Daily Prayer is a publication of Shadyside Presbyterian Church Revised Common Lectionary copyright 1992 Consultation on Common Texts. Used by permission. 2

Daily Prayer Thank you for joining Shadyside Presbyterian Church in our ninth year of Daily Prayer. Our congregation uses this daily Bible reading and journaling to encourage each other to read and pray the Bible together all week long. Daily Prayer helps keep us on the same page, responding to God s same life-giving Word with our daily lives. Praying the Scriptures: Daily prayer is something different from Bible study. A devotional, rather than a strictly scholarly approach to the Bible, requires that we engage not only our minds, but our hearts and bodies as well. Following a lectionary eliminates the need for us to choose a text and doesn t allow us to avoid less familiar, more troublesome, sections of the Bible. Prayerful listening to scripture also calls for a response. Many people find that keeping a written journal, responding to a word or phrase from one of the day s readings, helps focus their conversation with God. One Year s Readings: The readings presented in this booklet are deliberately short; they can be read and reflected on in less than thirty minutes. In this particular lectionary reading plan, we read the New Testament through once every year, while the Old Testament readings extend over a two-year period. The Psalms: The Psalms are the collected prayers of the Bible and have a special place in Daily Prayer. Instead of the traditional and very limited list of Psalms included in the Revised Common Lectionary, we at Shadyside choose to read them in their Biblical order from Psalm 1 straight through Psalm 150. You will notice that the sequential order of our Psalm readings is interrupted from time to time on the special holy days of the church. We return to the traditional Psalms assigned to these special days. For example, it seems important to read Psalm 22, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? on Good. Daily Prayer in Corporate Worship: On s each week from September through May, our pastors preach at our 7:00 p.m. vespers services from one of the texts assigned for that day. It has been a wonderful way to interact together in worship around what we have been reading. In Advent and Lent, however, our vespers services are organized around specific themes appropriate to each church season. Our task force invites you to join us in this daily discipline. We will be interested to hear your comments about incorporating this ancient practice into your daily life for our next edition to be published for Leslie Bake, Sara & Ted Brooke, Anne Camp, Peggy Heely, Tricia McGough, Boyd Murray, and Peter Bodnar, staff resource 3

Notes for New Readers: There s an App for This, Too: Those of you who travel often or who simply prefer to receive these readings on your mobile device or computer every morning will want to know that you can have the readings ed or podcast automatically via RSS feed from (Note that the editors of the RSS feed use the traditional, more limited, approach to the Psalms, but the other readings are the same.) Parentheses: In order to keep the readings brief, some portions of scripture are omitted. Occasionally, some of these omitted verses are put back in as optional. Parentheses indicate the optional verses. They make the readings longer than normal, but were deemed too important to eliminate altogether. Verse Divisions: Some of our faithful readers have said they were unfamiliar with the use of a and b with Bible verses. The division of our Bible into verses dates back to the 16th century and does not always fall where modern readers would choose. Adding a or b to a verse number can sometimes avoid this awkwardness. More Than One Chapter: The citation for a reading that extends over more than one chapter can look confusing. The reading of Hosea 1:1-2:1 envisions that you will begin reading at verse 1 of the first chapter of Hosea and continue reading through verse 1 of the second chapter. In order to help you identify the fact that you are to read through the end of chapter one and on into chapter two, we have inserted a space before the new chapter number. A counter example is Esther 2:5-8,15-23 where the comma indicates some omitted verses, but all the verses are in chapter two. You can visually compare this again with the extra space inserted in Esther 3:1-4:3, where the reading begins in chapter three and continues into chapter four. 4

An Order for Morning Prayer Call to Worship Lamentations 3:22-23 The Lord s unfailing love and mercy never cease, They are new every morning, and sure as the sunrise. Prayer of Adoration Lord God, as this morning is new, so are your mercies. Open my eyes to see and my lips to praise. Show me my sin that I may receive your grace, repent, and turn to you. Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love. As I read your word, reveal yourself to me. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of salvation; for you I wait all day long. Morning Psalm(s) for the Day Lectionary Readings for the Day Prayers Of Thanksgiving Of Intercession Hymn Benediction Eternal God, you call us to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give me faith to go out with courage, not knowing where I go, but only that your hand is leading me, and your love is supporting me, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 5

An Order for Evening Prayer Call to Worship 2 Corinthians 4:6 God who said, Out of darkness the light shall shine! is the same God who made light shine in our hearts to bring us the knowledge of God s glory shining in the face of Jesus Christ. Prayer of Confession O God, our Creator, by whose mercy and might the world turns safely into darkness and returns again to light; I give into your hands my unfinished tasks, my unsolved problems, and my unfulfilled hopes, all these are yours even as I am yours. Where I have turned from you, forgive me and lead me home again. Where others have wronged me, strengthen me to forgive. Comfort and protect me in the night hours; fill me with your peace as I rest in you. Amen. Evening Psalm(s) of the Day Prayers Of Thanksgiving Of Intercession Hymn Benediction As you have made this day, O God, you also make the night. Come upon me with quietness and still my soul, that I may listen for the whisper of your Spirit and be attentive to your nearness in my dreams. Empower me to rise again in new life to proclaim your praise, and show Christ to the world, for he reigns forever and ever. Amen. 6
