2 April 18, 2014 RETROFIT WATER FILL STATIONS OVERVIEW Over the past year, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has been installing many retrofit water bottle fill stations across campus. Using plastic water bottles increases the chances of people improperly disposing of them, which in turn will create trash on our beautiful planet. The students will benefit from buying reusable water bottles because they will not have to keep purchasing plastic water bottles every couple of weeks. Installing more water fill stations across campus will increase the accessibility students and faculty has to obtain clean water on a daily basis. The three previous statements illustrate why UIC needs to invest money from the Green Fee money to replace the existing water fountains with retrofitted water fill stations at UIC. DISPOSING OF WASTES PROPERLY Primarily, by using reusable water bottles, there will be less pollution and trash on the ground and in the landfills. Trash on the ground or in landfills will not decompose for thousands of years, so all of this trash will pile up if people do not clean it up. All of this garbage will pollute our Earth and eventually make it inhospitable for future generations. For instance, UIC has both garbage and recycle bins. However, students do not always correctly place their trash in the respective bins. This is a problem because people are not effectively using the bins to recycle what should be recycled. When these plastic water bottles are not recycled, then companies cannot reuse them to resell later. Thus, we will be paying more money to produce more plastic for the bottles instead of reusing them

3 When these plastic water bottles are not recycled, then companies cannot reuse them to resell later. Thus, we will be paying more money to produce more plastic for the bottles instead of reusing them for continual use. When people reuse their water bottles instead of purchasing a new one, they run the risk of chemical contamination. By reusing or heating up the water bottle, chemicals from the plastic may leak into the water and may poison the individual. Shipping many plastic water bottles across the United States uses many gallons of fuel. By shipping thousands of water bottles at a time, it will quickly deplete our limited fossil fuel resources. These water bottles create more unnecessary waste when instead they can be substituted by reusable water bottles. By avoiding this extra waste and decreasing the usage of fuel, we will be protecting our environment. This is the main concern for EcoCampus. We want to improve our campus while protecting and preserving the environment. INSERT HEADLINE HERE BOOSTING THE ECONOMY Another pillar of sustainability that the campus strives to preserve is the economy. UIC will be able to Continue proposal text here. Students gave money to the Green Fee Fund to support the sustainable projects on campus and in turn, freely without having to pay for a new one. This will save them and the faculty money because water is free regardless. ACCESSBILITY ON CAMPUS Equity on the UIC campus is important because we want students to have a fair share of all the resources the university has to offer. If the students had greater accessibility to the water bottle fill stations, they would take advantage of what they have to offer. Instead of buying more plastic water bottles and wasting away money, they would simply refill a water bottle at the water fill stations. If these stations are spread out around UIC, it is convenient for those who visit our campus. We will not be restricting people to disposable water bottles and they will not need to make long trip to different buildings when busy with class, work, or other things. These new locations will be closer to the center of the campus in order for there to be less of a hassle for students. The whole campus must be consistently sustainable and for a fact, all of the water fountains in Student Center East and Student Center West have been replaced.

4 April 18, 2014 The library and recreation facilities on both East and West campus have also been retrofitted. By installing more on campus, we will reinforce the idea that the whole campus is sustainable, not just a part of it. PLACES TO WATCH With this Green Fee money, the water fountain stations that will be retrofitted will benefit the student body and AWARENESS In order to ensure students can access the water bottle fill stations, a digital map of all of the locations of them will be uploaded onto one of UIC s websites. Then, anyone can look faculty because they will be closer to classes. These at this information and find a stations will be located near the center of campus, the quad. Fixing the fountains in the following locations will be most beneficial: Lecture Center C, Lecture Center F, Lecture Center D, Taft Hall, and Burnham Hall. This is beneficial to students since it will be near most of their classes. Provided in the final budget are two different fountain. For educational value, 11 by 17 posters will be hung up next to the water fill stations to illustrate how these stations help the environment. proposal plans. Plan A focuses on the quality of the fountains. By installing new fountains, there is less chance for them to break down for a while. Plan B focuses on quantity and this will be beneficial if we just want to replace many of them, but do not care about the quality of them.

15 04/16/14 TO: FROM: UIC Green Fee Advisory Board David Klawitter, President, UIC EcoCampus Letter of Support Water Bottle Fill Stations Hello Green Fee Advisory Board, I am writing to you to show support for the Green Fee proposal for water bottle fill stations at UIC. I believe this initiative will be highly beneficial for students at UIC, as well as UIC s future of sustainability in disposable water bottle use reduction. It has long been a campaign of EcoCampus to reduce the prevalence of disposable plastic water bottle on campus, whether working with UIC USG on a ban of the sale of plastic water bottle, or implementing campaigns to provide students with more options. This will address the ladder. By providing these fill stations, students will have more of an option to have refillable water bottles that they can have filled at most places on campus. This will make it easier for students to get water, other than relying on disposable water bottles. Thus, the idea is that refillable water bottles can be more easily used by students, and will begin to replace traditional, disposable bottles. From this change, EcoCampus plans to begin a more rigorous awareness campaign to make students more aware of the impact of their disposable bottle, and show them more of their options around campus. However, the necessary first step would be these filling stations. Beyond student awareness and access, the intended reduction in use of disposable bottles will reduce the amount of litter on campus and the number of wasted bottles thrown in the trash. Thus pollution and unwise resource use will be reduced. Ideally, this habit of saving resources will carry with students into their future lives and be spread to the lives of people they know as well. I strongly urge you to consider this proposal based on the impact it will have on the students, the campus, and future sustainable efforts. Sincerely, David M Klawitter EcoCampus President klawitt2@uic.edu
