Social Media Statistics FACEBOOK Used by 10% of the world s population More than 900 million active users Accessed by more than 200 million people on their mobile devices TWITTER:- 140 million users 340 million tweets per day Instagram:- 100 million Monthly Active Users 45 million Photos Per Day LINKED IN:- 50 million monthly users (American Nurses Association, 2012; Lukes, 2010; Spector & Kappel, 2012; Springer, 2012)
What Is Patient Privacy Not just about closing the curtains Differs to confidentiality Fundamental to the nurse-patient relationship (Cronquist & Spector, 2011; Spector & Kappel, 2012)
Do Nurses Breach Patient Privacy 2012 Survey:- On Social Media 27% of nurses say they use social media to share stories about working life 41% of nurses say colleagues from their ward / team have used social media inappropriately 32% of these posts contained information about patients 12% contained photographs of patients (Ford, 2012)
Why Are These Statistics So High? How we communicate has changed Instant access No names = no problem right? Privacy setting on social media give false sense of security (Hillman & Watson, 2012; Spector & Kappel, 2012)
Personal Consequences Employment current and future Complaints to registering body (Spector & Kappel, 2012; Springer, 2012)
Legal Consequences Deleting the post isn t enough Can constitute publishing State / Federal / Common laws could be violated (Hader & Brown, 2010; Spector & Kappel, 2012)
Loss Of Patient Trust Currently, nurses are one of the most trusted and ethical professions Patients may fear sharing what may be crucial information Poorer patient outcomes (Englund et al., 2012Spector & Kappel, 2012)
Consequences To Nursing Posts on social media directly reflect on nurses professionalism It has happened enough to give responsible, caring hospital workers a bad name Loss of public support (eg disputes) (Allen, 2013; Englund et al., 2012; Popkin, 2010; Spector & Kappel, 2012; Springer, 2012)
Self-Regulation We need clear definition of what is acceptable and what is not We need education on how to respond to inappropriate posts without fear of retribution Non-reporting of these posts can also lead to investigations by registering boards. (Anderson, 2012; NCSBN, 2011; Spector & Kappel, 2012; Springer, 2012)
Self-Regulation It s Not Easy Set the tone It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage so rare Mark Twain It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends." - JK Rowlings (Anderson, 2012; NCSBN, 2011; Spector & Kappel, 2012; Springer, 2012)
