2 I PURPOSE OF NYIT INTERNATIONAL RECRUITMENT GUIDE 1

3 Purpose of NYIT International Recruitment Guide I The NYIT International Recruitment Guide has been created to assist you in your efforts to work with the NYIT International Admissions Office for the recruitment of qualified and talented international prospective students. During your travels, you may meet with a number of administrators, foreign educational agents, parents, and students who will express an interest in NYIT. This guide will provide you with the tools, answers, and appropriate contact information needed to facilitate the international admissions process. The guide includes our admission requirements for the English Language Institute, undergraduate freshmen, transfer, and graduate applicants. It also provides information on the steps students need to take and the documents they must submit to NYIT to receive their SEVIS I-20 form to apply for their F-1 visas at the US Embassies in their home countries. Thank you for working with our office in recruiting exceptional students from overseas and ensuring that the New York Institute of Technology is recognized as a global institution. 2

5 Undergraduate Admission Requirements II English Language Institute: Students applying to study in our English Language Institute must submit at least their high school transcripts and proof of high school completion. Should the students know ahead of time that after completing the English Language Program, they wish to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree, than they should also submit the required documents discussed in the manual to meet the admission requirements for these programs. Students applying for the ELI program do not need to provide a TOEFL exam or proof of English proficiency since the purpose of study is English. They do however need to provide the appropriate sponsorship documents required to receive the SEVIS I- 20 form used to apply for the F-1 student Visa. Students, who arrive at NYIT to study directly into the ELI program, must complete at least 1 semester of the ELI program before they can apply for another program of study. 6 Incoming Freshmen: Students applying from overseas must submit many of the same academic documents as US domestic students; however, they are required to submit additional documentation to meet admission criteria. Below are the requirements for incoming freshmen seeking admission to NYIT. 1. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) International students are required to submit proof of English proficiency. Many countries have different tests available to students to use as proof of English proficiency but most US colleges and Universities require the TOEFL examination. At NYIT, we accept the TOEFL exam and the IELTS exam. The required results from the TOEFL written based exam are in the range of 500 to 550. The required results from the TOEFL computer based exam are in the range of 173 to 213. The required results from the TOEFL internet based exam are in the range of 61 to 79. And finally the required results of the IELTS exam are 5.0 to 6.0. Please be aware that the TOEFL or IELTS exam cannot be waived under any circumstances unless the student is applying from a country where English is the language of the country. We have provided a list of these countries: The United Kingdom Ireland Nigeria Ghana Jamaica Trinidad Canada (not including Quebec) Students that score below a 500 on the TOEFL written exam, below a 173 on the TOEFL computer exam, below a 61 on the TOEFL internet exam, or below a 5.0 on the IELTS are not eligible for admission to an academic program of study. We do not offer conditional admission to students that fall below the required scores. However, the 5

7 student can retake the exam and resubmit new scores or ask to be processed to the NYIT English Language Institute. If a student decides to attend the NYIT ELI program, the student will take the placement exam upon arrival to NYIT and will be placed in the appropriate level of English language courses. Depending on the student s placement, it can take a minimum of one full semester up to a year and a half to successfully complete the English Language program. Upon successful completion of the program, the Office of Admissions will once again review the student s application to a program of study. Academic Transcripts/ High School Transcripts Students must submit their official secondary education transcripts and proof of high school completion. They must be accompanied by certified English translations. Students will also be required to submit any high school exams taken along with the transcripts. These exams include the Standard 10 and 12 exam results for students from India, the IGCSE results for British based schools, CXC examinations from the Caribbean, West African Exam results from West Africa, and so on. 3. SAT Examinations (Scholastic Aptitude Test) Many high schools overseas have their own set of examination boards. These will be required along with the transcripts as listed above. Therefore, SAT examinations are not required for admission to NYIT; however, are required if a student wishes to be considered for an academic scholarship. There is no separate application that needs to 6

8 be submitted in order to consider a student for an academic scholarship, but SATs must be submitted. The Admission s Committee will determine if students are eligible for scholarships by utilizing an index calculator and calculating the student s high school transcript overall grade point average with the combined SAT score. In addition, admission to particular programs of study requires an SAT, such as Architecture, Engineering, and Medicine. Without the SAT, the student may be placed into the department but in an undecided program of study. For more information on SAT overseas examination centers, please visit 4. A Personal Statement/ Essay Students are required to send in an essay/ personal statement. Guidelines for the essay are provided on the application itself. The essay should be about 350 words, about 1 page long, and should be about the student s career goals, and why they want to come to NYIT. 5. Letters of Recommendation We require two letters of recommendation for all undergraduate students. We encourage students to request the letters from high school teachers or counselors. 6. International Documents We have provided a list of documents required in order to obtain a SEVIS I-20 form, which is used by admitted students to apply for the F-1 student visa at the US Embassy in their home country. 7

9 A. Notarized Affidavit of Support Form: This form is available online at (refer to the insert in the back of the guide.) This is a form the students need to have completed by his/her US sponsor(s). A sponsor is a person who commits in writing to financially support the student during his/her studies in the US for a minimum of a full year. The sponsor(s) must complete and sign the NYIT form, and have his/her bank complete the bottom section of the form to show that the sponsor(s) does have the required funding in their bank account in the form of a savings, checking, or money market account. The sponsorship cannot be in the form of stocks, property, or retirement accounts. If our form is not completed by the sponsor(s), then we also accept a typed and signed letter from the sponsor(s), but the letter must be notarized by a notary public, lawyer, or embassy official. If the student submits this type of letter, then we also require a separate bank statement. Sponsorship document fees are subject to change yearly as school fees change. SEVIS I-20s are issued three to four months before the start of the semester. For more information on applying for the F-1 visa at a US Embassy, please visit B. The Bank Statement: This is an official letter on official bank stationary from the sponsor(s) s bank indicating there is sufficient funds in the account(s) to sponsor the student during his/her study in the US. 7. Passport A copy of the student s passport is needed when the office of admissions issues a SEVIS I-20 form directly to the home country. The name of the student must appear on the SEVIS I-20 form exactly as it appears on the passport. 8

10 Transfer: An undergraduate transfer student must submit several of the same academic international sponsorship documents as incoming freshmen with a few additions. The transfer students must also submit the following: 1. TOEFL As proof of English proficiency, a student must score a 173 to 213 or higher for the TOEFL computer based exam, a 500 to 550 or higher on the TOEFL written based exam, a 61 to 79 on the TOEFL internet based exam, or a 5.0 to 6.0 on the IELTS. 2. College or University Transcripts Official transcripts from overseas also with certified translations to English are required. Copies of the transcript are acceptable for an initial review, however, official transcripts must be sent directly from the schools. 3. Transfer Credit Evaluation A transfer credit evaluation is required by the office of admissions from an approved foreign credential evaluation agency such as World Education Service (WES), or Globe Language Services. The evaluation reports provide us with information on the accreditation of the foreign institution and the US equivalency of grades and grade point averages. Our evaluations office cannot determine the number of credits an international student will be granted from NYIT without a course by course evaluation by one of these agencies. An admission decision can be made without the report, but transfer credit and/or an academic scholarship cannot be awarded without until the report has been received. 9

The applications to the evaluation agency are sent directly by the student and not through NYIT. 4. Syllabi/ Course Description Students are also encouraged to submit copies of the course syllabi of the courses they wish to receive credit at NYIT. This is not a requirement but is strongly recommended incase our evaluations team needs to have a description of the course to best match it up to a current NYIT course in a particular area of study. 5. 12 Conditional Admission to a degree program can be offered only if the student submitted a TOEFL between 61 to 78 or IELTS 5.0 or 5.5. If the TOEFL or IELTS scores are less than 61IBT or 5.0 IELTS, the student cannot be admitted to an academic program. 11

13 III GRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 12

14 Graduate Admission Requirements III The Office of Graduate Admissions processes and reviews the international graduate applications and academic documents for many of the graduate programs, however, some of the departments do make the admission decisions for specific programs. All applications and supporting documents must be sent directly to the office of admissions. The requirements for international graduate applicants are: 1. TOEFL The minimum score requirements are the same as Undergraduate students. With eth exception of the MBA program that does not allow conditional admission. For the MBA program, the minimum TOEFL must be 79 IBT or 6.0 IELTS 2. College or University Transcripts Copies of the transcripts are acceptable for an initial review; however, official transcripts must be sent directly from the schools. Please note that some countries offer three year programs that may not be equivalent to a completed US bachelor s degree; however, the Office of Graduate Admissions may review the transcript and determine that the applicant is eligible for conditional acceptance to a Graduate Bridge Program. An NYIT Graduate Bridge Program is a graduate degree seeking program that also requires the student to complete approximately 30 credits of prerequisite NYIT course work before the student can be fully admitted into the specific program of study. 13

15 3. Proof of Student Diploma A photocopy of the diploma, a final transcript, or a license from the foreign college or university is all acceptable. 4. GRE Examination (Graduate Record Examination) The GRE is required for some of the graduate programs and in some cases depending on the student s overall university grade point average. The minimum GRE score required is dependent on the student s major, overall Undergraduate GPA, and the department regulations. 5. GMAT Examination (Graduate Management Admission Test) The GMAT is required for MBA applicants. The minimum GMAT score required is dependent on the student s overall Undergraduate GPA. The minimum score required will be determined by the MBA department. 6. Notarized Affidavit of Support Form and Bank Statement These documents are required in order to receive the SEVIS I-20 for the application for the F-1 visa. Please refer to the sponsorship requirements for undergraduate applicants on page 8, as it is the same for graduate. (There is a difference in the required yearly sponsorship amount which is subject to change as tuition fees increase.) 7. Essay and Recommendation Letters An essay and letters of recommendation are required by some of the graduate departments for specific programs of study. Please refer to the contact information on page 17 to find out what is required by each department. 14
