Julie Davis Lutz, Ph.D. Chief Operating Officer 201 Sunrise Highway Patchogue, NY Phone: (631) Fax: (631) MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: Eastern Suffolk BOCES Staff Julie Davis Lutz, Ph.D. DATE: August 31, 2016 RE: School Opening As the summer comes to an end, I find myself somewhat reflective. I hope that everyone has had an opportunity this summer to refuel and prepare for another school year. What we do is vitally important, and requires our passion and our focus. Both are easier to achieve when we take care of ourselves. Education is one of life s most important professions. Everything that we do at ESBOCES supports educational opportunities in this region. Whether your job is to stand in front of a classroom, provide related services, assist instruction in a support role, care for students health and safety, maintain our infrastructure, ensure that our business operations are functioning, provide transportation for students, deliver professional development to improve educational or other practices, support technology, provide leadership to programs, buildings or departments; or perform one of the many other tasks that it takes to keep us functioning, I hope that none of us ever loses sight of the fact that what we do is critically important work. This is an important year for the agency. We will be working throughout the year to evaluate where we are and where we are going with regard to our strategic planning process. Eastern Suffolk BOCES was the first educational service agency to ever receive accreditation from the Middles States Association of Colleges and Schools. We have maintained our accreditation over the years, and during this school year we will be going through the process of reaccreditation for the second time. We look forward to the opportunity to look at the work we do with a critical eye, and make adjustments to our Strategic Plan moving forward. Eastern Suffolk BOCES has the largest Board in New York State, and we have one of the most supportive Boards. Due to one retirement and one vacancy this past year, we are happy to welcome two new Board Members. Joining our Board are Mr. Christopher Cariello, from the Little Flower Union Free School District; and Mrs. Linda Goldsmith, from the Oysterponds Union Free School District. Chef Cariello is a proud graduate of our Culinary Arts Program, and a successful restaurant owner on the east end. Mrs. Goldsmith worked for the agency many years ago, and brings with her many years of school board service in the Oysterponds School
Page 2 District. They have both received an initial orientation to the agency and toured several of our buildings. We look forward to working with them and the rest of the Board during the upcoming school year. The Operations and Maintenance Department staff have been working hard all summer to update and revamp our buildings. I am certain that you will notice the fruit of their labors. One of the projects that was a priority this summer was major renovations in the Transitional Services Program (TSP) at the Brookhaven Learning Center to create an atmosphere that mimics a work environment for the students in that program. After many requests, we have decided to reinitiate the ESBOCES tours for employees. We are a geographically and programmatically diverse agency. Understanding everything that we do is a monumental task. At the same time, our greatest resource is you, our staff, so having staff understand the agency is important. In an effort to assist with that goal, we will offer several opportunities this school year for employees to take a tour of a sampling of our programs to learn about the agency, and enjoy a meal prepared by our culinary arts students. Stay tuned for information early in the fall explaining how to participate in one of these tours. In an effort to encourage you to talk about ESBOCES, we are happy to provide you with a conversation piece. The Career and Technical Education Program is in the process of distributing phone wallets with a removable microfiber cloth to all ESBOCES staff. This is a unique marketing tool for people to notice our logo and ask questions, providing an opportunity for each staff member to share information about our programs, and to act as promoters for the agency. This year, our calendar allows us to return to a traditional Superintendent s Conference Day on Election Day (November 8). Instructional buildings will be planning events in consultation with their departments. Central office staff will again have the opportunity for a centralized staff development day. Watch for additional information about that day after the school year begins. As you may be aware, for many years, leadership in the agency has been involved in regional advocacy related to public education. This year, for the first time, we are going to offer an opportunity for various stakeholders to become more involved by joining a Community Legislation Committee. The committee, which will be facilitated by William Miller, our Board Vice President, will meet monthly. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center in Bellport. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please contact my office at Unfortunately, Suffolk County has discontinued the funding for the Juvenile Day Reporting Center (JDRC) Program. This resulted in the closure of the JDRC Program; however, the fulltime staff members who were affected have been reassigned to other positions in the agency. The Longwood School District has requested their classroom space back at the Longwood Junior High School. Therefore, the Jefferson Academic Center students and staff who had been housed at this site have been relocated to other sites.
Page 3 In December, several classes from our Bellport Academic Center (BAC) were relocated to the Southaven School in the South Country School District. Due to increased enrollment at BAC, we will continue to utilize the Southaven School through June We have been looking at available space in our component school districts as part of our longterm space planning efforts. We have been offered space at the former Armory in North Patchogue, which would meet some very specific needs that we have. We are in the process of evaluating that offer and the costs/benefits of that space. One new program that will be opening in September will be a part-time Culinary Arts Program at the Centereach Academic Center (CAC). You may recall that last year we opened a Barbering and Cosmetology Program at CAC. This Culinary Arts Program will offer the same career training, skills, and confidence needed to help students become successful. As we have done for many years, the agency will once again have a team taking part in the Walk Now for Autism Speaks walkathon at Jones Beach State Park on Sunday, October 2, If you would like to join the team, please log on to the Walk Now for Autism Speaks: Long Island website Please make sure that you join the Eastern Suffolk BOCES team (team captain is Tsila Blank). Watch for upcoming announcements about team t-shirts and other autism gear that you can purchase to support this worthy cause. Leadership Changes Since August 2015 As you know, our agency oversees several regional grant-funded networks. One of them, the Regional Special Education-Technical Assistance Support Center (RSE-TASC), provides special education assistance to school districts across Long Island. Several new administrators were hired or moved into new positions in the RSE-TASC this year: Debra DeMarchena has been appointed to the position of Administrative Coordinator, Special Education School Improvement Specialist. Doris Stanojev has been appointed to the position of Administrative Coordinator, Transition Specialist effective October 5, MariLuz Genao, Administrative Coordinator, moved from the role of Special Education School Improvement Specialist to Special Education Bilingual Specialist. Michael Mastrocinque, Administrative Coordinator, has been appointed to the position of Transition Specialist effective October 5, 2015.
Page 4 In addition to the new and reassigned administrative staff in the RSE-TASC, we have also had some administrative changes in other areas of the agency: Keith Ferry has been appointed to the position of Divisional Administrator of Curriculum, Assessment, and Data. This is the position which was vacated by the retirement of Nancy Winkler. Donna Guiffre has been appointed to the position of Divisional Administrator for Education and Information Support Services. This is the position that was vacated by Mr. Ferry. Sharon Mayrant, who comes to us from the New York City Department of Education, has been appointed to the position of Program Administrator for Student Data Services, and will fill the vacancy created by Ms. Guiffre. Theresa Westergard has been appointed to the position of Administrative Coordinator for Career, Technical, and Adult Education. This is the position which was vacated by the retirement of Vicki McGrath. Kyle Valentine has been appointed to the position of Assistant Principal at the Sayville Academic Center effective November 9, 2015, following the resignation of Danielle Turner. Loretta Corbisiero has been appointed to the position of Administrative Coordinator for Arts-in-Education. This is the position which was vacated by the retirement of Carol Brown. Carl Vitivetch has been appointed to the position of Administrative Coordinator for the School Library System. This is the position which was vacated by the retirement of Gail Barraco. Anthony Coggiano, who was previously the Assistant Principal at the Westhampton Beach Learning Center, has been appointed to the position of Principal at the Islip Academic Center. This is the position which was vacated by the retirement of Nancy Smalling. Sean Pugni will be appointed to the position of Assistant Principal at the Centereach Academic Center, pending Board approval on August 31, This is the position which was vacated due to the resignation of Gregory Gerkens. Jenny Cook, who comes to us from the South Country School District, will be appointed to the position of Assistant Principal at the Westhampton Beach Learning Center, pending Board approval on August 31, This is the position that was vacated by Mr. Coggiano.
Page 5 Tina Dillon resigned to take a position as Administrator for Pupil Personnel for the Miller Place Union Free School District. We are in the process of filling her position. We have also had several staff changes/reassignments effective July 1, They are as follows: Nancy Smalling, Principal of the Brookhaven Learning Center, retired this August after many years of service to the students in our region. Nicole Drinkwater, Principal of the Masera Learning Center, has accepted a reassignment as Principal of the Brookhaven Learning Center. Michelle Carpenter, Principal of the Sayville Academic Center, has accepted a reassignment as Principal of the Masera Learning Center. Sue Peterson, Principal of the Islip Academic Center, has accepted a reassignment as Principal of the Sayville Academic Center. As always, members of the BOCES Educators of Eastern Suffolk (BEES) should plan to attend the opening day meeting on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. (The Patchogue Theatre is located at 71 East Main Street between North Ocean Avenue and Maple Avenue. East Main Street is also known as Montauk Highway, Veterans Boulevard, and Route 27A.) Please report back to your assigned building following the meeting. All other employees should report to work as directed by their supervisors. JDL/df c: Eastern Suffolk BOCES Board
