2 Comments of Fincentrum s analytical department on the results in the various categories of Fincentrum Bank of the Year 2012 MAIN CATEGORIES Bank of the Year 2012 The winner of the 2012 edition is Komerční banka, again very closely followed by Česká spořitelna, with ČSOB coming third, but lagging far behind again. The expert jury has thus taken into account the opinion of most of the population, who are highly conservative and trust traditional big banks despite their higher fees compared with their keen competitors. With the exception of 2008, Česká spořitelna and Komerční banka traditionally alternate in the first two places, with ČSOB suffering from the relative weakness of its Belgian owner and the expert jury s long-lasting hesitation because of the non-transparent takeover of IPB. We can also see several attractive innovations in the margins of Komerční banka s victory this year: for example, it was the first on the market to launch mobile contactless payments. KB, at last, and with certain technical problems, also launched a new generation of its internet banking, which has caught up with the 21st century standards. KB has also benefited from the successful concept of its fee policy, under which it returns a part of the collected fees to clients in the form of rewards. The Most Trustworthy Bank of the Year 2012 Česká spořitelna has retained its title from last year. This is indicated by the extensive public opinion poll conducted by STEM/MARK in October From the perspective of overall trustworthiness, Komerční banka came second and ČSOB third. Česká spořitelna is regarded as trustworthy mainly in terms of financial stability, communication with clients, security of deposited money, and philanthropic activities. While Komerční banka and ČSOB are equally trustworthy for all groups of the population, Česká spořitelna is regarded as trustworthy mainly by the older generation and people with a lower level of education. The Most Dynamic Bank of the Year 2012 Coming ahead of Unicredit Bank, Fio banka has retained first place; thanks to its intensive promotional campaign it has welcomed its 200,000th customer this year. It has mainly pleased its clients by launching its own payment card associated with an account that features the most advantageous payment services, and it has also further developed its mortgage loans; in this respect, it is one of the two banks on the market that provide offset mortgage loans to their clients. Compared with last year, third position has changed, with Equa bank dislodging Raiffeisenbank thanks to its advantageous deposit products and innovations in mortgages. Bank without Barriers 2012 This year, Konto BARIÉRY, which sponsors this category, has also invited people with impaired hearing to accompany adjudicators from the ranks of the disabled. It has turned out that banks are really improving their services for the disabled. However, the pair of past winners, ČSOB and Česká spořitelna, continue to be far ahead of the other rated banks. ČSOB ERA poštovní spořitelna has retained its title from last year by a very close margin. It mainly scored with its escribe service, i.e. simultaneous transcription of spoken word. Certain shortcomings still persist, but the effort to tear down the barriers cannot be overlooked.

3 Private Bank of the Year 2012 This category, sponsored by Motejlek.com, looked at the popularity of private banks amongst the most affluent Czechs and Slovaks, of whom several dozen voted in the poll. J&T Banka retained its title from last year closely followed by ČSOB. However, compared with last year the head start of these two banks has been significantly reduced. Česká spořitelna has performed much better; it was placed third with its Erste Premier product. J&T Banka s dominant position is mainly attributable to the ultra-rich Prague clients, who appreciate its concierge services. Insurance Company of the Year 2012 The country s three largest insurance companies took the first three places; thus, this year, the expert jury mainly appreciated the comprehensive nature of the services offered by the insurance companies. This year s winner is Česká pojišťovna, which began last year, following years of agony, to significantly innovate its product offering; this has been reflected in a greater variability of its life policies and also in non-life product innovations. Thanks to this, and also thanks to the brand s traditional trustworthiness amongst clients, it was able to retain its title from last year. Second place was taken by Allianz, which in this year s communication campaign cleverly used its benefits in policies for women in relation to the ban on gender discrimination, thereby swapping its position last year with Kooperativa. PERSONAL CATEGORIES Banker of the Year 2012 Retaining last year s vote of Czech bankers, Pavel Kysilka has won the Banker of the Year category this year again. This repeated victory is no surprise as he is a banker with deep knowledge of the Czech and European environment, is a Czech, and an interesting personality. Insurer of the Year 2012 For this year, Martin Žáček of UNIQA pojišťovna has become the best Insurer of the Year. Martin Žáček is a prototype of an inconspicuous official in the best sense of the word, who through his conservative and consistent work has helped to move Uniqa pojišťovna from the edge of the market into the centre. PRODUCT CATEGORIES Mortgage of the Year 2012 This year was very exciting as regards mortgages. While in the past it was the smaller banks that stirred up the competitive environment, this year it has been the largest banks that have kept trumping each other by bargain rates. This is also why the largest mortgage banks, which between them hold about three quarters of the mortgage market, lined up on the winner s podium. Česká spořitelna has merited its first place mainly by its great activity at the beginning of this year, whereby it set the mortgage market in motion. By lowering its interest rates, it made its competitors follow suit and directed rates towards new historical lows.

4 Pension Fund of the Year 2012 Allianz penzijní fond has won this year again. The reason is more than evident. In the past few years, Allianz has been steadily crediting its clients accounts with the highest growth, which it achieves thanks to its lowest costs on the market. Second place has been taken by ING penzijní fond, which has attracted attention this year mainly by its promotional campaign. Third place was taken by Penzijní fond Komerční banky, a long-standing representative on the winner s podium, a stable pension fund with a good reputation amongst both retail and corporate clients. Account of the Year 2012 As last year, all medal positions have been taken by low-cost products. Fio Personal Account has won. The expert jury mainly appreciated the fact that in its account, Fio banka combines the low-cost feature typical of internet banks with personal contact at bricks-and-mortar branches that are accessible in most districts in the country. Second place was taken by Raiffeisenbank s ekonto, which constitutes an advantageous account for more affluent clients amongst the conventional banks, and the bronze has been awarded to Poland-based mbank with its mkonto. Building Society of the Year 2012 It is as if time has stopped on the building society market. The whole industry is in torpor because of the changes in government support and the low rates of interest on mortgage loans, with which building societies cannot compete. A situation has emerged where the largest building societies would rather invest in the ways and means of keeping clients on their expensive loans, despite their earlier promises of possible refinancing, instead of inventing innovations. It is no wonder then that the results are the same as last year. Wüstenrot, which has designed its product, despite low costs, as the market s most advantageous for savings, has therefore justifiably retained first place. Life Policy of the Year 2012 The top position has been retained by ING s SMART life policy, which has, thanks to a prominent marketing campaign, left its mark in people s memories as a modern product that will flexibly adjust as much as possible to any situation in life. In addition, this year has also seen some major innovations (including an extension of the cover for serious illnesses, and a bonus system), which has helped to preserve the positive view of the product. Česká pojišťovna came second with its Healthy Life 2012 concept geared towards prevention of insured events, and the third place has been taken by Allianz with is special FORwomen supplementary insurance policy reflecting the last opportunity for women to take out an advantageous insurance policy this year; these insurance policies will become more expensive for them because of the ban on gender discrimination.
