3 1. General Characteristics of the District Tarn Taran is one of the border districts which lies in the North West frontier of Punjab and is bounded by district Amritsar in the north east, district Kapurthala in the east and district Ferozepur in the south. It comprises of 3 tehsils, and 8 comm unity development blocks, 4 asse mbly constituencies and one Lok Sabha consti tuency. The District has about 240 km international boundary with Pakistan. It is bounded by river Beas in the south eastern side. Tarn Taran is one of t he most historical town with hi story spanning over 400 years. It is an important religious town due to its connectivity with the fifth Sikh Guru Arjun Dev Ji, who founded t he town. Tarn Taran is the administrative headquarter of Tarn Ta ran District created in 2006 out of Amritsar District. Harike Wetland, also known as "Hari-ke-Pattan", with the Harike Lake in the deeper part of it, is the la rgest wetland in Asia falls in the Tarn Taran district of the Punjab. The wetland and the lake were formed by constructing the head works across the Sutlej river, in The headwork s is locat ed downstream of the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej rivers 1.1 Location & Geographical Area The Tarn Taran District falls in the Jullundur Division of the Punjab. In shape, it is a trapeziu m, with its base resting on the River Beas. Its western side adjoins Pakistan. The nor th-eastern side is bounded by the Kapurthala District, and towards it south-east across the Ri ver Beas lie the Ferozepur districts. The district is di vided into three tehsils, Seven Sub tehsil s and eight Blocks. All important places in the district are connected by road. The total area of the district is hectares 1.2 Topography of Tarntarn Taran district lies between North and East longitudes. The area is occupied by alluvial plains. And covers an area of Hectares. 1.3 Availability of Minerals The district is poor as regards m ineral wealth. A fe w minor minerals are, however, found.the whole of the Ta rntarn District is com posed of the recent deposits known collectively as the Indo-Gangetic alluvium, which consists of the alluvial sand, clay and loam. Apart from the clay used for brick-making, the concretionary fo rm of calcium carbonate, known as kankar, is found in beds generally at a sl ight depth below the surface at the 2
4 upper margin of the impermeable subsoil, from where it is excavated to form material for road-making Kankar It is massive, hard and compact nodular calcareous material light grey to dark grey. Sand, silt and clay are found associated with kankar. In general, its thickness varies from a few centim eters to that of a meter. It occurs mostly in the form of isolated beds and pockets. It can be used for white washing and road metal ling. Some brick earth and foundry sands are reported from the district Groundwater The entire area in t he district is underlain by quaternary alluvium comprising fine to c oarse sand, silt an d clay, with intercal ations of pebbles and kankar. Bore holes drilled down to a de pth of about 100 m etres have encountered per cent of sa nd. Groundwater occurs both under confined and unconfined conditions. The depth of reach wat er in the area ranges from about 1 to 20 metres below the land surfaces. The water-table is generally deep towards the high banks of the Beas and the Sutlej. However, in the vicinity of the canal-irrigated area and also in the floodplains of the Beas and the Satluj, the water-table is very shallow. In m any parts of the canal-irrigated areas, waterlogged condi tions prevail. Land salinization is also observed in areas affected w ith water logging. The groundwater available in the greater part of the dist rict is generally fresh but hard, except in the southern part of the district where it is of inferior quality, being saline to bitter.the groundwater in general is suitable for irrigati on and domestic purposes. 1.4 Forest An area of 5,000 hectare is covere d under reserved, protected, private and unclassified forests. The main species of plants in district Tarntarn are Eucalyptus, Shisham, Kikar and Popular etc. 1.5 Administrative set up For administrative purpose, District Tarntarn is divided into three Tehsils, seven Sub-Tehsils, Eight Blocks, four Assembly Constituencies & One Lok Sabha constituency. 3
