STUDY IN amsterdam!!! 30 EC Credit Value February 23th June 19th 2015 Undergraduate Education Minor (Ba) Diversity and Critical Citizenship
Education Minor: Diversity and Critical Citizenship Participants For Diversity and Critical Citizenship we are accepting both Dutch and international students from Primary School Education, Pedagogy or related bachelor programs. The program will be in English, therefore students are expected to master English on a level that enables them to participate in all study activities (preferably B2 or higher). A high level of autonomy in learning skills is expected from participants of the program: meetings with a teacher educator will be scheduled twice a week, and during the rest of the week participants will collaborate on all kinds of activities autonomously. Aims and Goals During the program, students will focus on different areas related to the subjects of Education, Diversity and Critical Citizenship. Encouraging children in (primary) school to take responsibility for the way they speak and/or act and to be in dialogue about it, can be regarded as the main goal of the program. Therefore, students will participate in activities aiming at the development of critical citizenship in a culturally diverse society through education: for instance philosophy with children, cosmopolitan awareness, cultivating powers of imagination through the arts, becoming more critical of social injustices within school systems (including the canon).
Education Minor: Diversity and Critical Citizenship For students who dare to think differently; Who are curious for new perspectives on education; Who want to study in the very divers city of amsterdam!!
content Module elements A. Understanding Diversity (and Amsterdam) 3 EC B. Critical Citizenship & Social Justice 5 EC C. Philosophy with Children 6 EC D. Cosmopolitanism 6 EC E. Narrative Imagination 6 EC F. Internship 4 EC A. Understanding Diversity (and Amsterdam) The course will start with an introduction on diversity and a first acquaintance with Amsterdam as a culturally diverse city. We ll read literature on diversity; reflect on our own concepts of diversity; and visit the city! During the 30 EC course, students will collaborate on activities focused on all of these elements. Students are free to give emphasis on elements of their choice.
content B. Critical Citizenship & Social Justice Being guided by critical thinkers, the relationship between education and Social Justice will be thought through. How can we become more aware of power relations within the classroom, within the school, but also within the curriculum? CRITICAL CITIZENSHIP MARTHA NUSSBAUM (1997, 2010) CONSIDERS SOCRATIC THINKING, COSMOPOLITANISM AND NARRATIVE IMAGINATION IMPORTANT ABILITIES OF A CRITICAL CITIZEN WITHIN A DIVERSE, DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY. THESE ABILITIES CONSTITUTE OUR PROGRAM ON DIVERSITY & CRITICAL CITIZENSHIP C. Philosophy with Children Critical citizens can be characterised as people who can think for themselves and who are able to reason together about their choices, beliefs and habits. Therefore, attention will be given to philosophy and philosophy with children.
content D. Cosmopolitanism Without giving up loyalty to their own family, critical citizens consider themselves citizens of the world, (mutually) depending on people they ve never met. During the course, we ll develop educational activities stimulating children s cosmopolitan awareness. E. Narrative Imagination When it comes to the ability to think what it might be like to be in someone else s shoes, the arts come into play. We ll figure out ways in which novels (including children s books), poetry, photography, films, music etc. can develop children s narrative imagination. F. Internship Students will be connected to Dutch schools for primary education to do some research, to discuss possibilities of critical citizenship education with teachers, etc.
Assessment, grants and accommodation Assessment During the program, students collect their work in a portfolio: a record of activities, ideas, thoughts, notes, drafts, revisions, reflective memos etc. At the end of the course, students will select and submit pieces of work from this broad portfolio. This selection will be their presentation- or assessment portfolio, which will be assessed by teachers of our Academy. The result of the assessment is either pass or fail. An Exchange Agreement will qualify you for grants and allow you to engage in student exchange without a tuition fee. Ask your international coordinator if our institutions have an Exchange Agreement. If not, contact us to make one. Accommodation If you need help finding accommodation, please contact us. Grants University of Applied Sciences ipabo, Academy for Teacher Education has Bilateral ERASMUS+ Exchange Agreements with various European university colleges and other educational institutions.
