2 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Electra-Steer remote outboard steering system. This manual has been provided to assist you in the installation, operation and maintenance of the Electra-Steer system. The system is made up of three parts; The pendant, drive assembly, and steering cable. The pendant provides the human interface with the steering motor. By pushing the steering switch on the pendant forward or backward power is turned on and off and polarity reversed to the input of the drive motor causing the motor to run forwards and backwards. This forward and backward motion is transferred through a single reduction gear set in the drive assembly. The output from the gear set is transferred to the steering cable. The movement in the steering cable causes an extension and retraction of the cable end and consequently the movement at the outboard motor. NOTE: Follow the instructions in this manual carefully. Failure to do so may result in damage to the steering system, or boat wiring. Such damage may also result in voiding the warranty. 1

5 Warranty 1. We warrant that the equipment is free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. The provisions of this warranty shall not apply to any equipment that has been subject to misuse, negligence, alteration, accident, improper installation, normal deterioration due to wear, or has been repaired outside our place of business in any way as in our reasonable judgement, to adversely affect its performance and reliability. 2. Our obligation under this warranty is limited to repairing or replacing, at our option, any product that is returned to our place of business and when in its examination shall disclose to our reasonable satisfaction that it is defective. The repair or replacement of the defective parts under this warranty will be made without charge for parts or labor accrued at our place of business. Shipping charges for returning parts to BDF Design, LLC shall be the responsibility of the customer. BDF Design, LLC will pay shipping charges when returning warrantable parts to the customer. BDF Design, LLC will not accept C.O.D. shipments of returned goods. 3. The warranty is effective as of the date of sale to the original purchaser and extends for a period of 1 year. Since it is the responsibility of the owner to verify original purchase date, BDF Design, LLC recommends that a bill of sale or sales receipt be kept with the owners manual. 4. The duration of any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose shall be limited in all respects to the duration of the limited warranty, and the warranty described above shall be in lieu of any other express warranty. Some states do not allow limitations on how long implied warranties last, so the above limitations may not apply to you. We neither assume or authorize any other persons to assume any other liability in connection with our products. 4

6 Warranty contd. 5. The buyer's sole and exclusive remedy against the seller shall be for the repair or replacement of defective merchandise as provided above. No other remedy, including but not limited to, incidental or consequential damages for lost profits, lost sales, injury to property or any other incidental or consequential loss, shall be available to him. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you. Before using, user shall determine the suitability of the product for its intended use, and user assumes all risk and liability whatsoever in connection there with. 6. BDF Design, LLC will not, under any circumstances, reimburse the cost of warranty parts purchased from sources other than BDF Design, LLC. 7. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state. Warranty Guidelines and Procedures 1. It is advisable where practical to ship the entire unit back to BDF Design, LLC for warranty review. We will repair or replace the individual parts as required. 2. A Returned Goods Authorization (RGA) number must first be obtained before any parts are sent in. Call BDF Design, LLC at for an RGA number. 3. Our warranty does not cover travel time, mileage, labor for removal and reinstallation of the unit, or any other incidental costs. It is limited solely to the replacement of defective parts under warranty. 5

7 Operation 1. After the installation is complete plug in the pendant cord set to the pendant receptacle. 2. Turn the power on to the remote steering system (if equipped with separate power switch). 3. Push the pendant switch forward and the motor should start to run. 4. Release the switch and the motor will stop in that position. 5. Pull the switch back and the motor should run the opposite direction. 6. Release the pendant switch. 7. When operating your remote outboard steering system start out by practicing in open water away from other boats and obstacles until you have mastered the control. The system will take a little while to get used to. Small movements of the steering system usually will make it easier to control the boat and prevent hunting from port to starboard when first learning. WARNING: Do not engage the pendant switch for extended time periods as this will cause the drive motor to stall and could cause damage to the motor. CAUTION: Do not use this steering system at speeds above 5 mph. Steering instability and loss of boat control may occur during high speed operation. 6

8 Installation The first step in installing your Electra-Steer steering system is to select a suitable routing path for the steering cable. The steering rod of the cable will be installed into the outboard motor tilt tube while the other end of the cable will be routed to the steering gear motor. When selecting a routing path for the steering cable be careful to avoid any sharp radius bends. The most direct and straight path is usually the best. The cable should not be routed where the bend radius is less than 10 inches. In addition keep the cable away from any heat sources. 10" Minimum R. Start out by loosely connecting the Steering rod of the cable to the tilt tube of your outboard motor and layout a path back to the steering motor. Depending on your particular boat and outboard motor location this may require cutting clearance holes in your boat for cable routing. If this is required be sure that the routing of the unit is correct prior to cutting. CAUTION: Do not mount the steering unit in the bilge of your boat it is designed to be mounted above the floor level of your boat where it will have adequate fresh air flow. 7

9 Installation Next secure the flush mount pendant cord receptacle. Start by disconnecting the harness plug from the steering gear motor if not already done. Feed the wires through the 1" diameter center hole fully until the pendant plug is tight up against the mounting surface. Install the two number 10 sheet metal screws and tighten. Route the motor plug side of the harness to the steering gear motor and the battery side of the harness to the battery. At this time you should connect the motor to the harness and make the connections at the battery. The Red lead with the fuse holder should be connected to the battery positive post and the black lead should be connected to the battery negative post. 10 Installation Fully insert the pendant cord plug into the pendant receptacle. Toggle the switch back and forth this should cause the motor to run forward and backward. If it does not function properly see the trouble shooting guide. Next remove the protective plastic sheath from the steering cable covering the drive end of the cable. Insert the drive end of the cable into the opening of the steering drive unit as illustrated below. The cable should slip in and stop. Once inserted push the switch on the pendant forward and feed the cable into the steering unit until the cable end of the cable is pulled into the housing of the steering unit. If the unit stalls or seems to bind reverse the switch and repeat. Install the two screws and nuts to retain the cable NUTS Cable End SCREWS Insertion of final screw 9

11 Maintenance 1.) Check battery connections periodically for signs of corrosion and clean as required. 2.) Apply a thin film of light lithium based grease to the steering cable as it enters the tilt tube of the outboard and all pivoting connections. 3.) Wash all saltwater off of steering cable end at outboard and grease after exposure to salt water. 4.) Check the pendant cord for any abrasions or loose wires periodically.
