4 Scope The thirteenth edition of Italian-Hungarian Symposium on Spectrochemistry will be held in Bologna (Italy), April 20 th 24 th, 2008 under the auspices of the University Alma Mater Studiorum, of the Italian National Council of Research and of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a part of the bilateral governmental programme for scientific and technical co-operation between Italy and Hungary, this series of biennial events are a well established tradition which provides scientists from both countries with a permanent forum to discuss the outcome of their studies, primarily in the field of human health and environmental protection. The XIII Italian-Hungarian Symposium on Spectrochemistry will deal with one of the most serious threat to human health, i.e., the consequences of environmental pollution on food safety. In this regard, the major challenges posed by anthropic activities to food integrity will be taken into account, e.g., the presence in the environment of potentially toxic elements released by motor vehicles, the emission to the atmosphere of persistent organic pollutants from industrial plants and the contamination of water bodies with metabolites of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. In this context, the availability of fit-for-purpose, innovative and sophisticated analytical (mostly Spectrochemical) techniques is of paramount importance and will thus permeate every aspect of the conference. The backbone of the Symposium will consist of approximately thirty oral presentations. Poster presentations, in turn, will be displayed for the entire duration of the event. Last, but not least, a number of oral presentations will be given by prominent scientists from countries other than Italy or Hungary so as to further stimulate the mutual exchange of views and gain information on other possible approaches adopted to assess and preserve the integrity of food. Venue The XIII Italian-Hungarian Symposium on Spectrochemistry will be held at the University Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna. The University of Bologna is one of the oldest continually operating degree-granting universities in the world and the second largest university in Italy. It was the first university founded in the western world (AD 1088) when masters of grammar, rhetoric and logic began to devote themselves to law, inspiring themselves of the Byzantine Justinian Code. Since 2000, its motto has been Alma mater studiorum (Latin for "fostering mother of studies"). The university of Bologna received a charter from Frederick I Barbarossa in 1158, but in the 19th century a committee of historians led by Giosuè Carducci traced the birth of the University back to 1088, making it arguably the longest-lived occidental university. The University of Bologna is historically notable for its teaching of canon and civil law. The University of Bologna is a pivotal point of reference in the panorama of European culture. It counts about 100,000 students in its 23 faculties. It has branch centers in Reggio nell'emilia, Imola, Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini and a branch center abroad in Buenos Aires.

5 Language English is preferred. However, if desired, contributions can be presented in German or French. No simultaneous translation service will be available. Registration The registration fee of the Symposium is 350 for regular attendees and 150 for PhD students. The registration fee entitles participants to attend the scientific sessions and the social programs (get-together party, excursion, Conference dinner) and to receive one copy of the Proceedings containing all contributions presented at the Symposium.
