Using Data to Improve MCAS Scores McCloskey Middle School Presentation by Kara Ekstrom The goal is to turn data into information, and information into insight. Carly Fiorina, Former CEO of HP

2013 MCAS Analysis Questions to ask when analyzing our data: How well did our students do overall? Where do we see the most growth? How did each subgroup score? Who are the students that need immediate intervention? How many students were a few points away from scoring in a higher category? Who are they? Within each grade: How did the students score within each domain? For each standard? Within each domain, where can we see areas of strength? Weakness? What are the specific questions that our students struggled with? When and how did we teach the areas of strength? Weakness? Which of these domains are recently added/moved due to the CCSS?

Narrowing the Focus If you do not know how to ask the right question, you discover nothing. W. Edward Deming McCloskey Essential Questions: What worked last year? Which domains need more attention? Within each domain which standards? Who needs immediate intervention? How can we best help them?

Where do we start? An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied. Arnold Glasow, American Businessman McCloskey Objectives: During the school year, the Math Specialist will: Provide supports that foster a data driven culture at McCloskey Identify students in need of immediate intervention based on multiple data points. Provide support to identified students in small groups or individually as often as possible/needed. Monitor student progress and repeat cycle. Assist with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

STAR Enterprise assessment What is it? STAR assessment adjusts to each student s responses, pinpointing student achievement levels quickly and efficiently Student results are then compared to their student-response database. With millions of tests taken each year all over the country, Renaissance Learning has the largest student-response database anywhere. Using these data, STAR psychometricians develop accurate predictive statistics, alignments to state and Common Core standards, measure student growth, and learning progressions for detailed instructional planning guidance.

STAR Enterprise assessment How is it being used at McCloskey? September 2013 STAR School wide screening to determine a baseline and identify students in need of intervention. Identified domains of weaknesses and strengths to guide instruction for all students grades 6-8. November 2013 Screening for students that were receiving interventions to monitor progress. Adjust practice to results to focus on areas of immediate attention

STAR Enterprise assessment How is it being used at McCloskey? December 2013 Administered school wide. Identified students no longer in need of intervention and those new to needing intervention Compares our student results to those of children nationwide Identifies specific CCSS Standards students are above/below nationwide average Report these finding to teachers collaboratively create units, lessons, mini-lessons and other creative ways to fill in any gaps

STAR Enterprise assessment How is it being used at McCloskey? February 2014 Administered school wide to 6 th and 7 th graders Identified students no longer in need of intervention and those new to needing intervention Compares our student results to those of children nationwide Identifies specific CCSS Standards students are above/below nationwide average Report these finding to teachers collaboratively create units, lessons, mini-lessons and other creative ways to fill in any gaps

STAR Enterprise assessment Grade 6 Case Study STAR Enterprise compares student results to the MA frameworks and predicts how students will score on the Spring 2014 MCAS Grade 6 Spring 2013 MCAS December Star February Star Advanced Proficient NI Warning

STAR Enterprise assessment Monitoring Improvements on CCSS

Identifying Standards in need of more/less attention

Using the Data to Drive Instruction When you know better you do better. Maya Angelou What are we doing successfully in the areas with great success? Why are some areas not where we would like them to be? Compare this data with classroom/student observations, and other formative assessments. Adjust instruction and focus through co-teaching, scaffolding lessons, creating materials and methods of representing materials. Create differentiated avenues for student success. Provide additional small group pull outs and support for kids needing minor interventions or enrichments when not working with identified RtI students.

RtI Data Points - Who needs help? Anything that is measured and watched improves. Bob Parsons Fall 2013 MCAS STAR December 2013 February 2014 STAR, Teacher Recommendations STAR Domain Scores, Observations Trimester 1 Grades Grades, Teacher Recommendations, Unit Assessments

Where are we now? Universal Screening with Multiple Data Points Adjust practice according to data analysis Using Data to Improve MCAS Scores Identify Needs within school to improve student achievement Evaluate effectiveness and Monitor Progress Work with students, teachers and families to improve student achievement
