4 Stair designing Detail design When the string profile continues in the intermediate landing both parts are cut in an angle and butt welded together. A bolted overlapped joint or a joint using extra flat bars can also be used. Against a beam the stair is usually attached by means of a flat bar welded to the string profile. Alternatively it can be bolted using an L-profile. The string profiles are put straight on top of the load bearing structure. Certain guiding principles apply when a stair case is built. The height and the depth of the steps should be equal in all stretchers. The height should not exceed 200 mm and the length of the stair stretchers should not be more than steps. The stair should be made as narrow as possible, but with the recommendations in national standards (BBR) taken into consideration. A stair with the width of 60 cm is easy to walk in, with 80 cm width there are no problems to carry a toolbox and with the width increased to 90 cm it is easy for two people to pass each other. The size of the intermediate landing is more decisive of the maximum size of an object transported in the stair than the width of the stair. If the stair is mounted directly on a floor the string profile is bolted to the floor. This is made by means of a flat bar or L-profile welded to the string profile. When a stair hits a lower intermediate landing it is suitable to put the first step in the same level as the landing. This way the stair does not have to overlap the landing. If there is a lot of space below the landing an L- or U-shaped beam can be fixed to the wall using expanders and then the stair with the landing can be put on top. If the strength of the string profile is used to the maximum the cut where it is connected needs reinforcement. A stiffener with the same thickness as the flange of the beam is butt welded to the flange and fillet welded to the waist. 4
5 Cross-grooving 7mm Cross-grooving for safety All flooring and step profiles that have grooves on the walking surface are cross-grooved except for step SFT 110/26. Cross-grooving, which is designated with an R, increases safety for pedestrians. When pedestrians tread on the profile, the soles of their shoes sink into the 7 mm wide cross-grooving which provides a grip and thus reduces the risk of slipping. Floor- and step profiles with cross-groving less than 7 mm are not recommended! 7mm Protecting profiles during installation Untreated profiles have a high quality finish. In order to maintain this, it is appropriate to protect the flooring profiles during installation and the building stage. The laying should be planned with other activities on site in mind. If it is important to have a very high quality finish, the profiles should be protected against the following: Dirt and dust. Cover the flooring with building foil or paper immediately after it has been laid. This protects the floor and facilitates cleaning work. Welding spray. Cover the area around the work place with masonite, for example. Welding spray causes small stains that are difficult to remove. Concrete and mortar splashes. Marks can be prevented by covering the flooring. Both materials are strongly alkaline and can cause discoloration to the metal. Storage 3 points to consider Do not open the plastic packaging unnecessarily. One cubic metre of packaged flooring profiles is equivalent to m 2 of floor and weighs approximately 500 kg. In order to maintain the high finish that the profiles have on delivery, the person responsible for the storage should keep three things in mind when storing the profiles: 1. Keep them dry. Corrosion never occurs without water. The product is always dry on delivery. 2. Keep them covered. Keep the covering on as long as possible. This prevents both water and dirt from getting to the profiles. 3. Keep them ventilated. Ventilate where possible. Air helps to keep the profiles dry and looking good. 5
6 Step profiles Stairs in aluminium are an important part of a complete flooring system a system with floor, steps and strings that is smart, strong and does not rust. Nomenclature It is useful to be familiar with the following terms when discussing stairs: 1. The rise of the steps should be the same in each flight of stairs and preferably the same for all flights in the staircase. 2. The tread is the horizontal plane of the stairs. The steps should be well lit and easy to keep clean. 3. The nosing is the front edge of the tread. This should not be sharp, but neither should it be too rounded. 4. The going is the horizontal distance from nosing to nosing. The treads overlap one another in steep staircases and ladders. The overlap is not included in the depth of tread 5. The riser is the perpendicular surface between two treads that can be completely or partially open. 6. The strings are the cantilever beams which together with the treads form a flight of stairs. These provide a support for the steps between landings. The steps and handrails are fixed into the strings. 7. The run of a step is the length of a tread, i.e. the distance between the insides of the strings. This dimension is often called the width of a staircase. Standards Most building regulations require staircases and ramps to be designed so that people can use them with safety. For homes etc., staircases and ramps should permit the safe passage of stretchers. If there is no lift in the building, the staircase must be at least 1.2 m wide. Staircases should be terminated laterally against restraining walls or provided with handrails. The incline and length of a staircase between the height and depth of the stairs should be considered at the design stage. The going in staircases should be at least 0.25 metres, measured in the walking line. Staircases and ramps used by children must be designed with safety in mind. The openings between treads should be a maximum of 100 mm. Staircases and ramps with a drop of more than 0.5 metres should have handrails on both sides. Staircases wider than 2.5 metres should be divided by having balustrades or handrails in two or more runs. Step profiles Step and string profiles are stocked as part of the Sapa Flooring System as described below. Together with balustrades, staircases can be built for virtually any purpose. Step profiles, with the exception of SFT 110/26, are cross-grooved. The largest run for profiles is calculated from a loading requirement of 5 kn/m 2 over the whole surface. Alternatively, the steps should withstand a point load of 1.5 kn in the centre. The deflection has been limited to the run/200. Lengths of 6500 mm are stocked. The step profiles can be cut to a specific length as required. The tolerance is +0/-3 mm. For production orders SAPA s normal tolerances apply unless otherwise agreed. 9 Mounting accessories Accessories There is a range of accessories for connecting and installing flooring profiles. Accessories are sold individually. Gusset Used when mounting staircases and ladders. Step profiles SFG 250/40 and SFT 250/60 are mounted on the gusset with hexagonheaded bolts M8 x 22, which fit into the profile s race groove. The gusset is pre-drilled. Item No. SFM Bolt M8 Used when fixing profiles SFT 110/26, SFT 185/32 and SFT 250/32, for the purpose of attaching steps to strings. The bolt M8 with nut and washer is also used for mounting profiles SFG 250/40 and SFT 250/60 on gusset SFM Size: M8 x 22, stainless. Item Nos. SFM bolt SFM nut, washer Installing step profiles For each step profile there is a suitable string. The steps are mounted directly into the strings. A hole is made using the step s race groove (in the lower edge of the step profile) as a template. Fit with M8 bolts. These bolts, which should be stainless, are knocked in with a hammer until the threads get a grip. Then they are screwed home. There are advantages in welding the steps to the strings. To mount the SFG 250/40 profile as a step in a staircase construction a gusset is used. The gusset is mounted in the strings with M10 bolts. The step is then secured to the gusset with M8 bolts. A gusset can also be used for SFT 250/60. The riser profile extends the step by 50 mm and reduces the opening by 70 mm. Simultaneously it prevents dirt and loose objects from falling down between the stairs. The riser profile is mounted on the rear edge of the step profiles with bolts. Alternatively it can be welded in place. The staircase is simply mounted at the top and bottom with an angle iron that can either be secured with bolts or welded in position. 9
10 Industrial railings in aluminium Simple assembly no welding needed Sa pa railings are manufactured as finished components for rapid, safe and simple installation on site with every conceivable possibility for adaptations to specific needs and circumstances. Any adjustment cutting necessary is performed on the site. No welding all parts are secured with rivets or bolts. 10
11 Requirements and functions Standard requirements and functions Standard requirements We here show the Swedish requirements (BBR and BKR) for hand railings. When used in other countries, please check the requirements in the current country. BBR and BKR present the general requirements of the strength and stiffness of railings. The main requirements are shown here. For detailed requirements see BKR and BBR. The total height of the railing: Minimum 1100 mm where a risk of falling exist, otherwise 900 mm. Load requirements: The railing must bear a load of 0.8 kn/m horizontally in the top of the railing where crowding is expected, in other respects 0.4 kn/m. Intermediate rail shall be mounted on the whole railing on half its height. Kick plate should exist where there is an opening between the landing and either a wall or a floor that are greater than 50 mm. The height of the kick plate must be at minimum 100 mm above floor level. The aluminium railing fulfil these requirements. The railing is intended to be used in industrial environments, stairs, shielding between streets and walkways. The railing can be provided with different fillers. Included parts Railing 40 and 80 All parts are extruded in aluminium (SS-EN AW 6063-T6), the same alloy as the step profiles. They are clear anodised minimum 15 microns. 14 Assembly instructions, Railings 40 and 80 Fixing posts in concrete Fixing type 19/19 B The embedment length in a recess must be approx. 150 mm and the recess approx. 100x100x200 mm. The embedment length in the ground must be approx. 300 mm. The base must be at least Ø 200x800 mm. Post parts are delivered dipped in asphalt for grouting into concrete. Fixing type 22, studs Studs, 30x30, Ø 30 mm (40x40, Ø 35 mm) of aluminium or galvanized steel are grouted into a recess or drilled hole Ø 35 mm (Ø 40 mm). The post is fixed to the studs with stop screws or selftapping screws. Fixing against concrete Fixing type 21/21 B, bracket Drill holes in the concrete at intervals of 82 mm (92 mm) in accordance with the expander manufacturer s instructions. Determine the height. Secure the bracket and insert the post at the correct height. Drill and tighten bolts. Align with wedges. Fixing type 24, post with foot plate Drill holes in the concrete at intervals of 76 mm (104 mm) in accordance with the expander manufacturer s instructions. Secure the foot plate to the floor and align it with wedges. NOTE! Drain hole Concrete in post Fixing against steel Fixing type 22, studs Fix the post with stop screws or self-tapping screws to steel studs 30x30 mm (40x40 mm) which are welded to the girder. Insulate the studs with tape or zinc primer (approx. 100 μm). Fixing type 24, post with foot plate Drill holes with a diameter of 12 mm at intervals of 76 mm (104 mm) in the steel girder. Bolt the upright post with insulated foot plate to the steel girder and align with wedges. Fixing type 27. Bracket against girder (only railing 40) Drill holes with a diameter of 12 mm at intervals of 82 mm in the steel girder. Secure the post to the steel girder with a bracket. Adjust the post height before tightening the bracket. Fitting the handrails Delivered undrilled in lengths of 5900 mm. Normal fixing: place the handrail in the milled cradle. Drill Ø 5 mm holes in the handrail through the predrilled holes in the post. Rivet the handrail to the posts with 4 pop rivets. Make sure that contact between handrail and post is sufficiently good when riveting. Adjustable top or inclined milled cradle Used in staircases and elsewhere. The erection procedure is the same as for normal fixing in a milled cradle. Joining of pipes This is done with a coupler which is fitted with the opening downwards. The coupler is riveted to one of the pipes with at least two pop rivets and is permitted to run freely in the other (see illustration) to absorb temperature movements. Bear in mind that pipes or pipe parts must extend over at least two posts. Leave a space of 6-12 mm between the pipes, adapting the distance to the temperature at assembly. (When installing in an indoor location with uniform temperature no thermal expansion joint is needed. Intermediate rail Delivered undrilled in lengths of 5900 mm. The intermediate rail is secured to the post, which has pre-drilled Ø 5,4 mm holes, with self-tapping screws. Drill Ø 5 mm holes in the intermediate rail throug the predrilled holes in the bracket. Join the intermediate rail and bracket together with two pop rivets. Make sure that there is good contact between the bracket and intermediate rail. Joining of intermediate rails is performed in the same way as joining of handrails. If the intermediate rail is likely to be exposed to particularly great stresses two brackets per post should be used for pipes Ø 35 mm. For pipes with a diameter of 45 mm clamps are used which surround the pipe and riveting is not necessary. Rivet: length 12 mm Rivet: length 16 mm Clamp Rivet: length 12 mm 6-12 mm outdoors 14
15 Rail terminations Must be made very carefully to ensure that the finished railing does not have any sharp edges or can cause injury in some other way. End termination A/C (end plug) Handrails and intermediate rails are terminated with end plugs. Ends A and C are struck into the end of the pipe with a soft mallet and secured if necessary with a pop rivet. End termination B (pipe bends/couplers) The railing is terminated with two pipe bends and a tapered transition against the intermediate rail. Note that transition Ø 45 - Ø 35 mm (Ø 55 - Ø 45) acts as coupler and must be riveted with two rivets to each intermediate rail and 90 pipe band. Make sure that the joint is tight. Paling sections Sort out the sections on the basis of any angles and special lengths in accordance with the directions on the construction drawing. Paling sections for Sapa railings are delivered with surplus lengths. Measure the distance between the posts. Adjust the top/bottom bar of the paling section. Make sure that the first and last pale come at the same distance from the posts. Push a paling section lock into each end of the top bars and bottom bars of the paling sections. Lift the section in between the posts and push the locks into the corresponding holes in the post. Then secure the locks with rivets. 180 pipe bend In staircases the handrail can be terminated with 180 pipe bend (see sketch). The bend is attached to the lowermost railing post by bolting the disk to the post. Cut the bend to the correct length and pass it over the disk. Drill Ø 5 mm holes simultaneously through the bend and the disk. Then rivet the bend to the top of the post. Be careful where the joint is placed! Pedestrian gate Pedestrian gates for Sapa Aluminium Ralings have a standard width of 850 mm. The distance between the gate posts must be 880 mm = ± 5 mm. The gates are delivered with single-acting spring hinges and stops. Can be supplemented with fittings for a padlock or other types of locks. Hinges are bolted to the railing posts. Drill and tap M5 holes for the stainless bolts supplied with the gate. Disk Rivet: length 12 mm 880 standard Max 1000 A detaled assembly instruction are enclosed all deliveries from Sapa. 15
