3 Engineering and Fabrication of Metal Expansion Joints Metal Expansion Joints are designed to absorb axial, lateral and angular motion in any combination as a result of thermal or mechanical movements. They are divided into different families, each one being designed for its intended purpose and varying workload conditions: Axial Expansion Joints Lateral Expansion Joints Angular Expansion Joints Universal Expansion Joints Metal Expansion Joints can be provided with round or rectangular sections, as designed to meet the specific needs of the customer. Fabrication of Metal Expansion Joints The Metal Bellows element is produced beginning with a thin sheet of steel that is precision rolled and welded into a tube that is then mechanically or hydraulically formed into convolutions in the quantity and shape to meet the engineering requirements. Typically, flanges or weld bands are then added to the ends of the bellows element to aid in field installation due to the thinness of the material. Tie rods, hinges, covers and liners can then be added to the assembly to accommodate the design specifications. Finite Element Analysis of Tie Rods Metal Expansion Joint Engineering Flexider USA designs and engineers all Metal Expansion Joints to the current edition of the Standards of the Expansion Joint Manufacturer s Association. (EJMA) When required, expansion joints are also designed to ASME Section VIII Division 1, Appendix 26, B31.3 Appendix X and ASME B31.1. Engineering design for all metal expansion joints starts at the inquiry stage and a Bellows Design Analysis (BDA) is prepared for each expansion joint required. 4 Fabrication and Design of Fabric and Rubber Bellows Flexider USA designs and manufactures rubber and fabric expansion joints utilizing state of the art PTFE and Elastomeric fiberglass reinforced materials. The metal frames come in a variety of styles, including integral telescoping liners, welded and bolt-in frames. Flexider USA Fabric and Rubber joints are used in a variety of applications, including: Desalinization Plants Power Plants Pumping Stations FGD Marine Offshore Fabric Expansion Joints Fabric Expansion Joint Fabric Expansion Joints can be designed to withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit through the use of insulating materials and additional duct wall stand-off. They are complete structures, combining various materials and utilizing their combined thermal, chemical, mechanical resistance and fatigue properties in order to provide technical solutions for specific applications. They are commonly used for: Absorbing Thermal Expansion Allowing Axial, Lateral and Angular Motion Fabric Expansion Joints can be provided in different shapes (round, rectangular etc) according to varying needs and requirements of the customer. Fabric Expansion Joint Fabric Belt Material Rubber Bellows Fabric Expansion Joint Rubber Expansion Joints Flexider USA Rubber Bellows are flexible connections made from elastomers, and can be designed to accommodate the many types of movement encountered on different types of process equipment: Noise Reduction Vibration Isolation Stress Neutralization; axial, lateral, angular and torsional Misalignment Compensation at plant start-ups and new equipment installations.
