2 SUMMARY This report summarizes the existing information describing Site specific Data as defined October 2011 by the document v8.1 ESS Target Station Design Update Project Work Package Structure WU1.3 Task The following information is provided in this report or in the listed references; 1. Characterization of release source terms during routine operation as well as due to accident scenarios for MAX-IV. 2. Characterization of soil near the installation 3. Specific data on the dispersion coefficient, the mean water velocity, Kd factors, soil density, and soil porosity 4. Characterization of sediment with respect to Kd factors for relevant elements; 5. Prevailing or critical local wind speeds and directions, atmospheric stability class precipitation, and effective heights of foreseeable atmospheric releases 6. Chemical composition of soil under ESS, and leaching of radionuclides from soil to groundwater 7. Recent update of the lay-out of the facility 8. The civil engineering information related with adjacent buildings on the site 9. Acceptance criteria for the waste storage and disposal 10. Update information related with the timeframe of the ESS project 2

4 1.1 Characterization of release source terms for MAX-IV The two reports [1 & 2] made for the synchrotron facility MAX IV describes the expected impact from radiation. Studies of the environmental impact covers - Activation (Ground Water and Air) - Skyshine - Direct exposure The amount of shielding is estimated according to ALARA. 1.2 Characterization of soil near the ESS installation Reference [3] provides information about the site s geology, groundwater conditions, surface water and storm water. Specifically, a well inventory for the vicinity is listed in chapter 5.3, describing todays use of wells (for instance household, animals, watering, etc). An estimation of the soil composition is given in reference [4]. Do note that reference [3] is not based on the current position of the facility. It differs a couple of hundreds meters. Still, the samples provide valuable general information about the site conditions. A new document with the correct position of the facility is to be delivered before the end of December A summary of the soil characterization parameters; Texture Described in reference [3], chapter 4 and in reference [5] enclosure 1.1 Organic content No considerable amount of organic material will be present in the actual soil. Parts of the descriptions in reference [3], chapter 4 is valid here. In addition to this, attachment D in reference [3] offers detailed information about the content found in the water from the wells. ph Investigated samples provides ph values from the 7 wells in the vicinity is presented as one of many parameters in attachment D reference [3]. 4
5 Cation exchange capacity 1 Not analysed, and not decided if to be performed. Based on the information about ph values, the parameter cation exchange capacity could be derived from the literature. Transfer coefficients for uptake from soil to vegetation Not investigated, and not decided if to be performed. Probably it will be sufficient enough to use data from the literature. Transfer coefficients for uptake from vegetation to animals Not investigated, and not decided if to be performed. Probably it will be sufficient enough to use data from the literature. 1.3 Specific data on the dispersion coefficient, the mean water velocity, Kd factors, soil density, and soil porosity Soil density In reference [5] chapter 3.1 the grain density is determined on 3 clay and 3 clay stone samples. There will be additional results presented in new report Compilation report on Geotechnical Conditions Soil porosity Will be presented in new report Compilation report on Geotechnical Conditions during November Mean ground water velocity Results will be presented in a new report on groundwater. Hydraulic conductivity Dispersion coefficients Preliminary in the range of m/s. In the upper part of the bedrock (Claystone) in the range of m/s. Will be presented in new report Compilation report on Geotechnical Conditions. Not decided to be specifically investigated. Will instead be referred to literature data. 1 In soil science, cation-exchange capacity (CEC) is the maximum quantity of total cations, of any class, that a soil is capable of holding, at a given ph value, for exchanging with the soil solution. CEC is used as a measure of fertility, nutrient retention capacity, and the capacity to protect groundwater from cation contamination. It is expressed as milliequivalent of hydrogen per 100 g (meq+/100g), or centi mol per kg (cmol+/kg). 5
6 Kd factors Derived coefficients for retention can be calculated based on data from literature and the new report Compilation report on Geotechnical Conditions. 1.4 Characterization of sediment with respect to Kd factors for relevant elements The types of sediment at the site is described in reference [3], chapter 4. Kd-factors: see 1.3 above. 1.5 Prevailing of critical local wind speeds and directions, atmospheric stability class, precipitation, and effective heights of foreseeable atmospheric releases The climate conditions described in reference [6], chapter 8, is considered to be a good enough base at this stage of the ESS project. It concludes the regional climate in terms of temperature, wind directions, precipitation, etc., for each month during a normal year. A definition of the stability class at the site is not found, yet. When it comes to effective heights of foreseeable atmospheric releases, the preliminary facility conditions are defined by the site layout in reference [7], saying that the maximum building height will be 111 m above the sea. On top of this there is a possibility for a stack of maximum 25 m. 1.6 Chemical composition of soil under ESS, and leaching of radionuclides from soil to groundwater The chemical composition is already mentioned in chapter 1.2, above. Data describing leaching will have to be based on information from the literature. 1.7 Recent update of the lay-out of the facility The decided layout of the facility is based on decided coordinates given in reference [8]. In order to receive an idea of how the final facility could look like, there are conceptual layouts in in reference [9]. 6
7 1.8 The civil engineering information related with adjacent buildings on the site This area is managed by Kent Hedin, Head of Conventional Facilities, ESS, and summarized with the following; Autumn's work consists of two parts. First, design of a building program for the plant and secondly an effort to study how to cost-effectively establish a structural design for the accelerator and target foundations. These studies will serve as input for the conceptual design of the facilities, which will start when the conceptual design report (CDR) for the machine is ready. Questions about the facilities is, for the time being, best answered with the baseline described in the ESS report 2003 as a general background until the new conceptual design has evolved. Job is ongoing. If needed, Kent Hedin is of course available via ESS. 1.9 Acceptance criteria for the waste storage and disposal Defined by Compilation of the Swedish Radiation Legislation, reference [10] Update information This report will be updated when new and/or additional information is provided. Specifically, the time schedule for the decommissioning phase will be added. 7
