1 Subject to approval (June 009) Curriculum for the Specialized Master s program in International and Monetary Economics MIME at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern and the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel (dated August, 009) The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern issues, on the basis of Article 9 paragraph letter k) of the Act dated September 5, 996, on the University (University Act, UniG), Article 8 of the Statutes dated December 7, 997, of the University of Bern (University Statutes, UniSt), of the regulations on Bachelor s and Master s programs and performance assessments at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern dated August 4, 006 (RSL WISO), and of the cooperation agreement with respect to the specialized Master s program in International and Monetary Economics (MIME) dated xx.xx.009, the following curriculum: I. General AIM AND SCOPE OF VALIDITY PARTNER UNIVERSITIES TITLE ADMISSION TO THE Art. This curriculum defines the specialized Master s program in International and Monetary Economics MIME at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern and the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel. It applies to all students studying for the Master s degree in International and Monetary Economics MIME (referred to below as the program ) at the University of Bern. The regulations on Bachelor s and Master s programs and performance assessments at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern dated August 4, 006 (RSL), take precedence. Art. If the program is completed successfully, the partner faculties will award the title of Master of Science in International and Monetary Economics, University of Bern in partnership with the University of Basel (MSc). Art. The general admission requirements for the program are governed by Articles 87 to 98 of the University Ordinance (UniV), and the procedure for enrollment is governed by Articles 44 to 5 of the University Statutes (UniSt). Students who have been awarded a Bachelor s degree by a Swiss university will be admitted to the program if they also meet the following additional criteria:

2 a b Students must demonstrate specific knowledge in the field of quantitative methods and economics. This can be done in one of the following two ways:. a Bachelor s degree awarded by a Swiss university in the discipline of Economics with a final grade of at least 5.0 (not rounded major or main subject grade),. a Bachelor s degree awarded by a Swiss university in a discipline related to Economics in terms of content or methodology, with a final grade of at least 5.0 (not rounded), and a result in the GRE or GMAT test in the highest category (a result only achieved by the top 0% of candidates). Admission to the Master s program in International and Monetary Economics requires evidence of adequate knowledge of English to B Level of the European Language Portfolio. Other applicants, or those who do not meet the requirements under paragraph letters a or b, may be accepted on the recommendation of the Governing Board at the request of the faculty. The Board recommends admission to the program to the University Board of Directors. STARTING THE Art. 4 The Master s program in International and Monetary Economics can be started in the autumn semester or the spring semester.

Program and credit points SCOPE OF THE Art. 5 The Master s program in International and Monetary Economics is worth 90 credit points (ECTS) with a standard period of study of three semesters of full-time study. With part-time study, the program will, accordingly, take longer. The credit points are calculated according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System ECTS. The number of credit points per course equates to the average actual volume of work for the students. As a rough guide, one credit point is awarded for 0 hours of work by an average student. The modules are listed in the Appendix together with details of the credit points that can be obtained. The courses are announced in the electronic course catalogue. APPENDIX TO THE CURRICULUM Art. 6 Together with the partner faculty, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences issues an Appendix to the curriculum that defines the structure of the program in modules. A module consists of one or more courses that are linked by the overall program objectives. The Appendix is approved by the faculty. The Appendix contains: a the structure of the program in modules, b the number of credit points required per module, c information about the method of assessing performance in the modules, d the compulsory courses within the modules. The Appendix to the curriculum must not introduce any selection criteria or procedures other than the provisions referred to in this curriculum. 4 Further details are announced in the electronic course catalogue. STRUCTURE AND PASS CRITERIA FOR THE Art. 7 The Master s program in International and Monetary Economics is made up of: a program modules amounting to 60 ECTS and b the Master s thesis amounting to 0 ECTS. The Master s program in International and Monetary Economics is deemed to have been passed if a total of 90 ECTS are obtained in accordance with the requirements of this curriculum.

4 III. Performance assessments BASIC PRINCIPLES JOINTLY OFFERED SEMINARS Art. 8 Credit points are obtained by a satisfactory performance in the study program. The form, conduct and evaluation of performance assessments and the awarding of credit points at the University of Basel are in accordance with the relevant provisions of the University of Basel. The form, conduct and evaluation of performance assessments at the University of Bern are in accordance with the regulations on Bachelor s and Master s programs and performance assessments at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern, dated August 4, 006. Art. 9 The jointly offered seminar is a compulsory part of the program. It is offered in alternate semesters by both partner faculties but is administered by Basel. Students must enroll in the seminar at the university hosting it. The following rules apply to this seminar. The work for the seminar comprises writing a seminar paper and presenting it. The work for the seminar is defined by the relevant lecturer and announced in the electronic course catalogue before the start of the course. The form, scope and timing of the seminar paper and any opportunities to revise it are announced at the start of the course. The work for the seminar is assessed as follows: a Assessment of the seminar paper by the lecturers responsible for the work concerned, who may belong to the University of Basel or the University of Bern, b Joint assessment of the presentation of the seminar paper by the lecturers of the Universities of Basel and Bern who take part in the seminar. 4 The overall assessment is the weighted average of the two partial assessments, graded on a numeric scale to one decimal digit. The weighting system is announced in advance. 5 It is not possible to repeat the seminar paper or presentation within the same seminar. RECOGNITION OF RESULTS OF STUDY AND EXAMINATIONS THE MASTER S THESIS MODULE Art. 0 Results of study or examinations obtained at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel as part of the Master s program in International and Monetary Economics will be automatically recognized by the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern and vice versa. The Examination Commission will decide on whether ECTS points and results obtained in a different study program or at a different university or institute of higher education can be recognized. Art. The Master s thesis worth 0 ECTS points is preferably written at the end of the Master s program. 4

5 The Master s thesis is supervised and assessed by a lecturer at Basel or Bern. They set the subject for the Master s thesis in consultation with the student. According to Article 50 of the RSL WISO regulations, a Master s thesis module that is not passed can be repeated once. MASTER S GRADE Art. The Master s grade is calculated as the average of all the graded assessments during the Master s program, weighted with the credit points. The Master s degree is awarded in recognition of overall performance with the following honors (Art. 6 para. RSL): 5.75 to 6.00 summa cum laude 5.5 to < 5.75 insigni cum laude 4.75 to< 5.5 magna cum laude 4.5 to < 4.75 cum laude 4 to < 4.5 rite IV. Completing the program COMPLETING THE MASTER S AND THE TITLE AWARDED MASTER S DEGREE DIPLOMA SUPPLEMENT Art. A student who has successfully completed the Master s program in International and Monetary Economics is awarded the title of Master of Science in International and Monetary Economics, University of Bern in partnership with the University of Basel (MSc). Students who fail to meet the requirements for successfully completing the Master s program in International and Monetary Economics, even after exhausting the opportunities to repeat elements of the program, are disqualified from the Master s program in International and Monetary Economics at the University of Basel and at the University of Bern. This is announced in a decree by the Dean. Art. 4 A student who has passed the Master s program receives a certificate from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Bern, signed by the Dean. Art. 5 The results obtained in the program are listed in the Diploma Supplement of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Bern, showing in detail the courses attended, the credit points and grades obtained for them, the title of the Master s thesis and the Master s grade. 5

6 VI. Responsibilities and right of appeal GOVERNING BOARD Art. 6 Responsibility for the overall supervision and coordination between the two partner faculties lies with a Governing Board for the Master s program in International and Monetary Economics jointly set up by both faculties. The Board will make recommendations to faculty committees, such as the Examination and Curriculum Commission, concerning decisions on matters such as admission issues, the range of courses, guidance and issues relating to the recognition of study achievements. Decrees are issued by official bodies of the relevant faculty. ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE HARDSHIP CASES Art. 7 The procedure is governed by the Act dated September 5, 996, on the University (UniG) and the law dated May, 989, on the administration of justice (VRPG). Objections can be raised within 0 days against decrees by the official bodies of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences to the Appeals Commission of the University of Bern (Art. 76 para. UniG). In the case of complaints about examination results, the claim of unreasonableness is not permitted (Art. 76 para. 4 UniG). Art. 8 In cases of hardship, the Examination Commission can grant exemption from certain regulations within this curriculum where good reason exists, provided this is within the remit of the Faculty. 6

7 VII. Transitional and final provisions AMENDMENTS TO THIS CURRICULUM AND ITS APPENDICES ENTRY INTO FORCE Art. 9 Amendments to the curriculum require approval from the University Board of Directors. The exception to this is amendments to the Appendices, which are within the remit of the Faculty Council. Art. 0 Following approval by the University Board of Directors, this curriculum enters into force on August, 009.
