THE CAMPAIGN FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES Since 1929, Catholic Charities has been a beacon for those who are in desperate need of help in the Washington metropolitan area. People with little hope seek support from Catholic Charities knowing they will not be turned away. As the region s leading provider of human services, with esteemed, national recognition and rigorous certification by the Council on Accreditation (COA), we light a path of hope for the most vulnerable among us. The lives of more than 100,000 women, men, and children of every background and faith are touched each year by one of the 65 programs provided by 800 staff members and thousands of volunteers. We challenge ourselves to say yes to everyone, often serving as the final safety net, providing vital services for people in the District of Columbia and surrounding Maryland counties of Montgomery, Prince George s, Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary s Counties. 1
Taking On the Most Challenging Cases of Poverty Sheltering the Homeless Every night, 1,800 warm beds and caring services are provided in our shelter and housing programs for women, men, and children without a home. Feeding the Hungry Last year, our SHARE Food Network distributed more than 118,000 affordable, nutritious food packages to thousands of families throughout our region. Our Southern Maryland Food Bank last year provided more than one million pounds of food to more than 30 local food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and group homes. Last year, we provided more than 5.5 million meals through our programs. Healing the Sick Catholic Charities medical and dental clinics as well as our Health Care Networks, volunteer physicians, dentists, and other health care professionals provide healing and preventative care to nearly 13,000 people who are uninsured, underinsured, or who do not have access to health care. Our Behavioral Health Services received the first 5-star rating from the DC Department of Behavioral Health, the highest rating ever awarded! Protecting Human Life and Dignity Catholic Charities provides essential, critical, life-affirming help to pregnant women and their children when they are alone and in need of emotional and financial support. Seeking Justice for All Last year, more than 5,800 people received civil or immigration legal advice and/or representation from our Legal Network and Immigration Legal Services programs. Training the Unemployed Each year, nearly 3,900 people receive job training, education, or referrals through one of our ten employment-related programs placing Catholic Charities among the largest employment-services providers in the Washington, DC region. Empowering Individuals with Disabilities at Every Stage of Life Each year, more than 600 children and adults living with developmental disabilities receive learning opportunities and community- and residence-based care while their caretakers and families receive vital support from our team of skilled staff members. Building Community Catholic Charities is building partnerships with 140 parishes and 83 schools across the Archdiocese of Washington to provide essential social services to individuals and families who seek help from parish communities. 2
Catholic Charities receives approximately 51 percent, an estimated $39 million, of its funding from public sources to deliver core services. Every year, the amount of money allocated by the government for this purpose decreases while the need and competition for available funds increases. Private philanthropy is needed to fill this growing gap to enable Catholic Charities to continue providing the quality of outstanding, vital services for which it is known. Catholic Charities strives to say yes to everyone who seeks our help. With passionate concern for the challenges facing our most vulnerable neighbors, we are embarking with vigor on The Campaign for Catholic Charities to raise unprecedented funds to support programs and initiatives for three essential priorities: Employment Service Expansion Catholic Charities Employment Program $15,000,000 Commitment to Service Excellence Investing in People and Programs $35,000,000 Endowment for the Future Continuing our Legacy of Service $25,000,000 This transformational, $75,000,000 capital and endowment fundraising effort will strengthen Catholic Charities outstanding work, accelerate our ability to meet the large and growing demand in the community, and offer help and hope to those who need it most. Combined, they will make a substantial impact on our community and the most vulnerable among us. To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus. Pope Francis, address during visit at the homeless shelter Dona Di Maria, 5/21/13 3
Employment Services Expansion $15,000,000 What Who Catholic Charities Employment Program Long-term and/or chronically unemployed, especially homeless men and women How Providing vocational assessment, life skills training, mentoring and coaching, paid work experience, job placement, support for job retention What s New Assisting many more people to make the transition to work, more job training partners, new mentoring program, united taskforce of employers Funding Opportunities Catholic Charities Employment Program Funding is not provided for employment specialists to assist clients served by the shelters Catholic Charities operates in partnership with the District of Columbia. Building on the foundation of its ten employment programs and services, Catholic Charities seeks to fund an innovative program to help those who are chronically unemployed. A continuum of services will be provided to include educational and vocational assessments, life skills and job training, paid work experience, job development and placement, and post-employment retention services in addition to case management services. 4
5
Commitment to Service Excellence $35,000,000 What Who How Investing in people and programs Everyone that comes to Catholic Charities in need, regardless of belief, background, or circumstance Securing increased resources above and beyond current funding levels and fee-for-service contracts What s New Enhancing staff to meet growing needs and to enrich service delivery; providing mental health services for the wider community as well as parish families; upgrading facilities Funding Opportunities Clients served by each Catholic Charities program would benefit from greater resources to enrich service delivery. Accordingly, Catholic Charities leadership has identified urgent funding opportunities, some of which are: Hire additional shelter case managers, employment specialists, and dental professionals Add psychological and emotional clinical services for battered women and their children Provide services to teen parents beyond the government eligibility age limit (22 years old) Launch counseling services for parish families and individuals Increase services available to women having crisis pregnancies Upgrade program facilities to improve accessibility, enhance care, and increase efficiency 6
7
Resources for the Future $25,000,000 What Increased Endowment Who Anyone seeking help from Catholic Charities now and in the future How Increasing the endowment What s New Providing $1,400,000+ of investment income to fund central services and direct more funding to delivering programs Catholic Charities vision of providing enhanced, expanded services to its clients for generations to follow can only be realized by building our reserves. With a $15 million corpus as of March 31, 2014, the Catholic Charities endowment is undercapitalized based on the size and scope of the agency. While it is the mission of a human services organization to invest in the lives of others, it is only a fully-funded endowment that can guarantee long-term financial health. Partnering Together on a Path to Success We ask you to join us in supporting our vision to protect and care for people who are poor and vulnerable, to enhance job training, and to shine a light on a brighter future for the people who need us the most. Whether it is shelter for the homeless, education and training for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, medical and dental care for the uninsured, support for unborn babies and their mothers, mental health care, and legal aid for foreign-born individuals, Catholic Charities serves our diverse community with unparalleled compassion and a commitment to excellence. We invite you to make an extraordinary investment in Catholic Charities by courageously answering the call to serve those in need. 8
