1 Κλασσική εποχή π.χ. Η ΣΥΜΜΑΧΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΔΗΛΟΥ
2 Η Αθήνα εξελίχθηκε σε μεγάλη ναυτική δύναμη και τέθηκε επικεφαλής πολλών ελληνικών πόλεων, ιδρύοντας την Α Αθηναϊκή Συμμαχία (478/7 π.χ.) Έδρα της συμμαχίας ορίστηκε η Δήλος, όπου βρισκόταν το συμμαχικό ταμείο. Τα μέλη της συμμαχίας είχαν τουλάχιστον στην αρχή ίδια δικαιώματα και υποχρεώσεις. Η συμμετοχή των πόλεων στο ταμείο της συμμαχίας (φόρος) καθορίζονταν σε πλοία ή χρήματα.

7 Η ΑΘΗΝΑ χρησιμοποίησε την συμμαχία ως μέσο επικράτησης απέναντι στους Πέρσες και τους υπόλοιπους Έλληνες και ως μέσο κυριαρχίας απέναντι στους ίδιους τους συμμάχους. Οι Έλληνες που δεν συμμετείχαν στην συμμαχία δεν εκδήλωσαν φανερά την αντίθεσή τους στην αύξηση της δύναμης των Αθηναίων, ούτε καν η Σπάρτη.
8 Ο ΚΙΜΩΝ Ο Κίμων επικεφαλής των αριστοκρατικών ήταν υπέρ της συνεργασίας με την Σπάρτη. Ως αρχιστράτηγος της συμμαχίας στερέωσε την αθηναϊκή δύναμη και αντιμετώπισε τους Πέρσες (----> νίκη στις εκβολές του Ευρυμέδοντος ποταμού, στις ακτές της Μικράς Ασίας το 476 π.χ.) Όμως η φιλολακωνική πολιτική του, είχε ως συνέπεια την πολιτική του ήττα και την διακοπή των φιλικών σχέσεων μεταξύ Αθήνας και Σπάρτης.

11 Μετά την επικράτηση των Δημοκρατικών ο Κίμων εξοστρακίστηκε το 461 π.χ. για 10 χρόνια από την Αθήνα. Την εξουσία ανέλαβαν οι Δημοκρατικοί με αρχηγό τον Εφιάλτη, ο οποίος αργότερα δολοφονήθηκε και την αρχηγία των Δημοκρατικών ανέλαβε ο ΠΕΡΙΚΛΗΣ.

13 Η Αθήνα συνέχισε να επεκτείνει την συμμαχία μεταξύ των Ελλήνων και επιβλήθηκε δυναμικά μετατρέποντας την συμμαχία σε ΗΓΕΜΟΝΙΑ. Έτσι μεταφέρθηκε το ταμείο της συμμαχίας από την Δήλο στην Αθήνα (454 π.χ.) Σε όσες πόλεις θέλησαν να αποχωρήσουν από την συμμαχία επιβλήθηκε με στρατιωτικά μέσα η παραμονή τους. (αποστασία της Μυτιλήνης) Ο Κίμων επέστρεψε στην Αθήνα το 451 π.χ. και ανέλαβε εκ νέου τα ηνία της πόλης.
14 Ο Κίμων υπέγραψε 5ετή ανακωχή με την Σπάρτη και στράφηκε εναντίον των Περσών. Πέθανε κατά την πολιορκία του Κιτίου το 450 π.χ. Ο θάνατός του κρατήθηκε μυστικός, και έναν χρόνο αργότερα ο αθηναϊκός στόλος νίκησε τον περσικό στη Σαλαμίνα της Κύπρου. Έτσι γράφτηκε το «και νεκρός ενίκα» Ακολούθησε η υπογραφή ειρήνης με τους Πέρσες, η οποία ονομάσθηκε «Ειρήνη του Καλλία». Οι Πέρσες αναγκάσθηκαν να αναγνωρίσουν την ανεξαρτησία των ελληνικών πόλεων της Μικράς Ασίας.
