1 military Commissioned when he graduated from West Point in June of 1959, Pete s first three years while technically on active duty were spent as a fulltime student in England at Oxford University. In the fall of 1962, having completed his tenure as a Rhodes Scholar, Pete returned to the United States to begin his military career in earnest. After finishing Infantry, Parachute and Ranger training, Pete was posted to the 82 nd Airborne Division where he commanded a Rifle Company. Following further training, including Vietnamese language school, he went to Vietnam, first as Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese 1 st Airborne Battalion, and subsequently working in the Pacification Program. Later he taught at the Military Academy, studied for a PhD at Princeton University, worked on the Task Force charged to adapt the Army to a Volunteer status, following the decision by the Congress to do away with the military draft, and was selected as a White House Fellow. The final decade of Pete s military career witnessed his ascension through the ranks to become a General Officer. He enjoyed a series of commands: a Battalion in Korea; a Brigade at Fort Ord, followed by assignment as Assistant Division Commander of the 7 th Infantry Division. Then, another Brigade command this one in the 101 st Airborne Division (Air Assault) followed by assignment as the Division Chief of Staff. One of the intriguing ones relates to his recurring interest in, and involvement with, the process of change. The Army as an institution is constantly evolving. Beginning as a young officer, and continuing on today, Pete has been alert to identifying areas where change is called for, and active in developing ways to promote it Freedom to Fail Broadened the understanding of subtle distortions in the Army s Officer Efficiency Report process.
