3 I Patented Sept. 7, 1937 UNITED STATES SCREW DRIVER PATENT OFFICE Stojan Naumovich, New York, N. Y. Application July 24, 1936, Serial No. 92,279 5 Claims. This invention relates to new and useful im provements in a combined scraper and screw driver for painters. The invention has for an object the construc 5 tion of an article as mentioned which is charac terized by a?at metallic handle portion adapted to continue into a scraper blade, and a screw driver pivotally mounted on the rear end of said handle portion and adapted to assume a closed position against one side portion of said handle. Still further the invention contemplates the provision of a means for limiting pivoting of the screw driver to an extended operative position Another one of the objects is to provide an arrangement whereby neither paint, putty, nor dirt may interfere with the complete opening of 45 the screw driver. 1 Still further the invention proposes the provi sion of handle body elements associated with the flat metallic handle for giving the handle a bet ter shape for gripping.. Another one of the objects is the provision of a means for holding the screw driver in its closed position, releasably, by moving one of the said handle body elements. For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref erence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the append ed claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. In the accompanying drawings forming a ma terial part of this disclosure: Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a combined scraper and screw driver for painters construct ed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the flat metallic handle and scraper with the screw driver por tion and the body elements removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the screw driver per se. Fig. ll is an elevational view looking in the di rection of the line 1l ll of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. l. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side view of the top portion of Fig. 1 looking from the left side. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of a flat metallic handle for a combined scraper and screw driver constructed according to a modi? cation of the invention.. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the screw driver element per se for the device shown in Fig. 8. (Cl ) Fig. 10 is a fragmentary elevational View part ly shown in section of a combined scraper and screw driver constructed according to a modi? cation of the invention. Fig. 11 is a sectional view taken on the line ll-h of Fig. 10. Fig. 12 is a fragmentary perspective view of the?at metallic handle portion of a combined scraper and screw driver embodying another modi?cation. 1 Fig. 13 is one of the brackets shown in Fig. 12. Fig. 14 is a perspective view of the screw driver element per se. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1-7 inclusive the combined scraper and screw driver for painters comprises a?at metallic handle portion Ill continuing into a scraper blade ll. At the junction between the handle por tion and the scraper blade on both sides of the handle portion there are shoulders l2 and it. From one of these shoulders, namely, the shoul der l3, a ba? le strip portion Ill extends upwards and terminates at the top in a curved portion 15 concentric with an opening it. A handle body element ll is secured upon one side of the flat metallic handle portion if), the side having a shoulder 12. Another handle body element It is secured to the other side of the flat handle portion II] to one side of the baffle ele ment portion [4. Rivets l9 engage through the element ll, through openings 20 in the handle portion IE1, and through the handle body ele ment l8 for holding these parts together as a unit. A screw driver'blade 2! has a disc shaped base portion 22 formed with an opening 23. A rivet 24 engages through the opening 21 and the open ing it for pivotally supporting the screw driver element. This screw driver element may be ex tended to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 7 in which position the screw driver may be used. It should be noted that the circular portion 95 of the baf?e strip M terminates in a point l5 which prevents, paint, putty and other foreign sub stances from collecting at this point and pre venting the screw driver blade from opening completely. In Figs. 8 and 9 a modi?ed form of the in vention has been disclosed in which the com bined scraper and screw driver for painters 50 comprises a?at metallic handle portion 26 ter minating in shoulder portions 21 and continu ing into a scraper blade 28. The handle por tion 26 is formed with a disc shaped projection ' 29 from one edge. A screw driver blade 30 is
4 shown in Fig. 9, and is formed with a fork shaped base end 3 the?ngers of which are adapted to straddle the projection 29. A pintle rivet 32 is used for pivotally mounting the screw driver blade 38 on the handle. The dot and dash lines 38 in Fig. 8 indicate the folded position of the screw driver blade. It may be extended by piv oting it around to substantially 180. The han dle portion 26 is shown formed with openings 33 for rivets for attaching handle body elements (not shown on the drawings) but similar to the handle body elements previously described on the sides of the handle portion 26. In Figs. 10 and 11 another modi?ed form of the invention has been disclosed. In this form there is a flat metallic handle portion 26 which terminates at the bottom in shoulder portions 21 continuing into a blade 28. At the top portion at one side there is a projection 29 from the handle portion 26. A screw driver element 30' is asso ciated with the handle portion and is pivotally mounted thereon by a rivet 32. Thus far the construction is identical to that shown in Figs. 8 and 9. Other details may be obtained from the prior disclosure. - There is now a departure from the previous form in the provision of handle body elements 36?xedly attached by rivets 37 to the sides of the handle portion 26 only at the top areas. At the bottom areas there are additional handle body elements 36', but these are movably mounted. They are held in movable positions by rivets 38 which engage through slots 39 in the handle ele ments. It is these slots 39 that permit the han dle elements to be moved. An expansion spring is located within a recess 1H in each of the handle elements 36' and acts between the han dle elements and one of the rivets for normally urging the handle elements 36 into raised po sition. These handle elements are provided with hook portions 42 at one of their sides engaging keeper recesses 43 in the screw driver blade 30 for locking the screw driver blade in the closed position. Before the screw driver blade may be opened it is necessary that the handle elements 36 be man ually moved down a short distance and the hooks 42 will disengage from the keeper recesses 43. The screw driver blade may be pivoted to the open position. In Figs inclusive another modi?cation of the invention has been disclosed in which there is a?at metallic handle portion 45 terminating at the bottom in shoulders 46 and continuing into a blade 4'5. At the top there are brackets 48 riveted to the sides of the handle portion. Between these brackets the base end portion 49 a screw driver blade 139 may engage. Openings 58 and 58 in the brackets and in the base portion 49' are adapted to receive a pintle rivet for pivot ally supporting the screw driver. Handle body elements 52 are secured by rivets 53 to the sides of the handle portion Q5. While I have illustrated and described the pre ferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the pre cise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modi?cations com ing within the scope of the invention as de?ned in the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is: 1.
