1 St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church Peyton Drive, Chino Hills, CA (909) FAX (909) Office Hours: Monday - Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. info@sptacc.org Web site: sptacc.org PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ. A Message of Hope Amidst Surge Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Peace and well-being to you and your families. As we begin this new year 2022, please join me in hope and gratitude to God almighty for all the blessings received last year. At the same time, we implore God s providence and blessings upon us as we journey into the New Year. Like you, after almost two years of challenges with the pandemic, I have very much looked forward to a return to normal. But instead, we find ourselves in the midst of another COVID spike, due to the Omicron variant. We are weary and tired of the many difficult impacts of this virus; its threat to our health, its impact on our work, our daily routine and our children s education. Still, we must resist the temptation to despair, indifference, or carelessness. God continues to walk with us through this darkness and if we keep the light of hope in our hearts and minds, we will recognize His loving presence. In these days, it is very important for us all to continue to practice the good habits we have learned during the pandemic washing our hands frequently, wearing a mask indoors and staying home and away from others if we feel symptoms. If you have not been vaccinated yet, you can still do it anytime. An important fact that has emerged during this surge is that those who are fully vaccinated are experiencing less symptoms when they are infected. Those who are hospitalized are primarily those who are not vaccinated. Finally, with the increase in COVID cases and the normal flu season occurring, it is very important that if we feel sick, we get tested as soon as possible. Look for the many testing sites and resources in your community. How do we continue to respond to this as people of faith? With trust in our God, and with a spirit of diligence and compassion for the health and wellbeing of our brothers and sisters around us. Our churches remain open, and we can gather together at the table of the Lord to receive the Bread of Life, which sustains us and brings us to a greater communion with God and one another. Let us pray especially for those who are seriously ill and for the health care workers and service providers who tend to their needs every day. The normal that we have been waiting for, is not here yet, so we remain ever faithful and self-giving in the way that we live each day, trusting in God s providence and mercy. You remain in my heart and prayers. Let s continue to pray for one another. May Almighty God always bless you and keep you. Bishop Alberto Rojas

11 January 23, 2022 Page 11 GOD S LAW Scripture has always held God s law to be the path to human happiness. In today s first reading, Ezra the priest reads the scroll of the law to the people returned from exile. They weep then are joyful. Israel s relationship with God had always been defined by how they kept and lived God s law. The author of Psalm 96 likewise praises the law of God as the source of wisdom, joy and enlightenment, purity and justice. In his advice to the bickering Corinthians, Paul points out that, just as God has made all parts of a human body essential for the health of the whole, living as Christ s body requires that each member be recognized as necessary for the good of all. Finally, in Luke s Gospel Jesus claims that the Spirit is sending him to relieve human suffering. Like Ezra, he is reading from a scroll, proclaiming God s law of mercy to those in need. Copyright J. 12 Evangelization & Faith Page 12 ho of us wouldn t like a second W chance, a new beginning, especially if we have made mistakes over the course of our lives? Two of today s readings speak of new beginnings in the relationship between God and his chosen people. In the first reading, Nehemiah has just completed reconstruction of the city s defensive wall and has reorganized the priests for resumption of Temple worship. Now it is time to bring the people into the process. So, with all the people gathered together, Nehemiah and Ezra, the scribe, proclaim and explain the book of the Law to them. Because it is a new beginning after Israel s release from exile, Nehemiah and Ezra exhort the people to celebrate: The joy of the Lord must be your strength. Luke s Gospel is a recounting of the beginning of Jesus public ministry. Jesus returns in the power of the Holy Spirit to Nazareth and stands up in the synagogue to read from a passage he selects from the prophet Isaiah. In it, Isaiah declares that the Spirit of the Lord has commissioned him to announce good news to the poor, news of release from captivity, recovery of sight for the blind, liberty to the oppressed all in all, a year of the Lord s favor, that is, the Old Testament celebration of what was called the Year of Jubilee. Jesus applies that passage to himself. At the start of his own ministry, he also announces a new beginning for Israel. He is the one who will release prisoners from captivity to JUBILEE: A New Beginning sin, open the eyes of faith, deliver those under demonic oppression, and complete the restorations that the Jubilee Year stands for. But it isn t just the people of Jesus time who experience the newness. The Holy Spirit continues that work in the Body of Christ, the Church, as Paul describes in the second reading from 1 Corinthians. The Spirit s gifts are freely bestowed on the members of the Church and are exercised in a spirit of unity, so that there may be no discord in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. These are ministry gifts, whose function is to continue in the body the same liberating work of Jesus. Even after twenty centuries, the year of Jubilee is only beginning. ISCUSSION: Please watch this D week's Opening the Word video at sptacc.formed.org In the Gospel reading, Jesus announces the fulfillment of the Isaiah passage. He comes to release us from slavery to sin and from spiritual debts we cannot repay. Has there been a time in your life when someone paid a debt for you? Perhaps it was a financial debt. Or maybe it was simply someone doing something for you that you could not do on your own. How can you express more gratitude to God for paying the debt of your sins on the cross? When Isaiah says in prophecy that the Holy Spirit will send someone to bring good news to the poor and to the captives, he is not talking only about people who are below the financial poverty level or those locked up in a jail. He is talking about a kind of spiritual poverty awareness that our entire lives are completely dependent on God. And he is talking about those who are in bondage to sin and recognize that only God can liberate them from their sinful ways RAYER: Recall Jesus words from P today s Gospel reading about coming to proclaim liberty to the captives. Prayerfully ask Jesus to show you an area of your life where you are in slavery to sin and in need of the release, healing, and relief from oppression that he offers. ESOLUTION: Recognizing our R spiritual poverty our complete dependence on God talk to Jesus about areas where you need to be released and ask him what you can do to seek healing during the week. Ask for his help in this area. Reflections reprinted here with permission from Augustine Institute. We encourage you to take notes as you reflect on this week readings / homily
