or needs and if they were free or had a cost. With older KS2 pupils you could explore if things are really free, e.g. going to the park might not cost them any money but who pays for the park? If they had to make a choice between something that was free and something that cost what would they do? How do they value the things that make them happy? Competition Entry Outline the Money Week 2016 competition, and explain that this year we are asking pupils to think about what makes them happy. Their challenge is to produce a Happiness Chart showing five different things that make them happy e.g. being kind to other people, spending time with friends, receiving a gift etc. Pupils should then rank them in terms of importance thinking about the value of money they would place on each of the things that make them happy. Explain that children all over the country will be producing their own happiness charts. Detail the prizes to be won, and explain that their entries will be competing with other primary schools from all over the country. The children should identify and draw a picture of each of their ideas and then give them a happiness score using the given amounts. They should also complete the short written section to explain their ideas in more detail. When the children have created their charts, identify as a class the top five things that make them happy and add this information to the teacher cover sheet. Plenary Discuss the top five ideas they have come up with. How could they bring happiness into their classroom? Extension Ideas Create a happiness wall for children, parents and staff to share their own ideas. Challenge the children to think of different ways to help make school a happier place: If they had to do it for free Or if they had 100 3
